The United Nations Public Service Day is annually observed across the globe on 23rd June to recognise the contribution of the people associated with the public service and to encourage the youngsters to take up a career in the public sector.
The day highlights the importance of public service and its role in development.
- The Division of Public Institutions and Digital Government of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), collaborates with the Government of the United Arab Emirates(UAE), will host the virtual event of the United Nations Public Service Day 2021.
- The Virtual Celebration of United Nations Public Service Day 2021 is celebrated under the theme “Innovating the Future Public Service: New Government Models for a New Era to Reach the SDGs(Sustainable Development Goals)”.
Background:
The United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution A/RES/57/277 on 20th December 2002 and proclaimed the 23rd June as the United Nations Public Service Day.
UN Public Service Awards (UNPSA):
i.The UN Public Service Awards (UNPSA) programme was established by the UN in 2003 to recognise the UN Public Service Day and the value of public service.
ii.The award was reviewed in 2016 to align with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
iii.The UNPSA was first awarded on United Nations Public Service Day 2003.
Note:
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the UN Public Service Forum and the Award Ceremony has been rescheduled and it is set to be held in October 2021 in the United Arab Emirates
