On December 15, 2020, Israel Missile Defense Organization (IMDO) together with United States Missile Defense Agency (MDA) successfully test fired a series of Israel’s 3 multi-range missile defence systems namely – “Arrow”, “David’s Sling” & “Iron Dome” over the Mediterranean Sea. The tests are being conducted amidst heightening tensions between Israel & Iran.
The tests showcased the interoperability of the multilayered air-defense mechanisms (Arrow Missile, David’s Sling and Iron Dome).
Key Points:
i.The results of the tests will be used to evaluate and upgrade the system’s capabilities.
ii.The tests were led by Rafael Advanced Systems, Israel’s Air Force & Navy participated in the tests.
iii.The drills showcased the capability of the systems to intercept a range of aerial targets from drones to long range ballistic missiles.
‘Arrow Missile’:
It is an anti-ballistic missile jointly developed by Israel and the United States of America. Arrow intercepts country’s long-range missiles.
‘David’s Sling’:
i.David’s Sling is an anti-ballistic missile & Surface-to-Air missile used to shoot down medium-range missiles.
ii.It is jointly developed by Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defence Systems & USA’s Raytheon.
‘Iron Dome’:
i.It is an air defence system used to target incoming rocket fires.
ii.It is developed by Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defence Systems & Israel Aerospace Industries.
