DBT Launched Programme for “Strengthening Clinical Trial Research Capacity in Neighbouring Countries”Department-of-Biotechnology-launches-Programme-for-“Strengthening-Clinical-Trial-Research-Capacity-in-Neighbouring-Countries

i.On September 22, 2020, Department of Biotechnology (DBT), under the Ministry of Science & Technology, initiated the first phase of the “Training program to strengthen clinical trial research capacity for neighbouring countries” in partnership with Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to support researchers and investigator teams for enhancing and strengthening their clinical trial capabilities in compliance with ICH-GCP (International Conference on Harmonisation – Good clinical practice)
ii.The orientation to this training program was addressed by Dr Renu Swarup, Secretary, DBT and Chairperson, Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC).
iii.This initiation is on the lines of Ind-CEPI mission (India Centric Epidemic Preparedness) for Rapid Vaccine Development and Supporting Indian Vaccine Development which is aligned with the Global Initiative of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI).

Govt Raised limit for Use of SDRF funds by states from 35% to 50% to tackle COVID situationGovt-raises-limit-for-use-of-SDRF-funds-by-states-from-35-per-cent-to-50-per-cent-to-tackle-COVID-situation

On September 23, 2020, the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) for COVID specific infrastructure was increased from 35% to 50% to help States with more finances at their disposal to fight the coronavirus. This was announced during the virtual meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Chief Ministers of six states and one Union Territory with high Covid-19 caseload viz. Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.

  • During the meet, it was emphasised that micro zones should be formed for effective management of the coronavirus disease.
  • Also, the focus on effective testing, tracing, treatment, surveillance and clear messaging should be increased.

About State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF):
Constituted under Section 48 (1) (a) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, it is the primary fund available with State Governments for responses to notified disasters.

India-UK Water Partnership Forum held Virtually on Water ConservationIndia-UK Water Partnership Forum discuss on water conservation

i.On September 22, 2020, India-UK Water Partnership Forum was held virtually to discuss ways to collaborate on the issues pertaining to infrastructure development and water conservation. 
ii.The event was inaugurated by Indian High Commissioner to United Kingdom (UK), Gaitri Issar Kumar along with Ministry of Jal Shakti Secretary Upendra Prasad Singh while it was concluded by a special address from Rajiv Ranjan Mishra, Director General, National Mission for Clean Ganga (Namami Gange programme).
iii.During the meeting, delegations from India and the UK signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Ganga and the British water.

4th WEF’s Sustainable Development Impact Summit held Virtually; Delhi may have 8 months of 32°C temp by 21004th-Edition-WEF's-Sustainable-Development-Impact-Summit-held-virtually

i.From September 21—24, 2020, the World Economic Forum’s fourth and first fully virtual Sustainable Development Impact Summit 2020 was held under the banner “Realizing a Great Reset for Sustainable Development” to convene 2100 leaders from government, business, international organizations and civil society along with experts and innovators to initiate, accelerate and scale-up entrepreneurial solutions to tackle climate change and advance sustainable development.
ii.The summit was based on the five themes of Shared Prosperity, Catalysing cooperation, Better business, Harnessing technology, and Liveable planet.
iii.During the summit,  WEF’s ‘EarthTime Visualisation’ report was released which stated that Delhi may have eight months a year with temperature averaging 32°C by 2100, up from six at present.

Airports Authority of India Commenced Work on Airport Expansion Project in MaldivesIndia-commences-work-on-airport-expansion-project-in-Maldives

i.On the request of the Government of Maldives, the Government of India has decided to support the Hanimaadhoo International Airport expansion project under the USD 800 million Line of Credit from EXIM (Export-Import) Bank of India. 
ii.Following this, on September 23, 2020, Airports Authority of India (AAI) commenced work on the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this project which will be prepared in 2 months. It is one of the largest infrastructure and connectivity projects in northern Maldives.
iii.The project includes the extension of the runway to 2200 metres (to allow A320s, Boeing 737s to land), and, the upgradation of terminals, fuel farms, cargo terminal, fire station, etc.

i.On September 23, 2020 IDFC First Bank announced that it will launch SafePay, a digital facility. It enables contactless debit card payments by waving a smartphone against a Near Field Communication (NFC)-enabled Point of Sale(POS) terminal. 
ii.It is the 1st such facility which is made available in an integrated mobile banking app. iii.The SafePay feature has been successfully tested and certified by Visa.

Uday Kotak Gets 1 Year Extension as the Non-Executive Chairman of IL&FSKotak gets extension as chairman of IL&FS

On 23rd September 2020, The Government of India has extended the term of Uday Kotak, the Managing Director and CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank as the Chairman of Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services (IL&FS) to one more year till October 2021 as the Non-Executive Chairman of IL&FS.

  • This is the 2nd extension given to Uday Kotak since his appointment in 2018 as the chairman of IL&FS to complete the resolution of the company and its group companies (around 300 companies) which had a debt of more than Rs.90000 crore.

