PM Modi’s 2 day Visit to Uttar Pradesh: PM launches 81 projects worth Rs 60,000 crore
Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his 2 day tour of Uttar Pradesh from July 28-29th 2018. he was welcomed by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

Rs.215 crore project of Meghalaya Milk Mission launched in Shillong by Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Radha Mohan Singh
On July 30, 2018, Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Radha Mohan Singh launched the Rs. 215 crore Meghalaya Milk Mission in Shillong through National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC).

In assisting to achieve Centre’s goal of doubling farmer’s income by 2022 through promotion of milk business
Key Points:
The amount will be utilised for  training under dairy farm, chilling centre and purchase of milch animal.
About the Project:
i. The project consists of 2000 dairy farm units.
ii. Each unit houses 5 cows, shed constructions, storage room construction, animal insurance, 79 bulk milk coolers of 500 litre capacity, 13 milk tankers of 3000 litre capacity etc.
iii. Rs 1 crore would be additionally provided for the training of farmers.
Other Announcements:
i. Mission Sahakar-22 under NCDC has been started to give employment opportunities through cooperatives.
ii. Creation of a dedicated Meghalaya Dairy Development Agency is underway.
iii. Integrated Cooperative Development Project (ICDP) for computerization of primary co-operatives will be started.
iv. The Central government will provide assistance to State cooperatives  in areas of handicraft, handloom, organic farming, forest produce, horticulture etc.

A High Level Empowered Committee headed by Cabinet Secretary set up to address stressed thermal power assets
On July 30, 2018, Government set up a High Level Empowered Committee headed by Cabinet Secretary Pradeep Kumar Sinha to address the issues of Stressed Thermal Power Projects.

To resolve the stress and revive such assets
Key Points:
i. This committee would also involve representatives from the Ministry of Railways, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Power, Ministry of Coal and banks involved in this sector.
ii. It would work on : maximizing the efficiency of investment, changes in the fuel allocation policy, regulatory framework, facilitation of sale of power, timely payments, /Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), Asset Restructuring Company (ARC) Regulations.
iii. This would revive the stressed assets so as to avoid such investments becoming NPA.

Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) in Finance Ministry domain: President’s order
On July 30, 2018, Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) has been taken away from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and brought under the domain of the Finance Ministry.
i. It will now be under the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA), Finance Ministry,
ii. This move would use proceeds of the road cess under CRIF to finance other infrastructure projects like waterways, railway infrastructure etc.
Background of this topic:
i. The government recently constituted a 4 member committee and a 15 member sub-committee.
ii. The 4 member committee was headed by Finance Minister.
iii. The 15 member Committee was headed by the Economic Affairs secretary.
iv.These committees decide on fund allocation for infrastructure projects from the CRIF and the list of infrastructure projects to be financed from the CIRF.
v. Budget 2018 amended the Central Road Fund Act, 2000, and renamed the Central Road Fund the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund.

Unified Commanders’ Conference (UCC) 2018 in New Delhi
On 30th and 31st July 2018, Unified Commanders’ Conference (UCC) 2018 is held in New Delhi.
Unified Commanders’ Conference (UCC) 2018:
i. Unified Commanders’ Conference (UCC) 2018 is conducted under the guidance of Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS). It aims to review external security challenges and the preparedness of India.
ii. This conference creates a platform for discussions at the top Level on all joint issues among the three Services and Ministry of Defence.
iii. It also enables stock taking of the previous year and planning for the next year. Under the chairmanship of the Chief of Integrated Staff (CISC), various Tri Services issues will be discussed.
iv. Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Minister of State for Defence Subhash Ramrao Bhamre, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, the Chiefs of Army, Navy and Air Force etc, are taking part in the conference.

2nd Conference of Young Superintendent of Police held in New Delhi
On 26th July 2018, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, inaugurated the 2nd Conference of Young Superintendent of Police, organized by Bureau of Police Research & Development (BPR&D), in New Delhi.
2nd Conference of Young Superintendent of Police:
i. The conference is held for 2 days. The conference was attended by more than 100 Superintendents of Police and senior officers from the States and CAPFs (Central Armed Police Forces).
ii. Theme of the Conference was: “Predictive Policing and Contemporary Challenges for Indian Police Forces”.
iii. Aim of the conference was: to create awareness among young Superintendents of Police and Commandants about latest technologies in Artificial Intelligence, Predictive Policing/ Crime Analytics/ Big data Analytics, Geospatial Technology, Cyber Crime, Surveillance Tracking & UAVs, CCTV Equipment, to efficiently deliver the Police Services to citizens.
iv. National Level Police Expo was also organized along with the conference, in association with several knowledge partners and stakeholders.
v. BPR&D has the mandate to develop an interface between technology developers (Industry, Academia and Govt. Technical Institutions) and representatives of law enforcement agencies by means of expositions & demonstrations of latest technologies/gadgets related to police modernisation.
vi. Closing address of the conference was delivered by Lt. Governor of Puducherry, Dr. Kiran Bedi.

3rd BRICS Film Festival held in Durban, South Africa from July 22-27, 2018.
On 22-27th July, 2018, The 3rd BRICS Film Festival was held in Durban, South Africa, along with the International Durban Film Festival (DIFF).

