In India, the National Education Day is annually celebrated on 11th November to mark the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first education minister of independent India. The day is celebrated for his contributions towards education and to create awareness in education.
- India celebrated the 133rd birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna – Maulana Abul Kalam Azad on 11th November 2021.
Note – In 1923, Maulana Azad became the Youngest President of Indian National Congress.
BackgroundÂ
It was 1st observed in 2008, by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) (Now Ministry of Education), which declared it as National Education Day.
About Maulana Abul Kalam Azad
i.He was born on 11th November 1888 in Mecca, Saudi Arabia and later relocated to calcutta, India in the year 1890 and died in 1958.
Award – He was awarded Bharat Ratna, Posthumously in 1992.
ii.Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was the first Education Minister of independent India from 15th August 1947 to 2nd February 1958 who stressed on Women’s Education.
iii.During his tenure, the first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), School of Planning and Architecture and the University Grants Commission (UGC), Kharagpur Institute of higher education, University education commission, and the Secondary education commission were established.
