Mauritius PM Pravind Jugnauth’s 3 day visit to India
On May 26, 2017, Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth arrived in India for a three-day official visit.
India, Mauritius sign 4 agreements including bilateral maritime security
i. Setting up of a civil services college in Mauritius
ii. Cooperation in ocean research
iii. USD 500 million Line of Credit (LOC) agreement between the SBM Mauritius Infrastructure Development Company and Export-Import Bank of India.
iv. Maritime Security Agreement

Kejriwal, Venkaiah Naidu flag off Delhi metro Heritage Line
On May 28, 2017, Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal and Union Urban Development Minister, M Venkaiah Naidu flagged off Heritage Line of Delhi Metro through video conferencing at Metro Bhawan in Delhi. Union Minister of Science and Technology, Harsh Vardhan was also present at the event.
i. This heritage line will connect Old Delhi areas with the commercial hub of Delhi at Janpath.
ii. Heritage Line comprises four stations viz. Kashmere Gate, Dilli Gate,Jama Masjid and Lal Qila on the stretch of 5.17 km.

WHO confirms first three Zika virus cases in India
According to World Health Organisation (WHO) report India has detected first three Zika-affected patients all from Ahmedabad in Gujarat.
Key Points:
i. The cases were brought to the knowledge of the WHO by the Health Ministry on May 15, 2017.
ii. The virus is transmitted to people through a bite of an infected mosquito called Aedes Aegypti, which also transmits dengue and chikungunya.Zika Virus
iii. Earlier, all the three cases had been confirmed by the Union Health Ministry’s labratories -first in January 2016, then in November 2016 and the last one in January 2017.

Haryana announces pension scheme for journalists
On May 27, 2017, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced following incentives for journalists at the “Swarna Jayanti Journalists’ Meet” in Panchkula:
i. Rs 10,000 monthly pension scheme, for those who are above 60 years and have completed 20 years in the profession.
ii. A life insurance covers of Rs 10 lakh and a cashless media claim policy of Rs 5,00,000.
iii. Media persons, who have completed five years in the profession, would be given recognition by the state government.
iv. A new policy would be framed for giving recognition to representatives of online news portals.

Dailong village in Manipur declared Biodiversity Heritage Site
The Manipur government has declared Dailong village of Tamenglong district as a Biodiversity Heritage Site of the state.
Key Points:
i. Dialong village is declared by joint secretary of forest and environment, Kengoo Zuringla.
ii. It has an area of 11.35 sq km.
Dailong village in Manipur declared Biodiversity Heritage Siteiii. It has been declared as Biodiversity Heritage Site under Section 37(1) of Biological Diversity Act, 2002.

Global forum on disaster risk reduction takes place in Mexico
5th edition of Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) took place from 22nd to 26th May 2017, in Cancun, Mexico.
i. Around 4,000 participants and delegations from over 180 countries attended this 5th edition of the Global Platform which was held outside Geneva, Switzerland for the first time and hosted and co-organised with the Mexican government.
ii. This is the first international summit on disaster since the Sendai Framework, which was adopted in 2015 in Japan. 
iii.  6th edition of Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction will take place in 2019 in Geneva, Switzerland.
About Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction:
The Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction is a biennial forum for information exchange, discussion of latest developments, knowledge and partnership-building across sectors, with the goal of improving implementation of disaster risk reduction through better communication and coordination amongst stakeholders.

Construction begins on world’s largest telescope in Chilean desert
Construction began on world’s largest telescope the European Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), in Chilean desert on 26 May 2017.
Key Points:
i. The telescope will be located in Chile’s Atacama Desert.Construction begins on world's largest telescope in Chilean desert
ii. The ELT will be around five times larger than the top observing instruments which are used today.
iii. It is conceived by the European Southern Observatory (ESO).
iv. It is located on a 3000 meter-High Mountain in the middle of the Atacama Desert.
v. To inaugurate the construction of the telescope the Director General of ESO, Tim de Zeeuw, and President of the Republic of Chile, Michelle Bachelet Jeria attended the ceremony.
About Extra Large Telescope
i. It is designed to be an adaptive telescope and has the ability to correct atmospheric turbulence.
ii. It is designed by the Oxford University scientists and they are playing a key role in the project.
iii. They will be responsible for the design and construction of its spectrograph HARMONI.
iv. HARMONI is an instrument designed to simultaneously take 4000 images, each in a slightly different colour.

BANKING & FINANCE

Goldman, Citigroup among 5 bankers selected for IOC stake sale
Goldman Sachs and Citigroup are among the 5 merchant bankers selected by Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) to manage Government’s 3% stake sale in Indian Oil Corporation (IOC).
About IOC Stake Sale:
i. 3% stake sale in Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) at current market price will fetch about Rs. 6000.
ii. Timing of theIOC share sale will be decided after evaluating market conditions.
iii. In August 2015, government had last sold 10% stake in IOC at Rs.387 per share and raised 9,369 crore.
iv. Deutsche Equities, SBI Capital Markets and ICICI Securities are other three entities which have been selected to manage this stake sale. As many as 10 merchant bankers including Axis Capital, Kotak Investment, Nomura Financial, Edelweiss Financial and IDFC Bank were vying for this job.