Resolution by the Board:
i.The board led by Uday Kotak resolved around 18% of the outstanding debt (around Rs1 lakh crore) of the company.
ii.The group has completed a sale of its 73.69% stake of its education business, under Schoolnet India Limited (SIL), to Falafal Technologies Private Limited (FTPL).
Key Points:
i.The subsidiary and associate companies of IL&FS set up by the ITNL International PTE Limited(IIPL), Singapore in Dubai have filed for opening of insolvency procedure in the Courts in Dubai.
ii.IIPL Singapore holds around 49% of the stakes of the ITNL Infrastructure Developer LLC, a limited liability company incorporated with the department of Economic Development Emirates of Dubai.
iii.IIPL Singapore holds around 100% of the stakes of the ITNL International DMCC, limited liability company incorporated with the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre, Emirates of Dubai

EESL Appoints Rajat Sud as its New Managing Director; Succeeds S GopalEESL appoints Rajat Sud as new managing director

On September 23, 2020 Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL), a Joint Venture(JV) of Public Sector Undertakings(PSUs) under the Ministry of Power, Government of India, appointed Rajat Sud as its new Managing Director(MD) from immediate effect. 
He takes charge from S Gopal, director (commercial), who was given the additional charge as interim MD.

Somalia’s President Appointed Mohamed Hussein Roble as New Prime Minister Somalia names new prime minister, unveils plan for elections

On 24th September 2020, Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed (nickname- Farmaajo), President of Somalia appointed Mohamed Hussein Roble, swedish trained civil engineer and political neophyte as the new Prime Minister(PM) of Somalia following the removal of the former PM Hassan Ali Khaire in July 2020.
All the 215 MP’s who attended the session chaired by President Farmaajo voted in support of the appointment of Hussein Roble as PM.
Elections of Somalia:
i.The Federal States of Somalia and the Government of Mogadishu have been negotiating on how to conduct the parliamentary and presidential elections.
ii.Opposing the complex system where the delegates of the state pick the lawmakers who will vote for the president, Somalia is set to hold the first fully democratic election “one man, one vote” since 1969.
iii.The President, regional heads and the mayor of Mogadishu have concluded that the fully democratic election within the limited time is not possible since the parliament expires in November 2020 and the term of the President Farmajo ends in February 2021.
iv.The Myriad clans (27775 delegates) of Somalia will vote and elect the 275 members of Parliament(MPs) for the lower house, who will elect the president, which is similar to the 2017 election.

Indigenously Developed Prithvi-II Missile Successfully Night Test Fired from Chandipur, OdishaIndigenously developed Prithvi-II missile testfired

i.On September 23, 2020, as a part of routine trail India successfully conducted the night testfire of its indigenously developed nuclear capable surface-to-surface Prithvi-II missile which was carried out from a mobile launcher from launch complex-3 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, Odisha. 
ii.The entire launch activity was carried out by Strategic Force Command (SFC) of the Army and monitored by scientists of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The missile was randomly chosen from the production stock.
iii.The last night time testfire of Prithvi-II was conducted successfully from the ITR on November 20, 2019.

Pixxel Enters into a Service Agreement with Momentus for Second Satellite LaunchIndia's Pixxel partners with Momentus for second satellite launch

i.On September 22, 2020 Momentus Inc. (Momentus), which provides in-space satellite transportation and infrastructure services and Pixxel, a Indian space-tech startup has signed an service agreement to launch the 2nd satellite of Pixxel to SSO orbit (Sun-synchronous orbit or heliosynchronous orbit) in December 2021 on top of a SpaceX Falcon-9 and also with option to fly again in 2022.
ii.The earth imaging satellite, which is the 1st satellite of Pixxel is scheduled to be launched on a Russian Soyuz rocket in November, 2020.

Suresh Angadi, MoS for Railways: 1st Central Minister to Die of COVID-19MoS Railways Suresh Angadi dies of COVID-19

On 23th September 2020, Suresh Channabasappa Angadi, Union Minister of State for Railways and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s Member of Parliament(MP) from Belagavi constituency of Karnataka passed away at the age of 65 after testing positive for COVID-19 at the Covid Facility, New Delhi. He is the first Central Minister to die of Coronavirus. He was born on 1st June 1955 at Belagavi, Karnataka.
About Suresh Angadi:
i.Suresh Angadi was a law graduate who served as the Vice President of BJP in Belagavi in 1996.
ii.He was elected as a Lok Sabha MP for the first time in the 2004 election and he was again elected for the 2nd and 3rd term in 2009 and 2014 elections.
iii.He served as a member of the Standing Committee on Food, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution, Human Resources Development and Defence.
iv.He was appointed as the Minister of State(MoS) for Railways after winning the 2019 general election (his 4th term).
v.He was the chairman of Suresh Angadi Education Foundation at Belgaum since 2009.
