PM lays Foundation Stone and Dedicates 11 projects worth Rs. 75,000cr in MaharashtraPM lays foundation stone and dedicates to the nation projects worth Rs. 75,000 crores in Maharashtrai.On December 11, 2022, the Prime Minister (PM) of India, Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone and dedicated to the nation 11 projects worth more than 75,000 crores in Maharashtra.
ii.PM inaugurated Phase – I of Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg in Nagpur connecting Nagpur and Shirdi covering a distance of 520 Kms. Its outlay is about Rs 55,000 crore.
iii.The PM dedicated to the nation, AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Science) Nagpur, a 150 acre campus which is being developed at a cost of more than Rs 1575 crore under the under the Central Sector Scheme (CSS) Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).

PM Inaugurates First Phase of Greenfield International Airport in Mopa, GoaPM inaugurates greenfield International Airport in Mopa, GoaPrime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi has inaugurated the first phase of the Greenfield International Airport in Mopa, North Goa, which was built at a cost of about Rs. 2,870 crore. The foundation stone for the airport was laid by the PM in November 2016.

  • It is Goa’s second international airport, besides the existing airport at Dabolim, Goa.

As an honor to the late Goa Chief Minister (CM) Manohar Parrikar, the airport will be named as the ‘Manohar International Airport’.
During his visit to Goa, PM Narendra Modi addressed the valedictory ceremony of the 9th World Ayurveda Congress (WAC). The theme of the 9th WAC & Arogya Expo was “Ayurveda for One Health.”

World Bank Report: Women Are the Primary Users of Public Transportation in IndiaWomen biggest users of public transport in IndiaAccording to the “Toolkit on Enabling Gender Responsive Urban Mobility and Public Spaces in India,” released by the World Bank (WB), women are among the most frequent users of public transportation in India, accounting for 84% of all women journeys.
i.The absence of an inclusive design, in addition to affordability and a lack of safety, has an impact on women’s presence in public areas and labour force participation in India, which was 22.8 % in 2019–2020).

  • India has one of the lowest female labour force participation rates in the world, at 26.2% in 2020-21.

ii.The WB toolkit for Indian cities proposes including a gender perspective into new and existing transportation policies and strategies.
iii.It is based on the practical experience of planning and implementing gender-responsive urban transportation initiatives in Chennai (Tamil Nadu) as part of the World Bank-supported Chennai City Partnership project.

Navies of India & Indonesia Take Part in the 39th Edition of IND-INDO CORPAT  The 39th edition of India-Indonesia Coordinated Patrol (IND-INDO CORPAT) between the Indian Navy and the Indonesian Navy is being conducted between 8th December and 19th December 2022.

  • The CORPAT will be executed along the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) from 15th December 2022 to 16th December 2022.
  • The CORPAT will conclude with a debrief at Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Participation:
Indian Naval Ship (INS) Karmuk, an indigenously built Missile Corvette along with L-58 (indigenously built Landing CrL-58aft Utility vessel) and Dornier Maritime Patrol Aircraft will be participating in the Coordinated Patrol (CORPAT).
Note – The Indian Navy is engaging with various countries in the IOR to enhance regional maritime security, as a part of India’s vision SAGAR (Security And Growth for All in the Region).
About the exercise:
i.The IND-INDO CORPAT between India and Indonesia has been carried out twice a year since 2002, with an aim of keeping the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) safe and secure for commercial shipping, international trade and also to conduct legitimate maritime activities.
ii.The exercise helps in enhancing understanding and interoperability between the two navies in facilitating measures to prevent Illegal Unreported Unregulated (IUU) fishing, drug trafficking, maritime terrorism, armed robbery and piracy.
iii.It also helps in enhancing operational synergy between two navies by the exchange of information for the prevention of smuggling, illegal immigration and for the conduct of Search and Rescue (SAR) operations at sea.
Note – The 38th edition of IND-INDO CORPAT took place between 13th June and 24th June 2022 at Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands

HDFC Bank Partners with Startup India to Launch Sixth Parivartan SmartUp Grants

HDFC Bank in partnership with the Government of India (GoI)’s flagship initiative ‘Startup India’,  launched the 6th ‘Parivartan SmartUp Grants’, the annual grants program for social startups.

  • This program aims to identify startups that are working towards social impact and to support them through monetary grants to their incubators.
  • The grants have been offered under the aegis of Parivartan, the umbrella name for the HDFC Bank’s social initiatives.

