World Accreditation Day(WAD) is annually observed across the globe on 9th June to promote the value of accreditation in the economy. The day also aims to create awareness about the importance of accreditation related activities.
9th June 2022 marks the 15th anniversary of World Accreditation Day
The theme of World Accreditation Day 2022(WAD 2022) is “Accreditation: Sustainability in Economic Growth and the Environment”.
- The 2022 theme aims to highlight how accreditation and conformity assessment can provide solutions for global issues.

Accreditation is the independent evaluation of conformity assessment bodies against recognised standards to carry out specific activities to ensure their impartiality and competence.
Background:
i.World Accreditation Day (WAD) is a global initiative jointly established by the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) and International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) in 2007.
ii.The first ever World Accreditation Day was observed on 9th June 2008.
Significance of WAD 2022:
The theme of World Accreditation Day 2022 focuses on “how accreditation supports several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN) such as
- SDG 6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
- SDG 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.
- SDG 8: Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.
- SDG 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.
- SDG 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
- SDG 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.
- SDG 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.
- SDG 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
- SDG 15: Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.
Observance:
The ILAC and IAF have released the brochure & poster and a joint statement by the officials highlighting the significance of the 2022 theme as a part of the celebration of World Accreditation Day 2022.
Key Points:
i.The global economy depends on the natural resources which are provided by the healthy ecosystem.
ii.The consumption of resources at an alarming rate puts the ecosystem under stress.
iii.Infrastructure tools including standardization, metrology, conformity assessment and market surveillance along with Accreditation will support the shift to a circular economy which encourages more sustainable forms of production.
