India, Nepal Signed MoU to Reconstruct Projects Damaged by 2015 EarthquakeIndia, Nepal sign pacts to reconstruct over 100 projects damaged by 2015 earthquakeIndia and Nepal signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) for the reconstruction of 14 cultural heritage and 103 health sector projects across different districts of Nepal, which were damaged by the 2015 earthquake.

  • The projects will be reconstructed at a cost of 420 crore Nepalese Rupees (~$36 million).

Key Points:
i.The reconstruction project agreement was signed between the Indian Embassy in Nepal and Nepal’s Central Level Project Implementation Unit (Building) of the National Reconstruction Authority (NRA).
ii.The MoU was signed in the presence of Karun Bansal, First Secretary (Development Partnership and Reconstruction) of the Indian mission and Shyam Kishore Singh, Project Director, CLPIU (Building), Nepal.
iii.The Indian government has allocated a grant of $250 million under the post-quake package, including USD 50 million each for education, cultural heritage, and other sectors, including $100 million for the housing sector.
iv.In total, the Nepal government has undertaken 71 education sector projects, 28 cultural heritage sector projects, 147 health facilities, and the construction of 50,000 houses with India’s grant assistance.
v.2015 Earthquake: In April 2015, the Nepal earthquake (also known as the Gorkha earthquake) killed nearly 9,000 people, injured around 22,000 people. It has devastated more than 800,000 houses and schools.

NeGD Signed MoU with NLU, Delhi and NLIU, Bhopal to establish Cyber lab for Online Capacity Building ProgrammeNeGD signs MoU with National Law University, Delhi and National Law Institute University (NLIU), BhopalNational e-Governance Division (NeGD) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology(MeitY), Government of India has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Law University(NLU), Delhi and National Law Institute University (NLIU), Bhopal to establish a Cyber Lab for the “Online capacity building Programme on Cyber Law, Crime Investigation and Digital Forensics”.

  • Abhishek Singh, President & CEO of NeGD, and Prof. Srikrishna Deva Rao from NLU, Delhi,  and Prof. (Dr.) V. Vijayakumar from NLIU Bhopal signed the MoU on behalf of NeGD, and NLU and NLIU respectively.

Aim:
To revive a response from a wide spectrum across the law enforcement including senior officers of Law Enforcement Agencies and also from Judiciary.
Goal:
To enable Police Officers, State Cyber Cells, Law Enforcement Agencies, Prosecutors and Judicial Officers to acquire requisite skills to deal with Cyber Forensics cases efficiently & effectively as per the Indian Cyber Law while adopting global best practices, standards and guidelines.
Collaboration NeGD with NLIU and NLU:
i.This collaboration of NeGD with NLIU and NLU will offer a 9 months online Post Graduate(PG) Diploma to 1000 Officials through its Learning Management System (LMS)
ii.The cyber lab equipped with Hybrid architecture will support virtual and physical modes of capacity building in Cyber Law, Cybercrime Investigation and Digital Forensics
iii.Other law schools/ universities like National Law School of India University (Bangalore), Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (Patiala) will be onboarded in the hub for future endeavours.
iv.The National e-Governance Division (NeGD) will develop the e-content based on the support received from faculty members.

APEDA signs MoU with ICAR-Indian Institute of Millet Research to Boost ExportAPEDA signs MoU with ICAR-IIMR to boost millet exportsThe Agricultural and Processed Food Product Export Development Authority (APEDA) has signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR)- Indian Institute of Millet Research(IIMR) to increase export production by increasing quality and processing.
Objective:To increase the export production with necessary links in supply chain, technical warehouses , clinical research and awareness.
Note –United Nations declares 2023 as International Year of Millets (IYM).
Key Points
i.It would promote the commercial processed varieties developed by ICAR-IIMR. IIMR will help in  enhancing value addition and nutrients.
ii.A joint coordination committee will be formed. Which will consist of representatives from APEDA and ICAR-IIMR.
iii.Development and implementation in improving facilities like traceability, Artificial intelligence, etc., would promote millet exports.
iv.Creation of a Millet Export Promotion Forum with the joint support of major stakeholders. The forum will identify export clusters for getting increased and value added produce and it will link stakeholders with FPOs(Farmer Producer Organization).
v.In order to increase export production APEDA has also signed a series of MoUs with Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, University of Agricultural Sci
ences, Bengaluru, National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED) and others.

