Japan to Export to India Stealthy UNICORN NORA-50 Integration MastJapan to Export to India Stealthy UNICORN NORA-50 Integration MastIndia and Japan have recently solidified their strategic partnership with a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) for the development of the UNICORN (UNIted COnbined Radio aNtenna) NORA-50 integration mast. The MoC brings strategic partnership between two countries in the field of defence Technology.

  • This unique horn-shaped structure consolidates multiple antennas for tactical data link, TACAN (Tactical Air Navigation), and communications, aiming to reduce radar cross-section (RCS) and enhance operational capabilities.
  • TACAN is a vital navigation tool in military aviation by providing accurate aircraft placement, particularly in difficult operational settings, and contributing to the overall safety and effectiveness of military missions. The aim of the project is to improve military systems’ navigational skills by incorporating TACAN capabilities into the NORA-50.

DoT conducts 5G & Beyond Hackathon 2023 to showcase 5G products & Solutions
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) under the Ministry of Communication, conducts ‘5G & Beyond Hackathon 2023‘, aimed at shortlisting India-focused cutting-edge ideas that can be converted into workable 5G and beyond products and solutions.The participants include individuals, students, startups, and academic institutions send their proposals from June 28, 2023.
i.The top 100 startups will be honored with a prize of 100 lakh (One crore) for their outstanding contributions to the development of 5G products and solutions During the upcoming India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2023 in October 2023, held in New Delhi, Delhi.
ii.The winners will get the support from government, industry, academia, telecommunication industries and original equipment manufacturers to develop their models into products.
iii.The contestants can develop 5G and beyond solutions from across multiple categories including healthcare, education and governance, AgriTech and livestock, environment, public safety and disaster management enterprise, smart cities and infrastructure, cyber security, banking, finance and insurance, logistics and transportation, multimedia and broadcast satellite, among others.

B.Neeraja Prabhakar,Vice-Chancellor of the Sri Konda Laxman Telangana State Horticultural University appointed as the chairperson of the Research Advisory Committee (RAC) of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)-Indian Institute of Oil Palm Research (IIOPR) at Pedavegi in Andhra Pradesh.

  • She assumed office on June 13, 2023 and will head a 10-member committee for a period of three years.
  • The ICAR-IIOPR is the country’s only top institute undertaking oil palm research and creating oil palm technology that may be used in all oil palm-growing states.
  • She is also a member of the Telangana Oil Palm Advisory Committee, which advises the state government on the expansion of oil palm production, challenges associated with oil palm farming, and issues confronting the oil palm processing Industry.

FAO, UNEP, WHO & WOAH launched One Health Priority Research Agenda for AMROne Health FAO, UNEP, WHO and WOAH launch research agenda for antimicrobial resistanceOn 28th June 2023, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) , “the Quadripartite organisations”, launched “A One Health Priority Research Agenda for Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)” through a webinar. The Research agenda aims to promote increased research and investment in AMR.
One Health Priority Research Agenda on AMR: 
i.The agenda defines ‘One Health’ as an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimise the health of people, animals and ecosystems.
ii.It aims to guide a variety of stakeholders in generating new evidence to address antimicrobial resistance, with a focus on low- and middle-income countries.
iii.The concept acknowledges the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the larger environment, including ecosystems, are inextricably linked and interdependent.
5 Key Pillars: 
The global experts have identified five key pillars as well as three cross-cutting themes, namely gender, vulnerable populations, and sustainability using a mixed Method approach.
The 5 key pillars are,
i.Transmission: This pillar focuses on the environment, plant, animal, and human sectors where AMR transmission, circulation and spread occur.
ii.Integrated surveillance: This pillar aims to identify cross-cutting priority research questions in order to improve common technical understanding and information exchange among One Health stakeholders.
iii.Interventions: This pillar focuses on programmes, practises, tools, and activities aimed at preventing, containing, or reducing the incidence, prevalence, and spread of AMR.
iv.Behavioural insights and change:It focuses on research addressing human behaviour that affects AMR, including ways to combat it.
v.Economics and policy: This pillar addressed investment and action in AMR prevention and control.
Additional info: 
On June 22, 2023 WHO launched a global research agenda for AMR in human health which prioritises 40 research topics for and guide stakeholders to generate evidence to address antimicrobial resistance and to collaborate across sectors by 2030 on low- and middle-income countries(LMICs).

BANKING & FINANCE

Bank of India, 1st Bank, to roll out Mahila Samman Savings Certificate Scheme Bank of India rolls out Mahila Samman Savings Certificate schemeOn July 4, 2023, the Bank of India (BoI) became the first bank to officially roll out Mahila Samman Savings Certificate (MSSC), 2023, and operationalizing this scheme at all its branches. The roll-out ceremony was inaugurated by the Managing Director (MD) & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Rajneesh Karnatak through a Video Conference (VC).

