BEML signs MoU with CSIR-NAL for Development of Two-Seater Trainer Aircraft; HAL receives proposal for 70 Trainer AircraftBEML, NAL sign MoU to jointly develop 2-seater trainer aircraDuring the Aero India 2021 show being held at Yelahanka Air Force Base, Bengaluru, Karnataka, BEML Ltd (previously Bharat Earth Movers Limited) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with CSIR-NAL (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-National Aerospace Laboratory) for development of two-seater trainer aircraft through technology transfer.

HAL receives Proposal for 70 basic Trainer Aircraft:
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has received a Request for Proposal (RFP) to manufacture of 70 Trainer Aircraft HTT 40 from Indian Air Force (IAF).

  • HTT is indigenously designed and developed by HAL.
  • The production works will be carried out at HAL’s 2 manufacturing units at Bengaluru & Nashik (Maharashtra).
  • The indigenous contents on the Trainer Aircrafts is set to be more than 60%

IIT Kharagpur and NIUA Signs MoU for ‘Building Accessible Safe and Inclusive Indian Cities (BASIIC)’i.On February 3, 2021 Indian Institute of Technology(IIT) Kharagpur signed a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) with the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) for ‘Building Accessible Safe and Inclusive Indian Cities (BASIIC).

Number of New Cancer Cases in North East Region expected to increase to 57, 131 by 2025: ICMR-NCDIR ReportAccording to the report ‘Profile of Cancer and Related Health Indicators in the North East Region of India-2021’ released by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) & National Centre for Disease Informatics & Research (NCDIR), the number of New Cancer Cases in North East Region (NER) is set to increase to 57, 131 by 2025, which is a big increase over the estimated 50, 317 cases of Cancer in NER in 2020.

  • The report prepared by ICMR-NCDIR has been funded by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India.
  • The report provides Estimates of Cancer cases & Data regarding types of Cancer in the NER region.
  • The findings will be helpful in developing a Comprehensive Cancer Prevention & Control Plan for the entire NER.

ii.Key Findings:
Gender:

  • The Incidence of Cancer was higher among men than women in all states of NER region except Manipur & Sikkim
  • The Highest age-adjusted cancer incidence rate in males (269.4 per 100, 000) was recorded in Aizawl, Mizoram.
  • Among Females Highest cancer incidence rate (219.8 per 100, 000) was recorded in Papumpare, Arunachal Pradesh, which is the highest in both the region and in India.

Commonly Occurring Cancer:

  • The Most commonly occurring Cancer among Men are of Oesophagus (13.6%) followed by Lung (10.9%)
  • Among Women it is Breast Cancer (14.5%) followed by Cervix Uteri (12.2%)
  • The probability of Developing Cancer in Lifetime is highest in Kamrup urban, Assam – 1 in every 4 males & 1 in every 6 females.

PM Modi Released Postage Stamp to Mark the Beginning of Centenary Celebration of Chauri Chaura IncidentOn 4th February 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the postage stamp to mark the beginning of the centenary celebrations of the Chauri Chaura Incident in Uttar Pradesh(UP) over a virtual platform. The stamp was released during the event organised to inaugurate the Centenary celebration of the Chauri Chaura incident.
Chauri Chaura Centenary Celebration:
i.The state government has planned various events through 4th February 2022 at all the 75 districts of the state to mark the centenary celebration of Chauri Chaura.
ii.As a part of the celebration, 99 people, the descendants of those who were involved in the Chauri Chaura incident, will be honoured.
iii.The state government has also planned to develop the “Chauri Chaura Shaheed Memorial”in Gorakhpur as a heritage tourist site.
Chauri Chaura Incident:
i.On 4th February 1922, a group of freedom fighters who participated in the non-cooperation movement led by Mahatma Gandhi were killed during the police firing at Chauri Chaura, Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.
ii.Following this attack the demonstrators set the police station on fire which killed 3 civilians and 22 policemen.
iii.As the direct result of the chauri chaura incident, On 12th February 1922, Mahatma Gandhi halted the non-cooperation movement at national level.

GRSE signs contract with Seychelles to deliver Fast Patrol Vessel,ZoroasterGarden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) has signed a contract with Seychelles for delivering 1 Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) called Zoroaster to the Seychelles Coast Guard.

  • “Zoroaster” will be a powerful, fuel-efficient platform which will be capable of performing operations like Patrolling, anti-smuggling, anti-poaching & search and rescue operations.
  • The overall design of the FPV was developed indigenously by GRSE.

i.Capabilities:

  • It can travel at a maximum speed of 34 Knots & has an endurance of more than 1, 500 Nautical miles.
  • The 50-metre-long Vessel is equipped with a waterjet propulsion system & fully air-conditioned modular accommodation for 35 personnel.
  • It is capable of undertaking maritime missions including timely interceptions.
  • The main armament of the ship will be a 40/60 gun.