BUSINESS

IOC overtakes ONGC to become India’s most profitable PSU
Indian Oil Corp (IOC) has overtaken Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) to become India’s most profitable public sector undertaking (PSU).
i. For financial year ended March 31, 2017, IOC posted a net profit of Rs 19,106.40 crore, which marks a 70% jump from previous year.
ii. This net profit figure is much higher than ONGC’s Rs 17,900 crore for financial year ended March 31, 2017.

Pune city police receive FICCI Smart Policing Award 2017
The Pune city police have won the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FICCI) Smart Police Award for the year 2017.
Key Points:
i. The Pune city Police has been awarded for their initiatives on women and cyber Pune city police receive FICCI Smart Policing Award 2017security.
ii. The Pune city police have launched various initiatives like Buddy Cop”,“Damini squad”, “Lost & Found” portal, Beat Marshal Monitoring Sapience App.

Mission XI Million picks Chandigarh girl Ananya Kamboj
Ananya Kamboj, 8th standard student from Chandigarh has been selected as a young journalist at the global Football for Friendship (F4F) Social Programme in Russia.
Key Points:
i. She is from Vivek High School, Mohali and has been selected to represent India.

SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

China launches Satellite Navigation Positioning System
China has launched national satellite navigation and positioning system on 28th of May.
Key Notes:
i. It will provide positioning service to transportation, emergency medical rescue and city planning and management.
ii. It will be compatible with other satellite navigation systems, such as the Bei Dou Navigation Satellite System and Global Position System (GPS).
iii. It is one of the largest in the country and will cover the widest coverage.
iv. The system will feature the fastest speed,higher accuracy and wider coverage.
v. The system will also able to provide positioning service to transportation, emergency medical rescue and city planning and management.
vi. The system consists of 2,700 base stations, a national database centre and 30 provincial level database centres.
vii. China will launch 18 Beidou navigation satellites by 2018 and 6 to 8 Beidou satellites will be sent into orbit in the second half this year.
viii. By 2020, the Beidou satellites will form a complete global satellite navigation system

Jaitely launches Aeronautical Test Range in Karnataka
Defence Minister Arun Jaitely has launched an Aeronautical Test Range (ATR) set up in Chitradurga in Karnataka.
Key Points:
i. The total cost is Rs 1,300 crore.
ii. It has been planned by the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) and in collaboration with other Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) labs.
iii. It’s main objective of building necessary infrastructure for testing and evaluating unmanned and manned aircraft being undertaken by aeronautic cluster labs in the DRDO.Jaitely launches Aeronautical Test Range in Karna
iv. The current length of the runway at the ATR is 2.2 km.
v. It can be used for testing of bigger aircraft like AEW&CS (Airborne Early Warning & Control Systems) aircraft.
vi. It is meant for surveillance and intelligence gathering, which has been inducted into Indian Air Force.

Researchers discover glass frog so translucent you can see its heart
The newly discovered glass frog was found in the Amazonian lowlands of Ecuador.
Key Points:
i. Scientists have discovered a remarkable new species of glass frog whose beating heart can be seen right through its chest.
ii. It has dark green spots on its back, and red heart that can be seen through chest.

South Korea defeat China to win 2017 Sudirman Cup
South Korea defeated China won badminton’s Sudirman Cup for the first time in 14 years on 28th of May, 2017

i. South Korea has won by 3-2 points over 10-time champions China.
ii. It was held in Gold Coast Australia.

Former Mumbai Cricketer Kiran Ashar No More
Former cricketer Kiran Ashar passed away on May 27, 2017 in Mumbai. He was 69.
Overview of Kiran Ashar’s Cricket Career:
i. Ashar, born on June 19, 1947 in Bombay, played seven first class matches and scored 306 runs, with his highest being 105, from 1968/69 to 1977/78.
ii. He played as a wicketkeeper-batsman representing Bombay as well as the West Zone
iii. Kiran Ashar made his debut for Bombay in an Irani Cup match against the Rest of India at Cricket Club of India in 1968/69 season.
iv. He opened the batting with cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar and played the Ranji Trophy final against Delhi in 1976/77 season.

Italian fashion designer Laura Biagiotti dies at 73
Lura Biagiotti has died in Rome, after suffering a cardiac arrest. She was 73.

Gregg Allman, rock trailblazer, dies at 69
Gregg Allman, the soulful singer-songwriter and rock n’ blues pioneer has died at the age of 69.
Key points:
i. Gregg had founded The Allman Brothers Band with his late brother, Duane, and composed such classics as “Midnight Rider,” “Melissa” and the epic concert jam “Whipping Post”.
ii. He was diagnosed with hepatitis C in 1999 and underwent a liver transplant in 2010.