  • This means, BoI is authorized to open accounts under MSSC. So far, only post offices were authorized to open accounts under MSSC.

Note: On June 27, 2023, the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA), Ministry of Finance, permitted all Public Sector Banks (PSBs) and eligible Private Sector Banks to implement and operationalize the MSSC, 2023.
About Mahila Samman Savings Scheme (MSSC):
Announced by the Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Ministry of Finance, during the Budget speech FY 2023-2024, it commemorates the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. MSSC is aimed at empowering girls and women through financial savings. It is a one-time small saving scheme backed by the Central Government which is available for two years, from April 2023-March 2025.
Eligibility and Account Opening:
i.Individual girls or women can open an account, or a guardian can open on behalf of a minor girl.
ii.Minimum investment of Rs 1000 and multiples of Rs 100, up to a maximum limit of Rs 200,000.
iii.Multiple accounts allowed with a three-month gap, subject to the overall investment cap.
Interest Rate and Taxation:
i.The Deposit under the scheme is eligible for 7.5%  interest per annum which will be compounded quarterly and credited in account and paid at the time of closure of account.
ii.All earnings under the MSSC are taxable as per existing income tax provisions. But TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) will not be deducted under the scheme.
Account Duration and Closure:
i.Account matures after two years from the date of opening.
ii.MSSC can be closed after 6 months of opening the account without giving any reason. In such a case, an interest of 5.5% will be given i.e. 2% penalty after six months.
iii.Premature closure allowed in case of account holder’s death or extreme compassionate grounds.
Partial Withdrawals:
i.Account holders can make partial withdrawals up to 40% of the eligible balance.
ii.Partial withdrawals allowed after one year from the date of opening the account.

India May 2023 services exports rise 7.7% to USD 27.06 billion: RBI
According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) provisional data on July 4, 2023, India’s services exports in May 2023 increased by 7.7% compared to May 2022, reaching USD ($)27.06 billion while imports rose 2% to USD 15.5 billion.

  • The government’s initial estimates, released in mid-June, had indicated that services exports amounted to USD 25.3 billion, with services imports at USD13.53 billion.
  • It’s important to note that the RBI’s figures are provisional and subject to further updates which are published quarterly as part of India’s overall balance-of-payments data.

Airtel Payments Bank, Park+ team up to enable FASTag-based parking solution at Varanasi airport
On July 4, 2023, the Airtel Payments Bank has collaborated with Park+ to enable FASTag-based smart parking at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport, Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.

  • This smart parking solution allows automatic cashless payments at airport parking.
  • The parking fee payment is deducted through the FASTag associated with the vehicle, which reduced the time required to make the payment.
  • Amit Lakhotia is the Founder and CEO of Park+.

Education financing startup Propelld gets NBFC licence from RBI
Education financing startup, Propelld has procured a non-banking financial company (NBFC) license from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to disburse loans worth Rs 2000 Cr by Financial Year(FY)24 and to bolster its direct lending proposition.

  • Previously, Propelld provided lending solutions by partnering with NBFCs but now the new license will help the company to lend directly along with functioning as a loan service provider (LSP).

With the NBFC Licence, Propelld will provide tailored loan products, flexible repayment options and competitive interest rates to its customers, particularly in tier two and tier three cities.

GAIL accredited with Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) T3 Status
On 23rd June 2023, Gas Authority Of India Limited (Gail (India) Limited), a Maharatna – central public sector undertaking (CPSU) accredited with Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) T3 Status which is a highest level of facilitation for Importers & Exporters by Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, Ministry of Finance.

  • AEO is a programme run by the World Customs Organisation (WCO)SAFE Framework (2005) of Standards to secure and facilitate global trade, it aims to improve international supply chain security, facilitate the flow of genuine goods, and increase the ease of doing business in India.

Benefits of AEO Certification:
i.In 2016 the ACP (Accredited Client Programme) and AEO (Authorized Economic Operator) merged into a combined three-tier AEO programme which awards certificates to importers and exporters based on three levels of accreditation, namely AEO T1, AEO T2, and AEO T3, with AEO T3 being the highest degree of accreditation and providing the most benefits.

  • The AEO Programme was introduced as a pilot project in 2011.

ii.The holder of an AEO-T3 certificate would be granted greater ease of import and export of their consignments, more than AEO T1 and AEO T2 holders.
iii.AEO-T3 certificate holders will have the facility that their containers will not be selected for scanning at the ports and borders, except on the basis of specific intelligence.
iv.AEO-T3 certificate holders are not required to provide a bank guarantee. However, it should be noted that if the competent body has ordered the provisional release of seized goods, the option of no bank guarantee will not be available.