MoAFW Gets DGCA Nod for a 1st of its kind Pilot Study using drones to Capture Crop Images in 100 Districts under PMFBYi.The Directorate General of Civil Aviation(DGCA) gave approval to Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare(MoAFW) to use drones(Unmanned Aerial Vehicles -UAVs) to capture images of rice and wheat fields in 100 districts to assess crop yields at gram panchayat level under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), Government of India’s Crop Insurance Scheme.
ii.This is the 1st time in India that remote sensing technology based largest pilot study is conducted for crop yield estimation

GoI brings Ropeways and Alternate Mobility Solutions under Ministry of Road Transport and HighwaysGovernment of India (GoI) has brought Ropeways and Alternate Mobility Solutions (such as Ropeway, Cable Car, Funicular Railway & Electric Public transport) under the ambit of Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) by amending the Government of India (Allocation of Business) Rules, 1961.Ropeways earlier work under Ministry of Railways.

  • MoRTH will now be responsible for development, construction, research and policy formulation in Ropeways and Alternate Mobility Solutions.
  • Besides this, it will also be the main body for formulation of institutional, financial, and regulatory framework for the concerned sectors.
  • It will help India in the development of sustainable alternative mobility solutions in the transport sector for urban, hilly and will ensure last mile connectivity.

Environment Ministry approves Lakhwar Electricity Project on Yamuna River, Uttarakhand On 4th February 2021, the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) gave approval for the Lakhwar Electricity Project at a cost of Rs 5747.17 crore on the Yamuna river at Dehradun district, Uttarakhand. With this project, Electricity upto 572.54 million units can be generated per year.
i.In addition to the electricity generated, the water storage capacity is also increased.
330 metric cusec meters of additional water can be stored.
6 states (Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh) will get drinking water supply and water for irrigation.

India’s Tea Output Drops 9.7% in 2020 Due to Flood & COVID Restriction; Lifts Average Prices to Record Highi.The production of tea in India dropped by 9.7% in 2020 due to the flood and movement restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  The reduction in the tea production increased the price of tea by 31% from the price of 2019, to a record price of Rs.184.69 per Kg. 
ii.This increase in price has supported the Indian tea industry which was under severe stress due to the rising production cost.
iii.India has produced around 1255.60 million kilogram of tea in 2020, which is around 9.7% lesser than the production in 2019.
iv.The Tea export of India during the first 11 months of 2020 has fallen to 18.2% from the previous years 187.92 million Kg.

More than 39 Billion In-school Meals were Missed Across the Globe During COVID-19 Pandemic Closures: UNICEF Reporti.On 28th January 2021, The United Nations Children’s Fund(UNICEF) Office of Research – Innocenti and the World Food Programme (WFP) released a new report titled “COVID-19: Missing More Than a Classroom. The impact of school closures on children’s nutrition” which states that more than 39 billion in-school meals were missed due to the closure of schools during the COVID-19 pandemic.
ii.According to the WFP, as of 2019 the largest number of beneficiaries(in millions) of school feeding programmes are in India (around 100), Brazil (48), China (44), South Africa (9) and Nigeria (9).
iii.It is observed that the Midday Meals Scheme (MDMS) of India has reduced the calorie deficits in children by 30%.

Maharashtra Cabinet approves ‘Chief Minister Water Conservation Programme’On February 4, 2021 Maharashtra Cabinet headed by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray approved the implementation of INR 1, 340 Crore worth ‘Chief Minister Water Conservation Programme’. It will be implemented for a period of 3 years (April 2020-March 2023) by the Soil and Water Conservation Department of Maharashtra.
i.Objective of the Scheme – To undertake repair & restoration of existing water bodies in Maharashtra & improve the irrigation capacity.
ii.Functions of the scheme

  • To increase the storage capacity around 7, 916 water resources will be repaired for use in small villages.
  • A special repair programme for small dams (fixing leakage & increasing storage capacity) will be initiated. Small dams within the irrigation capacity limit of up to 600 hectares on water bodies like ponds, lakes and dams, cement nullah dams will be taken up for repair.

iii.Inspection & Implementation:
The programme will be inspected by the Soil and Conservation Department’s Vigilance and Quality Control Team periodically.

  • A Project Implementation Cell will be set up at the state level to monitor the progress of the project.

CM Sarbananda Sonowal Inaugurated Assam’s First Heliport at MajuliOn 4th February 2021, Sarbananda Sonowal, Chief Minister of Assam, inaugurated the first Heliport of Assam in Majuli district. The heliport was constructed at a cost of Rs.50 lakh.
This heliport is aimed to boost the tourism of Majuli, the World’s largest river island.

  • The Heliport has the facility to simultaneously land 3 helicopters.

Efforts to boost Majuli tourism:
i.The Chief Minister also inaugurated a guest house in Majuli, which was constructed at a cost of Rs.50 Lakh.
ii.Various projects were undertaken by the state government to enhance the road infrastructure in Majuli.
iii.Initiatives are taken for the construction of a bridge connecting Majuli with Jorhat.
Two Ro-Pax ferries will also be introduced into service to enhance the river transportation in Majuli.
iv.He also laid the foundation for the infrastructure improvement project of Sankarjyoti High School at a cost of Rs 25 lakh under the United Fund for 2019-2020.
