MeitY & Meta Partners to Support XR Technology-Based Startups – XR Startup ProgramMeitY, Meta join hands to support XR technology-based startups across India

On 13th September 2022, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology’s (MeitYs) startup hub (MSH) and social media giant Meta (formerly known as Facebook) partnered to launch ‘XR Startup Program’ to support the growth of extended reality (XR) technology-based startups across India.

  • Attendees – The launch event was also attended by Joel Kaplan, the vice president of global policy at Meta, Facebook India managing director Ajit Mohan and other senior executives from the social media giant.

About the program:
i.XR Startup Program, focuses on skilling and building technological capabilities for the metaverse and also  includes emerging technologies such as Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR).
ii.This Program is supported by Meta’s XR Programs and Research Fund, a 2-year USD 50 million investment in programs and external research with industry partners, civil rights groups, governments, nonprofits and other academic institutions.
Significance:
i.The MSH and Meta together support 40 early-stage startups that are working in the field of XR technologies with a grant of Rs 20 lakh each.
ii.The program will also encourage early-stage innovators working on XR technology in the field of education, learning and skills, healthcare, gaming, entertainment, agritech, climate action, tourism and sustainability.

  • Initially, 80 innovators will be shortlisted to attend a bootcamp. Among which,16 innovators will be provided grants of Rs 20 lakh each for upscaling them from Research & Development (R&D) phase to developing workable products and services.
  • It further supports them in developing a minimum viable product or prototypes.

Implementation:
The XR Startup Program will be implemented by 4 institutions, that includes, International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad, Telangana (CIE IIIT-H); AIC SMU Technology Business Incubation Foundation (AIC-SMUTBI), Rangpo, Sikkim; Gujarat University Startup and Entrepreneurship Council (GUSEC), Ahmedabad, Gujarat; Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Delhi, New Delhi.

Indore to Become India’s First ‘Smart City’ with ‘Smart Addresses’Indore to become the country’s first ‘Smart City’ with ‘Smart Addresses’

Indore, Madhya Pradesh (MP) will become the first smart city with smart addresses after the implementation of a fully digital addressing system by the Indore Smart City.

  • A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Rajat Jain, co-founder of Pataa Navigations, and Rishav Gupta (IAS), CEO of Indore Smart City for advancing the smart city.
  • Pataa is working with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to develop a digital addressing system and it also developed patented technology for smart city upgradation.Pataa is a brief and distinctive code, that will help the user find the specific geotagged location.

About the MoU:
i.According to the MoU, Pataa app can be used by everyone and business and also all government agencies and emergency services including police, fire department, and ambulance for providing services like Electronic Know Your Customer (E-KYC) and geotagging.
ii.Pataa Navigation will integrate with government platforms such as electricity, agriculture, excise, women and child welfare, and education to provide access to Digital Addressing Systems.

  • Pataa will geotag MP Tourism’s all tourist destinations along with bus stops, light poles, public restrooms, and bus stops and integrate them with websites.

About Pataa App:
i.The Pataa App is a free service that helps in finding a specific geotagged location.
ii.Users of the Pataa Application can upload images of their homes, landmarks and such others along with their addresses in the full text or the user also has the option to record voice instructions for updates.

  • In the future, the user will be able to share a short code instead of entering the full address.

MoEFCC, UNDP & TERI come together to launch GEF Small Grants ProgrammeMoEFCC, UNDP & TERI come together to launch GEF Small Grants Programme

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) jointly collaborated to launch the “Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF-SGP)”.

  • The programme provides financial and technical support to projects that conserve and restore the environment while enhancing the lives of local communities.
  • The year 2022 marks the 7th operational phase of the programme.

Objective:
The programme aims to study and work on the themes of biodiversity, climate change and land degradation through NGOs (Non-Governmental Organisations).
Key points:
i.Under the programme, grants are provided to NGOs working in particular landscapes.

  • Virudhunagar & Ramanathapuram are selected as two districts representing the Indian coastal region in Tamil Nadu.

ii.TERI hosted a regional inception workshop for various NGOs to give suggestions about the protection of coastal regions due to climate change.

  • It also included a session that discussed the alignment of SGP with state-level policies and interventions by the State government and private institutions.

iii.In consultation with UNDP and the MoEFCC, SGP will release a request for proposal which will contain guidelines regarding a working plan of action.
iv.NGOs can choose different levels of grants, the highest is at USD 50,000.

  • The applications are reviewed by regional advisory committees before being passed onto the National Steering Committee.

About Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF-SGP):
i.It was launched in 1992, which is also the year of the Rio Earth Summit.The Program is specifically designed to mobilize bottom-up actions by empowering local civil society organizations, and poor and vulnerable communities, including women and Indigenous Peoples.
ii.It finances community-led initiatives to address global environmental issues.
iii.It is currently implemented by UNDP on behalf of the GEF partnership.

TDB Extends Support for Indigenous Component Manufacturing in Defence Sector

The Technology Development Board (TDB), a statutory body under the Department of Science and Technology (DST) has entered into an agreement with the Ghaziabad Precision Products Private Limited (GPP), Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, to support manufacturing of indigenous components critical to SUKHOI-30MK1 (SU-30MK1) Aircraft & 1500 HP Battle Tank Engine.

  • The agreement emphasizes on “Development through critical machining and inspection process of accessory components of SU-30MK1 Aircraft—Rotary Pipe Union & Cover respectively, valve train components of the 1500 HP Battle Tank Engine, and valve train components of Regular BEML Engines.”

Out of the total project cost of Rs. 14.2 crore, the TDB-DST has approved assistance of Rs. 5.5 crore to support this public-private initiative in the defence sector.
Key Points:
i.Through this project, GPP aims to set up a facility for the development and supply of critically machined accessory components of ‘SU-30MK1’ to Hindustan Aeronautic Ltd (HAL).
ii.The valve train components of 1500 HP 12V, 25 Litres capacity diesel engine of Armoured Fighting Vehicle (AFV) to be developed by Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE), Avadi, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
iii.The regular Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML) engine has been entrusted to BEML, an Indian Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

  • As a registered vendor with both HAL and BEML, GPP will take part in the import substitution process for some of the components through this project.

Government Initiatives in Defence Sector
i.The “SRIJAN” portal was developed by the MoD to support its flagship “Make in India” initiative and to encourage indigenization in the defence sector.

  • The portal has received a total of 19,509 defence products for indigenization that were previously imported.

ii.From 2018–19 to 2020–21, the import burden has decreased and expenditure on defence procurement from foreign sources have reduced from 46 % to 36 %.
iii.Furthermore, the value of production for both public and private sector defence companies have climbed from Rs 79,071 crore to Rs 84,643 crore.

Panchayati Raj ministry & IRMA signed MoU to work towards SDGspanchayati raj ministry, irma ink pact to work towards sdgsThe Ministry of Panchayati Raj (MoPR), and the Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA), Gujarat signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen Panchayati Raj institutions across India.
What is in the MoU?
i.The agreement will establish a framework under which MoPR and IRMA will collaborate in the area of Gram Panchayat Development Planning for Localization of Sustainable Development Goals (LSDGs) through Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs).
ii.Under the agreement both MoPR and IRMA will work together to find gaps and possible solutions to overcome gaps in the preparation of model Gram Panchayat Development Plan(GPDP) linkages with LSDGs.

  • It will also bring the nine themes of LSDGs to the grassroots by linking with GPDP.

iii.The IRMA will provide inputs to MoPR based on field experience gathered by their students/ interns as and when required for the policy interventions in LSDGs and other PRI related matters.

First Inter-Modal Digital TIR-Based Transport Flags off from India to IranFirst inter-modal digital TIR-based transport from India to Iran flagged off from Mumbai's JN portThe first inter-modal digital Transports Internationaux Routiers’ or International Road Transports (TIR)-based pilot transport along the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) corridor between India and Iran was flagged off from Nhava Shewa (Jawaharlal Nehru Port), Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra.

  • This aims to facilitate paperless cross-border transit under customs guarantee of TIR systems.

About TIR systems:
i.The TIR system plays an important role in facilitating cross-border trade and transport and prevents delay in operations by minimising the transportation costs and other formalities.
ii.According to the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), the system will simplify the movement of national and international transport by giving access to over 64 TIR operational countries.

  • This will also facilitate higher growth of intra-regional and inter-regional trade.

Key highlights:
i.The INSTC aims to reduce the time taken for EXIM (Export-Import) shipments to access the transit hub of Central Asian markets and reach Russia and Europe.
ii.The commercial transit hub for the Central Asia region will be the Chabahar Port, which was developed with Indian assistance.

  • India is participating in the development of the 1st phase of the Shahid Beheshti Terminal at Chabahar Port in collaboration with the Iranian government.

EKI lists India’s 1st plastic project under Global Accreditation Standard

Indore (Madhya Pradesh)-Based EKI Energy Services (EKI), a leading Carbon credit developer and supplier, listed a Plastic Project from India under a Global Accreditation Standard. EKI has become the first ever firm to list a plastic project from India with an aim to generate India’s first-ever international plastic credits.