NATO extended the tenure of Jens Stoltenberg as Secretary General of NATO up to October 2024NATO extends Jens Stoltenberg's tenure as chief for one yearOn 4th July 2023, the 31 members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), an intergovernmental military alliance decided to extend the tenure of Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary General of NATO for another year until 1st October 2024. Jens Stoltenberg’s term was supposed to end in September 2023.

  • Jens Stoltenberg, a former Prime Minister of Norway (from 2000 to 2001; 2005-2013) became NATO Secretary General in 2014. His term has already been extended 3 times.
  • This is the fourth time he got his term extended by NATO.
  • The decision about his extension will be endorsed by NATO Heads of State and Government at the Vilnius Summit which is scheduled to be held in on 11-12 July 2023 in Vilnius, Lithuania.

i. Jens Stoltenberg was born on 16 March 1959, in Oslo, Norway.
ii. From 2002 to 2014, he was the Leader of the Norwegian Labour Party (Det Norske Arbeiderparti; DNA), a social-democratic political party in Norway
iii. Prior to his career in NATO, he was the United Nation’s (UN) Special Envoy on Climate Change from 2013 to 2014.
iv. He also chaired UN High-level Panels on climate financing and the coherence between development, humanitarian assistance and environmental policies.

i. On 23rd January 2023, Jens Stoltenberg received an Honorary Award of the Verkhovna Rada, the unicameral Parliament of Ukraine.

BCCI Appointed Former Indian Cricketer Ajit Agarkar as Chairman of Senior Men’s Selection Committee
On 4th July 2023, Ajit Agarkar, the former Indian Cricketer, has been appointed as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) new chairman of the Senior Men’s Selection Committee by succeeding the previous chairman Chetan Sharma, who resigned from he post in February 2023.

  • Ajit Agarkar was unanimously recommended to the post by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), consisting of Sulakshana Naik, Ashok Malhotra, and Jatin Paranjape.
    Note: He was recommended based on seniority – total number of Test matches.
  • The Senior Men’s Selection Committee chaired by Ajit Agarkar consists of Shiv Sundar Das, Subroto Banerjee, Salil Ankola, and Sridharan Sharath.

About Ajit Agarkar:
i.Agarkar hailing from Mumbai, Maharastra, has played 26 Tests, 191 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and four Twenty20 International (T20I) for India and has also taken part in 110 first-class, 270 List A, and 62 T20 matches for Mumbai.
ii.He still holds the record for the fastest half-century by an Indian batter in ODI, achieved with a 21-ball fifty against Zimbabwe in 2000. He also held the record for being the fastest to reach 50 ODI wickets, accomplished the feat in just 23 matches.
iii.He was a part of India’s victorious squad in the inaugural T20 World Cup held in South Africa in 2007.
iv.In the Indian Premier League (IPL), He played for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

ACQUISITIONS & MERGERS  

IDFC Ltd to merge with IDFC First Bank in a share exchange ratio of 155:100  IDFC First Bank to merge with IDFC Ltd in 155-100 share exchange ratioOn 3rd July 2023, the board of directors of IDFC First Bank Limited approved the scheme of amalgamation of IDFC Limited with IDFC First bank and the share exchange ratio is fixed at 155:100.

  • IDFC First Bank has proposed to complete the merger by the end of 2023.

The scheme is subjected to receipt of requisite approvals from e Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), the Competition Commission of India (CCI), the National Company Law Tribunal(NCLT), BSE Limited (formerly Bombay Stock Exchange) and the National Stock Exchange of India Limited (NSE India) and other statutory and regulatory authorities and shareholders.
About the Scheme of Amalgamation:
i.Following the merger, shareholders of IDFC Ltd will get 155 shares of IDFC First Bank for every 100 shares held in the former

  • The Share Exchange Ratio for the proposed merger shall be 155 equity shares of face value of Rs 10 each fully paid-up of IDFC FIRST Bank for every 100 equity shares of face value of Rs 10 each fully paid-up of IDFC Limited.

ii. With this merger, the IDFC Limited’s shareholders will become the direct shareholders of IDFC First Bank.
Note: This will be the second major merger deal in the financial sector in 2023 after HDFC Bank merged with Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC).
2 Step Process:
i.The IDFC group rejig scheme is a two-step process.