  • India has entered into the top 10 list of agricultural produce exporters.
  • So far under Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi, around Rs 1,57,000 crore has been deposited in the bank accounts of more than 11 crore farmers of India.

India Became Asia’s 1st Country to Launch a Plastics Pact
World-Wide Fund for Nature-India (WWF India) and the CII have collaborated to develop a platform named ‘India Plastics Pact (IPP)’ to promote a circular system for plastics. India became the 1st Asian country to develop a plastics pact.

  • The pact was launched by the British High Commission in India, Alexander Ellis, at the 16th Sustainability Summit 2021 of the CII.
  • The pact is supported by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production (WRAP).

Indian Army set to procure over 100 “SkyStriker” – a type of suicide dronesIndian Army to procure over 100 'SkyStriker' drones for Balakot-type missionsIn September 2021, Indian Army signed a Rs. 100 crore worth contract with the Joint Venture between India’s Alpha Design & Israel’s Elbit Security Systems, for the procurement of over 100 – ‘SkyStrikers’ under its emergency procurement powers. All the ‘SkyStriker’ type drones will be manufactured in the Bangalore manufacturing unit of Alpha Design.
i.They are also known as “Suicide Drones”, because of its autonomous system that is designed to directly crash over the target with its pre-loded 5 kgs of Warhead.
ii.Previously in August 2021, Alpha Design signed 2 defence procurement contracts with the Indian Air Force (IAF).

Dr. Munjapara Mahendrabhai Launches “Ayush Aapke Dwar” Campaign at Ayush Ministry

Dr. Munjapara Mahendrabhai, Minister of State, Ministry of Ayush, launched the  “Ayush Aapke Dwar” Campaign from Ayush Bhawan by distributing medicinal plants to staff.
The Ministry of AYUSH launched the scheme from more than 45 locations across 21 states of  India by distributing around 2 lakh medicinal plant saplings.
Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of AYUSH, launched this campaign from Mumbai.

  • The campaign aims to distribute medicinal plant sapling to 75 lakh households across India in 1 year.
  • The medicinal plants include Tejpatta, Stevia, Ashoka, Jatamansi, Giloy/Guduchi, Ashwagandha, Kumari, Shatavari, Lemongrass, Guggulu, Tulsi, Sarpagandha, Kalmegh, Brahmi and Amla.

THE World University Rankings 2022: 3 Indian Universities in top 400, Topped by UK’s OxfordTimes World University Ranking 2022i.In accordance with the ‘Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2022’, 3 Indian universities made it to the top 400 global rankings.  Among them, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru (Karnataka) is on the top and continues to be between 301-350 cohort.
ii.It was followed by IIT (Indian Institute of Technology)-Ropar (Punjab) and Mysuru (Karnataka) based private university JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research in the 351-400 group.
iii.This University Rankings is topped by the United Kingdom’s (UK) University of Oxford for the 6th consecutive year.

Sand and Dust Storms Impact over 500 Million People in India: APDIM Report Sand and dust storms impact over 500 million in IndiaThe Asian and Pacific Centre for the Development of Disaster Information Management (APDIM), the regional institution of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP), has released the report on sand and dust storms named ‘Sand and Dust Storms Risk Assessment in Asia and the Pacific’.

  • As per the risk assessments of the report, more than 500 million people in India are exposed to medium and high levels of poor air quality due to sand and dust storms.
  • The Asia-Pacific region is the world’s 2nd largest in terms of mineral dust emissions.
  • Energy sector: The sand and dust storms impact the generation of electricity by solar power plants. India has 1,584 gigawatt-hours (GWh) energy loss in 2019, in economic terms, the impact is greater than USD 107 million a year.
  • Around 60 million people from the cities of Karachi (Pakistan), Lahore (Pakistan), and Delhi have experienced more than 170 dusty days a year in 2019 due to sand and dust storms.