  • The project has been listed under the Plastic Waste Reduction Standard of Verra, a Washington-(United States) based accreditation.
  • The project ensures to recycle Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) waste, PET flakes, and chips and produce a Recycled Polyester Staple Fibre (RPSF) for later use in the textile industry for manufacturing garments and other fabric-related utility products.
  • The company has listed this plastic project with an ambition to generate India’s First international plastic credits.

TN Government issued GO to establish Nanjarayan Tank as 17th Bird Sanctuary 

On 13th September 2022, the Government of Tamil Nadu issued a Government Order (GO) to start the 17th Bird Sanctuary at Nanjarayan tank, in Tiruppur district, Tamil Nadu.
Nanjarayan tank has been announced as the 17th bird sanctuary of Tamil Nadu on April 2022 and was allotted Rs 7.5 crore for its development.

  • Nanjarayan Tank locally called Sarkar Periyapalayam tank is spread over 125.86.5 hectares of land which lies at the junction of Tiruppur North and Uthukuli taluks.
  • The tank is home to more than 130 bird species and the government was taking a lead in conservation efforts with more sanctuaries being notified.
  • The tank has been visited by migratory bird species. Bar-headed goose, ruddy shelduck, northern shoveler and many other species native to Central Asia are expected to arrive at the tank by October 2022.
  • The GO was issued by the Department of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change and declared the Nanjarayan tank as the 17th bird sanctuary under the Wild Life (Protection) Act. Nanjarayan tank is named as Nanjarayan Bird Sanctuary under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972

SBI Joins 5-trillion Market Cap Membership; Stock Surges 26% in 3 MonthsSBI joins Rs 5-trillion market cap club

State Bank of India (SBI) has joined the Rs 5.03 trillion market capitalization (market cap) for the first time after its shares reached a record high of Rs 564.45 on the BSE index.

  • According to the data from BSE Limited, SBI stood at the 7th position in the overall market cap ranking, with a market cap of Rs 5.03 trillion.

Key highlights:
i.SBI has become the 3rd lender in India to cross the market cap of Rs 5 trillion.

  • HDFC Bank, India’s largest private lender holds 1st  position with a market cap of Rs 8.38 trillion and ICICI Bank holds the 2nd position with a market cap of Rs 6.33 trillion.

ii.In the past 3 months, SBI has outperformed the market by surging 26 percent, as against 13.9 per cent rise in the BSE Sensex.

MoF Establishes a Six-Member Committee to Boost Investments in Venture Capital/Private EquityCentre sets up panel under the Chairmanship of former SEBI Chairman M Damodaran to scale up PE-VC flows

The Ministry of Finance (MoF) has constituted a six-member expert committee chaired by M. Damodaran, former Chairman of Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), in order to suggest measures to boost Venture Capital and Private Equity (VC/PE) investments.
Background
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed the formation of an expert committee to examine and recommend relevant policy measures related to VC/PE investments in the Budget 2022–2023.
Other Members of the Expert Committee:

  • G Mahalingam, former Wholetime Member of SEBI and Executive Director of Reserve Bank of India (RBI)
  • D P Nagendra Kumar, former Member, Goods and Services Tax (GST), Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC)

Terms of Reference of the Committee 
i.To facilitate the process of investing and to promote investment in India
ii.To review issues and regulations, and to offer suggestions to speed up the expansion of alternative capital participation in the VC/PE sector.
iii.To suggest strategies to increase investment in startups and sunrise sectors.
iv.To suggest future-proof policies and proactive regulatory practices.
Note: In 2021, VC/PE had invested more than Rs 5.5 lakh crore, enhancing one of the greatest start-up and growth ecosystems in India.

ICICI Lombard Introduces Digital Voice Agent to Track Claim Status

ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company Limited (ICICI Lombard), one of India’s major private non-life insurance firms, has partnered with Skit.ai, an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based Software as a Service (SaaS) voice automation platform, to launch an AI-powered Digital Voice Agent.

  • With this partnership, ICICI Lombard will be able to help consumers seeking the status of their health and motor insurance claims using an AI-powered Digital Voice Agent.

Key Points:  
i.The Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems of ICICI Lombard will be integrated with the Skit.ai Augmented Voice Intelligence Platform to enhance interaction speed, accuracy, and convenience.
ii.The Digital Voice Agent will automate client interactions through intuitive, human-feeling conversation, reduce the average call handling time, and improve call containment rates.