  • First, IDFC Financial Holding Company Limited (HFCL) will be amalgamated with IDFC Limited.
  • Second, the IDFC Limited will amalgamate with IDFC First Bank.

ii. The reduction of the securities premium account of IDFC First Bank is a part of the scheme.
iii. The companies have successfully completed all the stages of corporate simplifications, as stated in an exchange filing, the next phase involves amalgamation with IDFC First Bank Limited.
Outcomes of the merger:
i. The merger will lead to simplification of the corporate structure of IDFC HFCL, IDFC Ltd, and IDFC First Bank by consolidating them into a single entity and will help streamline the regulatory compliances of the previous entities.
ii. This will also support the creation of an institution with diversified public and institutional shareholders with no promoter holding.
iii. As a result of the proposed merger, the standalone book value per share of the IDFC First bank would increase by 4.9% as calculated on audited financials as of March 31, 2023.
Additional Info:
As per RBI’s licensing rules on February 22, 2013, IDFC as a promoter was required to hold a minimum of 40% equity in the bank for 5 years till September 30, 2020. Since then, IDFC got approval from RBI to merge IDFC and its holding company (IDFC HFCL) with the bank.      

CCI approves acquisition of Marnix Lux by Concentrix Corporation
On 4th July 2023, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) approved the indirect acquisition of Marnix Lux SA (Marnix Lux) by Concentrix Corporation, and acquisition of approximately 22% shareholding in combined company by the shareholders of Marnix Lux.
i.The acquirer Concentrix Corporation is a United States of America(USA) based publicly listed company, engaged in providing customer experience services, a segment of Information Technology and Information Technology enabled services.
ii.The target company Marnix Lux is the parent company of Webhelp, which is active in the provision of business process outsourcing services and specialised services.

SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

Elena Introduces India’s First NavIC – Based PNT DeviceElena Introduces India's First NavIC - Based PNT DeviceElena Geo Systems,a Space Technology Company and Optimus Logics, two companies based in Bengaluru in Karnataka, have successfully developed handheld devices called PNT (Positioning, Navigation, and Timing) that are driven by satellite communications. This project was funded by the Department of Telecommunications under the Digital Communication Innovation Square (DCIS) scheme.It will become India’s first hand-held NavIC-based navigation device.
Key highlights:
i.The 1st lot of PNT devices will be manufactured by Elena Geo Systems.
ii.The PNT device consists of a 5G mobile phone and NavIC chip along with its adapter and receiver to be able to communicate with NavIC satellite.

  • Elena’s NavIC chip enables “very accurate” positioning, navigation and timing applications and could potentially replace the widely-used American Global Positioning System (GPS).
  • The Elena’s PNT handheld device provides accurate location and navigation coordinates in high altitudes where neither Google Map nor Global Positioning System (GPS) functions and could replace the American GPS.
  • Optimus Logics manufactures the 5G mobile phone under the brand name ‘Rhino’, which was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15, 2022.

iii.These devices will be useful during during disaster management, railway track surveillance and high altitude emergency situations.
iv.The need to manufacture the PNT device came in September 2019 from the Ministry of Defence to develop an indigenous product for the Indian armed forces.
v.The device gives an accurate location in forests, remote areas, deep into desert, tracking canals where there are no mobile towers.

India Launches First 100% DME-Fueled Tractor for Sustainable On and Off-Road Usage
India Launches its 1st ever 100% Dimethyl Ether-Fuelled TractorResearchers at  Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) Kanpur have developed the India’s first tractor/vehicle that operates solely on 100% Dimethyl Ether (DME), an indigenous and renewable fuel. This breakthrough positions DME as a viable alternative fuel and engine technology for conventional diesel engines used in agriculture and transportation sectors.
i.The research was supported by the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) and was aligned with NITI Aayog’s ‘Methanol Economy’ program.
ii.This groundbreaking development by IIT Kanpur sets a new benchmark in the field of sustainable transportation, opening doors to a promising future where renewable fuels drive India’s journey towards a cleaner and greener environment.
Key Points:
i. Dimethyl Ether (DME) is an indigenous and renewable fuel that has been widely adopted in countries like the United States, Japan, China, Sweden, Denmark, and Korea for powering vehicles.
ii. The DME-powered tractor presents a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution for a wide range of agricultural applications.

Indian Men’s Football team defeat Kuwait to lift 2023 SAFF Championships for 9th time India Defeats Kuwait 5-4 In Penalties To Win 9th SAFF Championship TitleOn 4th July 2023, Indian Football Team (also known as ‘Blue Tigers’) won the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Bangabandhu Championship 2023 defeating Kuwait national football team at the finals, in Sree Kanteerava Stadium, Bengaluru, Karnataka.