About the program:
i.The bank has been enabling startups through its state-of-the-art SmartUp program, by providing specialised banking and value-added services to entrepreneurs.
ii.The Bank is offering grants under the aegis of Parivartan, the umbrella name for the HDFC bank’s social initiatives.

  • Until now, the HDFC bank has disbursed over Rs. 30 crore to more than 45 incubators which supported around 165 startups working in the areas of environment, agri-business, ed-tech, waste management, healthcare, and skill development sectors.

iii.In 2022, the HDFC bank will also focus on building capacities of incubators and startups working in tier-II and III cities.

  • It will fund social impact startups developing solutions in the field of environmental conservation, affordable healthcare, sustainable rural economy, technologies for better governance, economic growth of Small, Medium Enterprises (SMEs), gender diversity and inclusion space.

Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu took oath as the 15th CM of Himachal PradeshOn December 11, 2022, former Congress state Chief Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu took oath as the 15th Chief Minister(CM) of Himachal Pradesh (HP) at a ceremony held in Shimla, HP while Mukesh Agnihotri took oath as the Deputy CM of the state.

  • Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu will succeed CM Jai Ram Thakur.

Key Points:
i.He is the 4-time incumbent MLA(Member of the Legislative Assembly) of Nadaun assembly constituency of Himachal Pradesh.
ii.He is the first Congress CM in Himachal from the lower part of the state that comprises Kangra, Bilaspur, Una and Hamirpur districts.
iii.He became the president of the state Youth Congress in 1998, till 2008 and was the longest-serving president.
iv.Notably, during elections, Congress won 40 seats in the 68-member Himachal Pradesh State Assembly.

Bhupendra Patel Takes Oath for 2nd Consecutive Time as CM of GujaratBharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member Bhupendra Patel was sworn in by Governor Acharya Devvrat as the 17th Chief Minister (CM) of Gujarat during a ceremony held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

  • In the recently completed Gujarat Assembly Election 2022, Patel won the Ghatlodia seat with the largest margin of 1.92 lakh votes.

He will serve as the CM of Gujarat for the second year in a row.

  • He was sworn in as CM for the first time on September 13, 2021, replacing the Vijay Rupani-led state government.

Key Points:
i.The ruling BJP won a record 7th term in the recently concluded Gujarat Assembly Election 2022, garnering 156 of the total 182 legislative assembly seats.

  • The Congress won 17 constituencies, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won 5.

ii.Sixteen other ministers, including eight cabinet rank, were also sworn in.Gujarat State council of ministers can have 27 ministers, including the chief minister.
iii.Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah were among the significant BJP leaders who were present during the oath-taking ceremony.

  • She also became the First Olympian and First International Medallist to head the IOA in its 95-year-old history.

Prasar Bharati ADG Sunil Elected Vice President of Asia Pacific Broadcasting UnionPrasar Bharati Additional Director General (ADG) Sunil has been unanimously elected as the Vice President of the Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) for a three-year term.
Key points:
i.The ABU is a non-profit, professional association of broadcasters from Asia and Pacific regions.  Prasar Bharati hosted the 59th ABU General Assembly and Associated Meetings in November 2022 in New Delhi.
ii.It was attended by over 400 representatives of broadcasting organisations from more than 57 countries.

  • He is the President (Elect) of Broadcast Engineering Society India since April 2021.

ii.He graduated in Engineering with a Masters in Management and has experience for over 33 years in broadcasting. He also has good experience in the installation of Broadcasting Projects in India and overseas.

Ruling Nepali Congress Party Wins Most Seats; Sher Bahadur Deuba to Remain as PM

The ruling Nepali Congress party has emerged as Nepal’s single largest party after winning 89 seats in the 275-member parliament in a general election held in November 2022.

  • Nepali Congress party leader Sher Bahadur Deuba, is likely to remain as Prime minister (PM) for the sixth term.

About elections:
i.A five-party alliance led by the Nepali congress has won 136 seats, just two short of 138 seats required for a majority to form Government.
ii.The Nepal Communist Unified Marxist Leninist Party (UML), led by K P Sharma Oli, led by the ruling party’s main rival, has won 92 seats.

  • The 2022 elections witnessed a new wave of youngsters challenging the old guard of Nepali politics.

Highlights:
i.Nepal’s lower house has a total of 275 members, out of which 165 are directly elected and the remaining 110 are chosen by the political parties, with seats allocated in proportion to the votes they get.
ii.Nepal has had 10 different governments since 2008, after abolishing Monarchy. Since then the Nepali Congress, UML and the Maoist Centre have emerged as ruling parties but none has served a full five-year term due to power struggles.     