G20 GDP Growth – Q2 2022 OECD Report: India’s GDP Growth Contracted by 1.4% India June quarter GDP growth second worst among G20 nations

According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) report “G20 GDP Growth-Second Quarter of 2022”, India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) among G20 nations contracted by 1.4% (-1.4%) quarter on quarter in the second quarter Q2 (June – August) of 2022 when adjusted for seasonality.

  • In addition, it was the second-worst performance among the G20 (Group of Twenty) nations, after only China (-2.6%).
  • The G20 GDP contracted by 0.4%(-0.4%) quarter on quarter in the Q2 of 2022.
  • India’s GDP also contracted by 1.4%(-1.4%) in the Q1 (March-May) of 2022.

Key Statistics:
i.The highest growth rates in the quarter were in Saudi Arabia (2.2%) and Turkiye (2.1%).
ii.Despite the sharp decrease in the G20’s overall GDP growth rate, Australia, Brazil, Italy, Japan, Korea, and Turkey had better growth in Q2 2022 than in the previous quarter.
iii.In two G20 countries, Mexico and South Africa, GDP was lower in the Q2 of 2022 than it was in the Q4 of 2019, the pre-pandemic levels.
iv.Between Q4 2019 and Q2 2022, Germany did not record any cumulative growth.

  • MASSIV stands for Make and Scale Social Impact Vision.

Key highlights:
i.The main aim of the program is to support impact tech companies on their impact measurement and management and connect them to the UN network and initiatives.
ii.With this initiative, Mastercard and UNDP will focus on sustainability, financial inclusion, and social impact focused companies which will play a key role in attaining 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

The UNDP representative Stine Kirstein Junge, Private Sector Advisor at UNDP Nordic Office has been added to the official Lighthouse MASSIV Advisory Board to increase the impact measurement throughout the program.

  • Other representatives on the board are from Swedbank, Danske Bank, VNTRS, and Nordic Impact Funds.

i.After this partnership, the startups that are participating will benefit with high quality impact measurement and management advisory support.

About Mastercard Lighthouse MASSIV:
Mastercard Lighthouse MASSIV program, which was launched in 2019, has featured many companies that focused on solving complex global challenges, including climate change, poverty, and social and economic exclusion.

  • The program mainly focuses on the Nordic and Baltic regions, from where 27 impact tech companies in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Estonia were benefitted.

About General Manoj Pande:
i.General Manoj Pande, 1st officer from the Corps of Engineers to become the 29th Chief of Army Staff (COAS) with the effect from April 2022.
ii.He was commissioned to the Corps of Engineers (The Bombay Sappers) in 1982.
iii. He is the recipient of the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal and he has been awarded the COAS Commendation card and 2 General Officer Commanding (GOC)-in-C Commendation card.
About the Honorary General of the Nepali Army:
i.The practice of decorating army chiefs of each other’s country with the honorary title has been followed as an old tradition for 70 years.
ii.The 1st Indian Army Chief to be decorated with this title was KM Cariappa, Commander-in-Chief General in 1950.
iii.In 2021, Chief of Nepali Army, General Prabhu Ram Sharma has conferred with Honorary General of the Indian Army by the former Indian President Ram Nath Kovind.

He succeeded Dinesh Tyagi.

  • The decision to this effect was taken at the 52nd board meeting of CSC held at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), chaired by Alkesh Kumar Sharma (Meity Secretary).

About Sanjay Kumar Rakesh:
i.He is a 1990 batch IAS officer of Tripura cadre and has around 30 years of experience in serving the government in various capacities.

  • Before joining CSC, he was the additional chief secretary in Tripura.

ii.He took over as the CEO of CSC SPV in November 2020 after taking a voluntary retirement from IAS.
iii.He also served as joint secretary at the  MeitY where he led several initiatives for ‘Make in India’ in the electronics sector.

  • He has also served under the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) and worked for the ‘Indira Awas Yojana’ and ‘Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana’.

BharatPe Appoints Two new Independent Directors

BharatPe appointed BP Kanungo, former Deputy Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Kaushik Dutta, current Chairman and Independent Director at Zomato as independent directors to its Board.
These appointments are in line with BharatPe’s aim to build a world-class institution.

  • The board of directors of BharatPe now includes two executive directors, Shashvat Nakrani (founder) and Suhail Sameer (CEO); five non-executive directors, Rajnish Kumar (former Chairman of State Bank of India) and four investor nominees; and two independent directors.
  • B P Kanungo served as the Deputy Governor of the RBI from 2017 to 2021. Kaushik Dutta also worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).

Google Acquires Mandiant for USD 5.4 billion to Strengthen CybersecurityGoogle completes $5.4 bn acquisition of cyber security firm MandiantThomas Kurian, the Chief Executive Officer(CEO) of Google Cloud has announced the USD 5.4 billion acquisition of Mandiant, Inc., the California-based cybersecurity company by Google LLC (limited liability company) to help organisations improve their threat, incident and exposure management.