Objective:
To celebrate and inspire collaborations of world-class film productions from the BRICS nations
Key Points:
i. The Indian Side was headed by : Shri Manoj Kumar Pingua, Joint Secretary (EW), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Shri Raja Chhinal, Deputy General Manager (East), NFDC.
ii. The films in competition competed for the Golden Rhino award inspired from golden rhino of Mapungubwe.

Renu Satti quits as Paytm Payments Bank CEO, to head ‘New Retail’ initiative at company
Paytm Payments Bank CEO Renu Satti has resigned from her position. Now, she will lead as COO (Chief Operating Officer)of the ‘New Retail’ initiative.
Resignation of Renu Satti:
i. A new CEO is yet to be appointed for the Paytm Payments Bank. Renu Satti was made the CEO of Paytm Payments Bank in 2017.
ii. Renu Satti will take charge of the ‘New Retail’ initiative as COO. Under the ‘New Retail’ model, soon customers will be able to discover nearby pharmacies, groceries etc. to order and receive fast deliveries.

Anil Kumar Chawla appointed as FOC-in-Chief of Southern Naval Command
Vice Admiral Anil Kumar Chawla has been appointed as the next Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Naval Command.
Anil Kumar Chawla – FOC-in-Chief of Southern Naval Command:
i. At present, Anil Kumar Chawla is the Chief of Personnel at the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Navy), at Delhi.
ii. He will succeed Vice Admiral AR Karve, who will superannuate on 31st July 2018.
iii. Anil Kumar Chawla is a Navigation & Direction specialist. He has commanded 5 ships in his career. He was also the Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet.

HSBC India appoints Surendra Rosha as CEO
On 30th July 2018, Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) announced that, Surendra Rosha has been appointed as Chief Executive Officer for HSBC India.
Surendra Rosha – CEO of HSBC India:
i. Surendra Rosha is at present HSBC’s Head of Financial Institutions Group (FIG) for Asia-Pacific.
ii. He will replace Jayant Rikhye as CEO of HSBC India. Jayant Rikhye is taking leave due to medical reasons.
iii. Surendra Rosha joined HSBC’s Indian operations in 1991. He has worked in forex trading, corporate treasury sales, treasury and capital markets in several countries.

International Army Games 2018 in Moscow
On 28th July 2018, the International Army Games 2018 was inaugurated by Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, at Patriot Park in Moscow, Russia.
International Army Games 2018:
i. The International Army Games 2018 is held from 28th July to 11th August 2018. The games are conducted at 24 training grounds in 7 countries namely Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Iran, Kazakhstan, China and Russia.
ii. 189 teams from 32 countries are participating in this games. 28 contests will be held during the tournament.
iii. This is the first time Armenia and Iran are co-hosting events of the Army Games.
iv. Indian teams are participating in 2 major competitions: Tank Biathlon event at Alabino ranges, Moscow region and Elbrus Ring competition in Caucasus mountains.
v. Indian Ambassador to Russia, Pankaj Saran took part in the opening ceremony.

Prabhat Koli became the 1st Asian Teen to Swim UK-France Channel
On 26th July 2018, Prabhat Koli became the first Asian to swim the choppy water from Jersey (an Island in the UK) to Francein cold weather.

i. Prabhat Koli is a 19 year old college student. He covered 25km in 6 hours and 54 minutes.
ii. He started from La Coupe Point of Jersey and reached St Germain Plage on the Normandy coast of France. The temperature of water was nearly 16-170c during the swim.
iii. The swim was organized by Jersey Long Distance Swimming Club (JLDSC) under the observation of Sally Minty Gravett of the UK.
iv. Prabhat Koli had crossed the English Channel when he was 16 years old.

‘Ek doctor ki maut’ writer Ramapada Chowdhury passes away at 95
On 29th July 2018, Bengali writer Ramapada Chowdhury, died due to cardiac arrest.

‘Ek doctor ki maut’ writer Ramapada Chowdhury passes away at 95Death of Ramapada Chowdhury:
i. Ramapada Chowdhury was 95 years old. He was born on December 28, 1922 at Kharagpur.
ii. His story ‘Abhimanyu’ was made into an award winning Hindi movie named ‘Ek doctor ki maut’ in 1990.
iii.It was based on the life of Dr Subhas Mukhopadhyay who developed India’s first and the world’s second test-tube baby in 1978.
iv. His story ‘Beej’ was made into a Hindi film named ‘Ek din achanak’ (1989).
v. Some of his important works are: ‘Pratham Prahar’ (1954), ‘Banpalashir padabali’ (1960), ‘Ekhoni’ (1969), ‘Kharij’, ‘Bari badle jay’ (1988), ‘Abhimanyu’ (1982).
vi. He was awarded the Sahitya Academy award in 1988. He had also received the Rabindra Puraskar, Ananda Puraskarand Rabindranath Tagore Memorial International Prize.

On 30th July 2018, World Day against Trafficking in Persons was observed all over the world.
World Day against Trafficking in Persons:
i. When: In 2013, the United Nations General Assembly declared July 30 as the World Day against Trafficking in Persons.
ii. Why: this day is observed to create awareness about the condition of victims of human trafficking and for promotion and protection of their rights.
iii. Theme: ‘Responding to the trafficking of children and young people’ has been declared as theme for World Day against Trafficking in Persons 2018 by United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
iv. This theme focuses on issues faced by trafficked children and action required to protect and provide justice for child victims.
