INDIAN AFFAIRS

World’s Highest Rail Track Survey to Commence at Leh
Indian Railways will start the final location survey of the 498 km long Bilaspur-Manali-Leh line at Leh in Jammu and Kashmir this week.
Details about Bilaspur-Manali-Leh line at Leh in Jammu and Kashmir:
i. The proposed new rail line will connect all important locations between Bilaspur and Leh namely Sunder Nagar Mandi, Manali, Tandi, Keylong, Koksar, Darcha, Upshi and Karu.
ii. Coming up at a height of 3,300 metres, the strategically important rail project is touted to become the highest rail track in the world, overtaking China’s Qinghai–Tibet Railway.
iii. Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu will inaugurate the work for the final location survey on June 27, 2017 at an estimated cost of Rs 157.77 crore.
iv. survey is funded by the defence ministry and has been entrusted to RITES, a Railways PSU.

Aadhaar not valid for travel to Nepal, Bhutan: Home ministry
According to the Union home ministry Aadhaar is not a valid identification document for Indians travelling to Nepal and Bhutan.
Key Points:
i. Indians can travel to Nepal and Bhutan–both countries for which they don’t need visas–if they possess a valid national passport or election ID card issued by the Election Commission.A Historic moment! ! UIDAI produced 100 crore Aadhaars
ii. The advisory assumes significance as Aadhaar is mandatory for a host of things, including government subsidies on LPG and other social welfare schemes so Aadhaar (UID) is not acceptable as travel document for travel to Nepal/Bhutan.
iii. For ease travelling the persons over 65 and below 15 years can show documents with photographs to confirm their age and identity.
iv. These include PAN card, driving licence, Central Government Health Service (CGHS) card and ration card but not Aadhaar.
v. The border with Nepal is an open one with people who enter the country needing to show any valid identity card.
vi. Indians entering Bhutan by road are required to obtain an ‘Entry Permit’ on the basis of a valid travel document.
vii. In another development, Indians flying abroad will not be required to fill departure cards from next month.
viii. According to the Home Ministry it has been decided to discontinue the practice of filling up of the departure card by Indians at all international airports with effect from July 1, 2017.

For the first time in the history of Manipur, 24/7 helpline 181 launched for women
The Manipur CM Biren Singh has launched a toll free 24/7 helpline number 181 for women in the state .
Key Points:
i. For the first time in the history of Manipur, a helpline especially for women was launched at Kuranga Nayani Hall, D.C. office complex of Lamphel.
ii.It is launched by the Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) and department of social welfare.
iii. The helpline “181” was launched by State Minister for Social Welfare and Corporation NemchaKipgen.
iv. The helpline will help fight and reduce crime against women in the state.
v. The helpline will also provide information about the appropriate support services, government schemes and programmes available to the women affected by violence.
vi. This scheme is available and designed for all 16 districts of the state and for this purpose District level nodal officers have been appointed.

135th Jagannath Puri chariot festival begins in Odisha
The 135thJagannathYatra starts from June 25 and ends on July 3. The end of Yatra is termed as the return cart festival or BahudaJatra.
Key Points:
i. The Jagannath Yatra festival will be held in Odisha. The RathYatra festival is related to Lord Jagannath.
ii. According to Hindu calendar, this yatra is celebrated every year on AshadhShuklaDwitiya.
iii. Ten thousand people are reportedly expected to attend the religious festival this year.
135th Jagannath Puri chariot festival begins in Odishaiv. The 5000 year old chariot festival marks the return of Lord Krishna to Vrindavan with his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra.
v. This yatra includes three majestic chariots Nandighosa (Lord Jagannath), Taladwaja (Balabhadra) and Darpadalan (Subhadra).
vi. On the occasion of Rath Yatra , devotees will pull these three chariots on the grand road to the Gundicha Temple, which is situated about three kilometres from the main temple.
vii. Sudarsan Pattnaik has carved beautiful art on RathYatra of Lord Jagannath at the Puri beach in Odisha with message “Let us all immerse in the spirit of unity & brotherhood”.

