One of India’s most colourful and controversial politicians, Jayaram Jayalalitha, has been sentenced to jail for four years on corruption charges in a case that has lasted for 18 years. She has also been slapped with a fine of Rs 100 crore, highest imposed on any politician, by a special judge John Michael D’Cunha.
She has been charged under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1988 in the disproportionate assets case along with three others. Jayalalitha is the first Chief Minister to lose post in a graft case.