World Social Protection Report 2020-22 by ILO: Half of World Population, 4.1 billion don’t have Social SecurityILO's World Social Protection Report 2020-22In September 2021, International Labour Organization (ILO) has released its flagship report on social protection named ‘World Social Protection Report 2020-22: Social protection at the crossroads – in pursuit of a better future’.

  • As per the report, half of the global population i.e. 53 percent (4.1 billion) did not have any kind of social security.
  • As of 2020, only 46.9 percent of the global population are effectively covered by at least 1 social protection benefit.
  • Government Spending: On average, around 12.8 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) were spent by the countries on social protection (excluding health). High-income countries spend around 16.4 percent, whereas low-income countries spent only 1.1 percent of their GDP on social protection.
  • Regional Inequalities: Europe and Central Asia –  84 percent of people being covered by at least one benefit. Americas – 64.3 percent; Asia and Pacific -44 percent; the Arab States -40 percent; and Africa – 17.4 per cent.

RSBVL acquires 57% stake in Strand Life Sciences for Rs 393 croresReliance Industries’ arm buys Strand Life Sciences’ stake for Rs 393 croreOn 3rd September 2021, Reliance Industries Limited’s (RIL) subsidiary – Reliance Strategic Business Ventures Limited (RSBVL) acquired 57.06% stake in Strand Life Sciences by buying over 2.28 crore shares in the company for Rs 393 crores. 
i.RIL is also planning to invest another Rs 160 crores in Strand Life Sciences by March 2023, increasing its total share in the company by about 80.3%, with a total of Rs 553 crore investment.
ii.The acquisition is a part of RIL’s initiative towards affordable access to the digital healthcare ecosystem in India with world-class technology.

ICICI Lombard gets Approval for the Acquisition of Bharti Axa from IRDAIICICI Lombard gets final IRDAI approval for Bharti Axa acquisitionIndia’s largest private sector general insurer, ICICI Lombard got the final in-principle approval from Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India(IRDAI) for the acquisition Bharti Axa General Insurance.
Highlights
i.Bharti AXA General Insurance is a joint venture of Bharti, an Indian business group with 51% and AXA, a global insurance and asset management company with 49% stake.
ii.According to the deal, the shareholders of the demerged company- Bharti and AXA will be allotted equity shares with Bharti General Ventures and Societe Beaujon shares.
iii.The shareholders of Bharti AXA shall receive 2 shares of ICICI Lombard for every 115 shares of Bharti AXA held by them as on the date of the approval.
iv.In 2020, Competition Commission of India (CCI), Bombay Stock Exchange ( BSE) was also approved for the acquisition.
v.IRDAI also grants approval to ICICI Bank to reduce stake in ICICI Lombard to 30%.

LIC picks up nearly 4% stake in Bank of India through open market transactionLIC picks up nearly 4% stake in Bank of India

Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India has picked up around 3.9% stakes (around 159007791 shares) of Bank of India(BOI) through Open Market Acquisition on 2nd September 2021. 

  • With this acquisition the stake of LIC in Bank of India has increased from 3.17% to 7.05%, equivalent to 289287324 shares. 
  • The BOI raised around Rs 2550 crore by allotting reference shares to qualified institutional buyers. 