29.5 million people globally suffer from drug use disorders, opioids the most harmful says World Drug Report 2017
As per World Drug Report 2017, released by United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), around 29.5 million people (0.6% of the global adult population) were engaged in problematic use of drugs and suffered from drug use disorders, including dependence.
i. The report highlighted that Opioids (drugs derived from opium, including morphine) were the most harmful drug type and accounted for 70% of the negative health impact associated with drug use disorders worldwide.
ii. The report finds that hepatitis C is causing the greatest harm among the estimated 12 million people who inject drugs worldwide. Out of these 12 million, 1.6 million are living with HIV, 6.1 million are living with hepatitis C, while around 1.3 million are suffering from both hepatitis C and HIV.

World Taekwondo Federation changes its name as World Taekwondo
The World Taekwondo Federation has changed its name to World Taekwondo on 25th June 2017.

Paris agreement’s 1.5C target ‘only way’ to save coral reefs, Unesco says
According to UNESCO greater emissions reductions and delivering on the Paris climate agreement are now the only opportunity to save coral reefs.
Key Points:
i.T he first global scientific assessment of the impacts of climate change on the 29 world heritage-listed coral reefs, published on 24th of June 2017.
ii. A draft decision prepared by UNESCO to be addressed by the world heritage committee at its meeting in Krakow in Poland from 2 to 12 July, 2017
iii. The prospects of coral reefs long-term survival was at a crossroads, with the worst-case scenario able to be avoided only if we quickly adopt the 1.5C target.
iv. It is found that the frequency, intensity and duration of heat-stress events had worsened with increasing global warming, with massive consequences for the 29 world heritage sites.
v. According to the US national ocean and atmospheric administration (NOAA) coral-reef watch showed that 13 of the 29 listed reefs had been exposed to levels of heat stress that cause coral bleaching, on average more than twice per decade from 1985 to 2013.
viTwenty-one listed sites had suffered severe and/or repeated heat stress in the last three years.
vii. During the third global bleaching event from mid-2014 to mid-2017,Bleaching had occurred more frequently in recent years than in decades prior, with coral mortality.
viii. Bleaching creates more severe extreme weather events, increasing ocean acidification, and pollution.
ix. The Great Barrier Reef it is one of the world’s most iconic coral reef systems” and among four of the total 29 listed located in Australia, had been “seriously affected” by back-to-back severe bleaching events this year.

BANKING & FINANCE

State’s fiscal deficit soars to Rs 4.93 trillion in FY16
According to the second edition of Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) statistical publication titled ‘Handbook of Statistics on States 2016-17’, total gross fiscal deficits of Indian states shot up to Rs 4,93,360 crore in fiscal 2016 from Rs 18,790 crore in FY1991.
i. Rajasthan with Rs 67,350 crore deficit in FY16 and Uttar Pradesh with Rs 64,320 crore deficit in FY16 accounted for the largest chunks in the total gross fiscal deficits of Indian States.
ii. Maharashtra, one of the most urbanised and industrialised states had a deficit of Rs 1,020 crore in FY91 but the same jumped to Rs 37,950 crore in FY16 which is projected to improve to Rs 35,030 crore in FY17.

The Sports Journalists Federation of India (SJFI), at its annual general meeting on June 25, 2017, decided to confer the best Sportsperson of the Year award on Badminton P V Sindhu elected to Badminton World Federation Athletes’ Commissionplayer P V Sindhu and Best Team of the Year award to Indian Junior Hockey Squad.
More Details about Sports Journalists Federation of India Awards:
i. The period for which the awards were considered was between July 2016 and June 2017.
ii. P V Sindhu clinched the silver medal at Olympic Games at Rio in August 2016.
iii. The Indian junior hockey team won the Junior World Cup title by defeating Belgium 2-1 in the final held at Lucknow in December 2016.
iv. Both the awards would be presented at the 40th convention of the SJFI to be held in Indore in September 2017.

IDFC Ltd has announced the elevation of its CFO Sunil Kakar as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. He is appointed for 3 years.