  • The 2023 SAFF Championships marks India’s 9th SAFF Championship title and second consecutive title after it won in 2021 SAFF Championships in Maldives (defeated Nepal).
  • India previously had won the championships in 1993, 1997, 1999, 2005, 2009,2011,2015, and 2021.

About SAFF Championship 2023:
i.The 14th edition SAFF Championship 2023 held from 21th June to 4th July 2023, saw participation of eight teams including India, Kuwait, Nepal, Pakistan, Lebanon, Maldives, Bhutan, Bangladesh.

  • Kuwait and Lebanon are the two Non SAFF members invited to this tournament.

ii.India won the finals by penalty Shootout (5-4) after the draw (1-1).

First ever International Day of Women in Diplomacy – 24th June 2023International Day of Women in Diplomacy - June 24 2023The United Nations (UN)’s first ever International Day of Women in Diplomacy (IDWID) was observed on 24th June 2023 to recognize the role of Women in Diplomacy as in furthering the Socio-Economic Equitable and Inclusive Sustainable Development.

  • The theme of IDWID 2023 is “Breaking Barriers, Shaping the Future: Women in Diplomacy for Sustainable Development”. 

Background:
During its 76th Session, United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/76/269 on 20 June 2022 and proclaimed the 24th June of every year as the International Day of Women in Diplomacy  (IDWID) .

  • 24th June 2023 marks the observance of the 1st ever International Day of Women in Diplomacy.

Note: As of January 2023, there were 34 women serving as heads of state and/or government of 31 countries.

First high level forum for IDWID 2023: 
On 23rd June 2023, The Royal Academy of Science International Trust (RASIT) and the Permanent Mission of Malta to the UN organised (virtually) the First High-Level Forum celebrating IDWID 2023.
i.The forum, organised by the RASIT’s programs: World Youth League and Women in Science International League discussed the role of women diplomats in Breaking Barriers, re-Shaping the Future of achieving the three pillars of sustainable development: economic prosperity, social justice, and environmental integrity.
ii.The Inaugural Forum of the IDWID featured interactive conversations led by youth with women diplomats in the international community and 4 high-level conversations with distinguished women ambassadors.

MP CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan initiated the registration of Mukhyamantri Sikho Kamao Yojana for youths in MP MP CM Chouhan launches Mukhyamantri Sikho Kamao YojanaShivraj Singh Chouhan, Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh (MP) implemented the  Mukhyamantri Sikho-Kamao Yojana  (MMSKY) (CM Learn and Earn Scheme) for the skill development of the youths of MP.

  • He started the process of registration of youth applicants in this scheme and interacted with the youths during the event organised at the Ravindra Bhavan in Bhopal, MP.
  • The scheme-related training will begin on 1st August 2023.

About Mukhyamantri Sikho Kamao Yojana:
The scheme aims to facilitate the ‘On the Job Training (OJT)’ opportunities in registered industrial and vocational establishments, enabling young individuals to get industry-suitable skills.

  • Apart from training the individuals will also benefit from a monthly stipend provided by the Government of MP.

Features of the scheme:
Under the MMSKY scheme, there are about 700 different types of works and individuals can apply as per their interest using a web portal, https://mmsky.mp.gov.in/.
Eligibility:
i. The candidate should be 18 to 29 years of age.
ii. The candidate should be the permanent resident of Madhya Pradesh.
iii. Candidates should have the educational qualification of class 12th, ITI pass or above.
iv. The candidates should have completed their registration and completion of e-KYC (Electronic Know Your Customer) on Samagra ID Portal.
Note: Samagra ID given by the Samagra Portal of MP is a 9 digit number, which is provided to every citizen of MP, just as an Aadhaar card.
Benefits:
The stipend benefits provided to the individuals learning under the scheme is, for:

  • 12th Pass, the stipend will be Rs.8,000
  • Industrial Training Institute (ITI) Pass candidates will get Rs.8,500
  • Diploma Holders will get Rs.9,000
  • Post Graduates will get Rs.10,000

Sarbananda Sonowal Laid the Foundation Stone for Inland Waterways Transport Terminal in Assam
On 4th July 2023, the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW) and Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal laid the foundation stone of Inland Waterways Transport (IWT) terminal to be developed at Bogibeel in Dibrugarh, Assam along the banks of the River Brahmaputra, (National Waterways 2).
The tourist-cum-cargo IWT terminal will be developed at Rs 46.60 crores and is scheduled to be completed by February 2024.

  • The terminal will help in rejuvenating inland waterways transportation in the region for both cargo and passenger movement, by helping the  growth of trade and commerce.

Note: The IWT terminal is built under the aegis of the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) – the nodal agency for inland waterways of the MoPSW, will have many modern features.