Note:
According to the SEBI regulations, on substantial acquisition of shares and takeovers, companies have to inform the stock exchange when the entity holds more than 5% shares of a listed firm. 
About the acquisition:
i.The issue was opened on 25th August and closed on 30th August. 
ii.BOI aimed to raise around Rs 3000 crore equity capital through this issue. 
iii.LIC, ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company and Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance Company are the three investors which subscribed to more than 5% of the equity offered in the qualified institutional placement issue.
iv.With this acquisition the shareholding of the government in the bank has decreased from 90.34% to 82.50%. 
v.Following the allotment of the equity shares in the issues, the paid up capital equity shares of the bank has increased from Rs 3698.09 crore to Rs 4103.57 crore comprising of 410,35,66,070 number of equity shares

CSIR-NAL’s Hansa New Generation (NG) aircraft successfully made its Maiden FlightHansa New Generation (NG) aircrafti.On September 3, 2021, Hansa New Generation (NG) aircraft successfully made its maiden flight and all flight parameters were found normal. It is designed and developed by CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research)-National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), Bengaluru, Karnataka.
ii.The aircraft took off from HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) airport by Capt. Amit Dahiya, test pilot, flew at an altitude of 4000 ft. with a speed of 80 knots for about 20 minutes.
iii.It will be certified within the next 4 months.
iv.The project director of HANSA is Abbani Rinku.

The Poshan Maah 2021 will be observed as a part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. 
The observance of Poshan Maah aims to address malnutrition among children, protect the children who are suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition(SAM) and encourage consumption of a variety of vegetables and fruits among families in rural areas.

  • September 2021 marks the observance of the 4th Poshan Maah which will be celebrated as “Thematic Poshan Maah”.

Significance:
i.To ensure the outreach of the celebration the Poshan month has been subdivided into weekly themes focused on improving holistic nutrition.
ii.The weekly theme for the activities to be taken up are,

  • September 1 to 7 – Plantation Activity as “PoshanVatika”
  • September  8 to 15 – Yoga and AYUSH for Nutrition
  • September 16 to 23 – Distribution of ‘Regional Nutrition Kit’ to Anganwadi beneficiaries of High Burden Districts.
  • September 24 to 30 – Identification of severe acute malnourished children and distribution of nutritious food.

Minister of WCD inaugurates Poshan 2.0:
Smriti Zubin Irani, the Union Minister for Women and Child Development(WCD) inaugurated Poshan 2.0, National Conference and urged all the districts to establish a Poshan Vatika(Nutrition Garden) during the nutrition month starting from September 1 to protect the children with SAM.

NTPC REL receives LoA to Develop  325MW in MP’s Shajapur Solar ParkNTPC REL gets LoA for developing 325MW in MP’sNTPC (Formerly known as National Thermal Power Corporation Limited)- Renewable Energy Limited (REL) received a Letter of Award(LoA) from the Chief Minister(CM) of Madhya Pradesh(MP)  Shivraj Singh Chauhan for developing   325 MW Solar Power Project in Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Limited (RUMSL) at Shajapur Solar Park, Shajapur district Madhya Pradesh.
Highlights
i.NTPC is planning to achieve 60 GW  renewable energy capacity by 2032 from existing 4 GW and invest IN R 1 trillion between 2019 and 2024 to become 130 GW power producer by 2032.
ii.India has also crossed the 100 GW  milestone of installed renewable energy capacity.
iii.NTPC is working with International Solar Alliance (ISA) in Cuba, Niger, and Malawi to set up solar parks. It is engaged as a facilitator by ISA and aiming to set 10GW capacity in ISA member countries.
iv.CM Shivraj Singh Chauhan also presented LoA to Mohit Bhargava, CEO of NTPC REL for the districts named Agar and Neemuch of 1500 MW capacity at Bhopal. State DISCOMS & Railways will buy power from these projects.

Ladakh signs MoU with BRO for Road Network upgradation Ladakh admin signs 'historic' MoU with BRO for upgradation of road networkOn 3rd September 2021, the Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) for construction & upgradation of its road network. The UT has also allocated 7 road & tunnel construction projects to BRO, reviewing its expertise in construction over hilly areas.
i.The successful completion of these road infrastructure projects will boost the tourism sector in the UT, thereby strengthening its economy.
Note – In August, BRO constructed the World’s highest motorable pass at Umling La Pass in eastern Ladakh at an altitude of 19,300 feet.