ISRO-made system to alert users at unmanned level crossings
ISRO has made Satellite-based chip systems to alert road users at unmanned level crossings about approaching trains and also help in tracking train movement on a real-time basis.
Key Points:
i. On a pilot basis, the Mumbai and Guwahati Rajdhani trains will be equipped with this system.
ii. More trains will be equipped with such technology in a phase-wise manner.
iii. The satellite-based system will also help railways in mapping the area and the technology will come in handy at the time of accidents when it can be used to ascertain the exact location of trains and topography.ISRO-made system to alert users at unmanned level crossings
iv. Road users will be warned by hooters once a train approaches an unmanned level crossing as railways are installing ISRO-developed integrated circuit (IC) chips on locomotives of trains.
v. There will be hooters at 20 unmanned level crossings on Rajdhani routes for Guwahati and Mumbai.
vi. The hooter will be activated through the IC chip, warning road users as well as the train driver near the crossing.
vii. The hooter will be louder as the level crossing nears, and finally it will be silent after the train passes by.
viii.There are about 10,000 unmanned railway crossings in the country which account for around 40% of accidents involving the railways.
ix. Railways have eliminated 1,148 unmanned crossings in 2014-15 and 1,253 in 2015-16.Railway is planning to eliminate all such crossings in the next 2 to 3 years.

Kidambim Srikanth beats Chen Long to win Australia Open Super Series
India shuttler Kidambi Srikanth has defeated Olympic champion Chen Long to win the Australia Open Super Series men’s singles title on 25th of June 2017.
Key Points:
iSrikanth has won in straight games 22-20, 21-16 to win his career’s 4th Super Series title.
ii. This is world no 11 Srikanth’s second straight title victory in a week after he won the Indonesian Open Super Series Premier last Sunday.
iii. Srikanth has become only the fifth player in the world and the first Indian male shuttler to contest three consecutive Super Series finals. Singapore Open, Indonesia Open and Kidambim Srikanth beats Chen Long to win Australia Open Super SeriesAustralian Open.
iv. The Badminton Association of India (BAI) announced a cash award of Rs 5 lakh for Srikanth after he lifted the title.

Junior World C’ship: Anish Bhanwala wins standard pistol gold with world record
Indian shooter Anish Bhanwala has won a gold medal at the ISSF Junior World Championship in the 25m Standard Pistol category in Germany on June 25, 2017
Key Points:
iAnish had previously won a bronze medal at the Junior Men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol event at the 27th Meeting of the Shooting Hopes which concluded in May.
ii. The previous record was held by Denis Koulakov, who shot a score of 574 in a competition held in Finland in 2002.
iii. Anish, a 14 year old broke the record with a score of 576 in three rounds.

Venkaiah Naidu has launched the book which titled The Emergency — Indian Democracy’s Darkest Hour on 24th of June 2017.

Govt observes Anti-Emergency Day
The government has decided to observe anti-Emergency day on 25-26 June, 2017
Key Points:
i. The government also asked all its ministers to hold programmes across the country to remind people how Emergency was clamped by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975.
ii. The Emergency termed as a “black day” in the constitutional democracy of independent India.   
iii. As per the Venkaiah Naidu mentioned to demonstrate how we value the real democracy and how sturdily we stand for people’s rights.
iv. Naidu also asked the ministers to tour one or two places to explain and interact with people, traders, merchant organisations, chambers of commerce and industry to explain the highlights and benefits of the GST. It would be implemented from 1st July.
v. According to Naidu June 25-26 observe the day as such to reinforce our firm commitment against subversion of democratic values

The Day of Seafarer (DotS) has observed on 25th of June 2017. DotSwas established in a resolution adopted by the 2010 Diplomatic Conference in Manila to adopt the revised STCW Convention.

i. Its main purpose is to recognize the unique contribution made by seafarers from all over the world to international seaborne trade, the world economy and civil society as a whole.
ii. The theme of Seafarer Day 2017 is “Seafarers Matter“.
iii. The resolution will encourage Governments, shipping organizations, companies, Day of the Seafarershipowners and all other parties and to promote the Day of the Seafarer and take action to celebrate it meaningfully.
