According to the 8th edition of U.S. News & World Report’s Best Countries Rankings 2023, India improved its ranking by one spot to claim 30th rank in 2023 with overall score of 40.8. India was ranked 31 out of 85 in 2022.
- The list is topped by Switzerland, among 87 countries, for the second consecutive time and sixth time overall.
- Switzerland secured a place in the top 25 for all 10 subrankings.
- Switzerland is followed by Canada at 2nd rank, and Sweden at 3rd rank.
Basis of Analysis:
The rankings are developed in collaboration with global marketing communications company WPP and its proprietary BAV brand analytics tool, and by the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, United States (US). The ranking evaluated 87 countries, more than 17,000 respondents on 73 attributes.
- These attributes are grouped into 10 thematic sub-rankings viz. Adventure, Agility, Cultural Influence, Entrepreneurship, Heritage, Movers, Open for Business, Power, Quality of Life and Social Purpose.
The India Story:
i.As per the report, India has an area of 3,287,263 Sq.Km, and a population of 1,417,173,173 with Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of USD 3.39 trillion.
ii.India’s best performance came in the ‘Movers’ category by grabbing the 5th spot, in which countries are ranked based on their future growth potential, including how prepared it is to weather challenges posed by the global economy.
iii.In terms of cultural Influence and heritage, India is ranked 29th & 10th respectively.
iv.In the category of Power, India is ranked 12th.

Key Points:
i.The top 25 on the list is dominated by the Eruropean countries with 16 entries. Japan (6th), Singapore(16), China(20), and South Korea(21) are the only asian countries among top 25.
- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) (19th) is the only Middle Eastern country among top 25.
ii.Cyprus, Honduras, and Zimbabwe have made their debut in the Best Country Rankings, while El Salvador have rejoined the list after being absent in 2022.
iii.The bottom 10 countries on the list include Cameroon(78), Algeria(79), Myanmar(80), Honduras(81), Serbia(82), Uzbekistan(83), Kazakhstan(84), Lebanon(85), Belarus(86), and Iran(87).
v.Germany saw the largest fall among leading nations at 7th position in 2023 since 2022 , while Australia and New Zealand each rose three spots to 4th and 8th position.

i.According to the 17th edition of the Global Peace Index 2023 released by international think-tank, the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP), India has ranked at 126th position by climbing nine positions from 2022. The list is topped by Iceland.
