Droupadi Murmu, the President of India presided over the 8th anniversary of the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) and the first anniversary of SBM-Urban 2.0 (SBM-U 2.0), which were organized by the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) at Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi, Delhi.
- The President honoured the winners of the Cleanest States & Cities at the ‘Azadi@75 Swachh Survekshan 2022’ award ceremony. This is a part of the Swachh Amrit Mohotsav being conducted by MoHUA, from 17th September 2022 to 2nd October 2022 when India is celebrating eight years of accomplishments of SBM-Urban.
- The first-of-its-kind Indian Swachhata League was initiated where nearly half a million youth and citizens across more than 1,850 cities formed teams and competed to clean up beaches, hills, and public places.
- President of India also released an audio-visual song and documentary to strengthen the concept of SBM-U 2.0 among people. The theme of the audio-visual song was ‘Garv‘,which shows the pride journey of SBM-U 2.0.It featured various celebrity ambassadors of the Mission such as P V Sindhu and Mithali Raj.
- On 26th Sept, a very innovative challenge – the Swachh Toycathon – was launched by MOHUA to further the ‘waste to wealth’ approach, and encourage reuse of waste into toys.
Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM)
i.On October 2, 2014, Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi unveiled the first phase of SBM, a nation-wide campaign of the Government of India.
ii.The objectives of the Mission were:
- Reaching 100% Open Defecation Free (ODF) status
- Assuring 100% scientific Solid Waste Management (SWM)
- Behaviour changes through the “Jan Andolan” in all statutory towns, by 2nd October 2019
iii.The SBM-U was extended for a period of 5 (five) years, from October 01, 2021 to October 01, 2026, as Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0 (SBM-U 2.0).
Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban 2.0 (SBM – U 2.0)
PM Narendra Modi inaugurated SBM-U 2.0 on October 1, 2021. It is implemented by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
Aim: To contribute to the accomplishment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 by making all cities ‘Garbage Free’ under SBM-U 2.0.
President of India Announces Results of Swachh Survekshan 2022
The President officially unveiled the ‘Swachh Survekshan 2022’ dashboard and presented the top 12 awards.
- The Swachh Survekshan is a pioneering survey conducted by the MoHUA under the SBM-U to rank cities on various sanitation and cleanliness parameters.
- The award event was held to recognize the Towns/Cities, States, and Union Territories (UTs) for their efforts in support of Swachh Survekshan 2022 and for earning certifications for Garbage Free Star ratings for cities.
Highlights of Swachh Survekshan 2022
i.Indore (Madhya Pradesh [MP]), the city of lakes and palaces, was named the ‘Cleanest City’ in India for the sixth year in a row, in the “more than 1 lakh people” category.
- Surat (Gujarat) was named the second cleanest city for the second year in a row, and Navi Mumbai was named third.
ii.In the population category of “less than 1 lakh”, Panchgani and Karad from Maharashtra (MH) won the first and third places, respectively.
- The second spot went to Patan from Chhattisgarh.
iii.Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh (AP) was named the ‘Best City’ in the Safai Mitra Suraksha.
iv.Haridwar in Uttarakhand was named the ‘Best Ganga Town’ in more than 1 lakh population cities.
v.Shivamogga in Karnataka was designated as ‘Fast Moving City’.
vi.Indore strengthened its position by becoming India’s First 7-Star Garbage-Free City.
vii.Five-star Garbage Free certifications were awarded to Surat, Bhopal (MP), Mysuru (Karnataka), Navi Mumbai (MH), Visakhapatnam (AP), and Tirupati (AP).
viii.In the category of “more than 100 Urban Local Bodies,” Madhya Pradesh won the title of “Cleanest State”.
- Chhattisgarh, which held the “Cleanest State” title for the previous three years, bagged the second place.
- Maharashtra was ranked as the third-cleanest State.
ix.In the category of “less than 100 Urban Local Bodies”, Tripura won Cleanest State award.
- Jharkhand, which had won the previous two years in a row, came in second place and Uttarakhand came third place.
x.Madhya Pradesh was named the ‘Best Performing State’ in the Swachh Survekshan 2022.

In August 2022, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister (PM) of India Narendra Modi approved the proposal of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) for the continuation of ‘Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) – Housing for All’ up to December 31st 2024.