  • Mandiant, a recognized leader in dynamic cyber defence, is to join Google Cloud to assist businesses in improving their threat, incident, and exposure management, and retain the Mandiant brand.

Note: Mandiant is known for pulling out the Tulsa-based company, SolarWinds hack from (malware) a supply chain attack by Russian hackers, which shook the world.
Key Highlights:
i.Mandiant is widely acknowledged by several big companies and had recognized Mandiant Cyber Threat Defense Solutions as the market leader in threat intelligence and expertise in cyber security.
ii.Google Cloud will continue to hold the Mandiant brand and continue Mandiant’s mission to make every organisation secure from cyber threats and confident in its readiness.
iii. The acquisition creates incredible value for Google’s customers and the security industry at large.
iv.The addition of Mandiant to Google Cloud Threat Intelligence will give security practitioners deeper visibility and expertise from the frontlines.

Sri Lanka win Asia Cup for 6th time, defeat Pakistan by 23 runsi.The 15th Edition of DP World T20 Asia Cup 2022 tournament with cricket format of Twenty20 International (T20I) was held between August 27 – September 11, 2022 in United Arab Emirates (UAE). It was held at two venues of UAE viz. Dubai International Cricket Stadium (Dubai), and Sharjah Cricket Stadium (Sharjah).
ii.The Championship title was grabbed by Sri Lanka by beating Pakistan in the finals with 23 runs. It was its 6th Asia Cup title, and 1st in T20I format.
iii.This tournament was originally scheduled in September 2020 but was postponed amid COVId-19 pandemic.
iv.The next edition i.e. 16th will be hosted by Pakistan in 2023.
v.Virat Kohli becomes the first Indian to play 100 matches in all three formats.
vi.Sri Lanka defeated India by six wickets in their Asia Cup 2022 Super 4 stage match. This was India’s first defeat against Sri Lanka in T20 Asia Cup history.  This resulted in the disqualification of India in the Super 4 stage.

i.India is the most successful team of Asia Cup with seven titles (six ODI and one T20I).

  • India won the last edition (14th) of Asia Cup in 2018 in ODI format.

ii.Sri Lanka has played the most Asia Cups (14) followed by India, Pakistan and Bangladesh who have played 13 each.
iii.Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya made the most runs in the Asia Cup (1220).
iv.Sri Lanks’s Muttiah Muralitharan is the most wicket taker of Asia Cup (30).
v.Asia’s Cup’s first edition was also held in Sharjah, UAE in 1984, and it was won by India.
vi.Rohit Sharma is first Indian to feature in seven series of the tournament as he is featuring in all Asia Cup editions since 2008.

Iconic French New Wave Filmmaker, Jean-Luc Godard passes away

On 13th September 2022, Jean-Luc Godard, an Influential critic and Filmmaker passed away at the age of 91, in the Swiss town of Rolle, on Lake Geneva, Switzerland.He was born in Paris, France.

  • Jean-Luc Godard is recognised as one of the most influential directors in the history of cinema. He revolutionized popular cinema in 1960 with his 1st feature film “Breathless”.
  • His films have won several awards like the Golden Lion, Golden Bear, Honorary Academy Award and Honorary César.
  • Awards and Honours of Jean-Luc Godard: Academy Award (2011), Praemium Imperiale (2002), an Honorary Academy Award (2010), an Honorary César (1987 and 1998), Golden Lion (1983), Golden Bear (1965).

Note: The New Wave (in French, La Nouvelle Vague) is a film movement that made an appearance in the late 1950s in Paris, France.

Hindi Diwas (Hindi Day) is annually observed across India on 14 September to mark the importance of the Hindi language.

  • The first Hindi day was celebrated on 14th September 1953.
  • It is celebrated in schools, colleges as well as offices in India.

The day aims to raise awareness about the Hindi language and also commemorate the event when it was adopted as one of the official languages of India.
Note: World Hindi Day is annually observed on 10th January across the globe.
Background:
i.India’s first Prime Minister (PM), Jawaharlal Nehru decided to celebrate September 14 as ‘Hindi Diwas’. Hindi was adopted as the official language of the Union of India on the 14th of September 1949. Subsequently, Hindi in the Devanagari script was declared as one of the official languages of India along with the English language.
ii.The states of India identify their own official languages through the process of legislation.
iii.Indian parliament passed the Official Languages Act in 1963. It allowed the usage of English along with Hindi, even after 1965.
