According to the QS World University Rankings 2024 by Quacquarelli Symonds(QS) released on 27th June 2023, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B), Mumbai, Maharashtra, is the only Indian Institute featured among the top 150 Universities.
- IIT-B ranked 149th globally, has emerged as the best higher education Institue in India.
- The global list is topped by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, United States of America(USA) for the 12th time (2012 and from 2014 to 2024).
- MIT is followed by the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, the United Kingdom (UK) in 2nd place and the University of Oxford, Oxford, UK in 3rd place.
About QS World University Rankings 2024:
QS World University Rankings 2024, the 20th edition of the ranking, features 1,500 institutions across 104 locations and is the only ranking of its kind to emphasise employability and sustainability.
- For the 2024 ranking, QS has introduced 3 new metrics: Sustainability, Employment Outcomes and International Research Network in addition to the weighting of certain existing indicators, academic reputation, employer Reputation, and faculty-student ratio.

Key Points:
i.Apart from IIT-B, IIT Delhi (IITD) is the only Indian university among the top 200 in the 2024 ranking.
ii.The rank of IISc Bengaluru dropped from 155 in 2023 to 225 in 2024 while IIT-Madras has dropped from 250 in 2023 to 285 in 2024 and IIT-Delhi has dropped from 174 to 192 in 2023.
iii.The University of Delhi, ranked 407th, and Anna University, ranked 427th, have made their debut among the top 500 universities on the list.
iv.A total of 13 Indian universities have ranked lower than the 2023 edition, while the ranks of 13 institutes remained unchanged.
v.15 institutions have recorded a higher rank in 2024, with an academic reputation as the indicator where most institutions (28 out of 41, excluding the new entries) have improved.
The institutes whose ranking improved significantly included the University of Delhi, which has improved from 521 in 2023 to 407 in 2024.