ACQUISITIONS & MERGERS   

Dalmia Cement to acquire cement assets of Jaypee Group for Rs 5,666 crore 

Jaypee Group have signed a binding agreement to sell its cement business to Dalmia Cement Bharat Limited (DCBL) ,wholly owned subsidiary of Dalmia Bharat Limitedat an enterprise value of Rs.5666 crore. The divestment includes cement plants with an aggregate capacity of 9.4 million tonne(MnT), clinker assets with a capacity of 6.7 million tonne and 280 MW capacity thermal power plant.

  • The agreement was signed by Jaiprakash Associates Ltd (JAL) and Jaiprakash Power Ventures.
  • This is the second asset sale deal clinched by debt-laden Jaiprakash Associates with the Dalmia Group.
  • Between 2014 and 2017, Jaiprakash Associates divested cement assets of more than 20 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) capacity to UltraTech Cement.

SpaceX Launches Private Mission to Moon; NASA’s Orion Completes first flight around MoonSpaceX launches private mission to moon with Japanese lander, UAE's rover

On 11th December 2022 ,Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) launched a mission to carry a Japanese lander named ‘HAKUTO’ , the United Arab Emirates (UAE)’s Rover named ‘Rashid’ ,and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Lunar Flashlight by its Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida,United States.

  • The HAKUTO lander, which translates to white rabbit, is also the part of the Mission 1 by the Japanese lunar exploration company ispace. A second lunar landing by the private company ispace is planned for 2024 and a third in 2025.
  • The Rashid Rover, a first Arab-built lunar spacecraft was built by Dubai’s Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC), in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and is being delivered by the HAKUTO-R lander, engineered by Japanese lunar exploration company ispace.

NASA’s Orion Completes First Flight Around Moon, Returns to Earth
NASA’s unmanned Orion spacecraft completed its first mission of the Artemis lunar programme on 11th December 2022, travelling around the moon and back 50 years to the day after the last Apollo moon landing.

Indian Olympian & Arjuna Awardee Kenneth Powell Passed awayOn 11th December 2022, Kenneth Powell, Olympian and India’s 1970 Asian Games 4x100m relay bronze-winning team member passed away at the age of 82 in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
About Kenneth Powell: 
i. Powell was born on April 20, 1940, in Kolar, Karnataka. He was one of the top sprinters in India in the 1960s.
ii. After missing out on the 1962 Asian Games, he played a key role in the Indian 4x100m relay team reaching the semifinals of the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

  • He also competed for India in the 100m and 200m sprint events at the 1964 Olympic Games.
  • He was also a member of the team that won bronze at the 1970 Asian Games in Bangkok.

iii. Accordingly, after being excluded from the Asian Games in Bangkok in 1966, he remained motivated and helped India win the 4x100m relay bronze in Bangkok, Thailand, in 1970.
iv. Kenny Powell has won 19 National Open Championships and National Inter-State Championships sprint titles.
Awards:
i. Kenneth Powell was awarded the Victor Ludorum 2 years in a row for his athletic abilities.
ii. He received the Arjuna Award from the Government of India in 1965, Powell became the first sportsperson from Karnataka to win the Arjuna Award
iii.He had also won silver in 100m at the 1981 Asian Masters Athletics meet in Singapore under the 40-44 age group.

International Mountain Day 2022 – December 11International Mountain Day - December 11 2022United Nations (UN)’s International Mountain Day is annually observed across the globe on December 11 to create awareness about the importance of mountains to life.
The theme of International Mountain Day 2022 is ‘Women move mountains’.

  • On 16 December 2021, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed 2022 as the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development (IYM2022) at the proposal of the Kyrgyz Government

i. The idea of International Mountain Days began in 1992, with the adoption of Chapter 13 of Agenda 21 titled “Managing Fragile Ecosystems: Sustainable Mountain Development” at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development.
ii. The UNGA has declared the year 2002 as the “International Year of Mountains” and adopted the resolution A/RES/57/245 and declared December 11 as International Mountain Day.
iii. The 1st ever International Mountain Day was observed on 11 December 2003.

UNICEF Day 2022 – December 11UNICEF day - December 11 2022The United Nations Children’s Fund(UNICEF) day is annually observed across the globe on 11th December to mark the creation of UNICEF by United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) on 11th December 1946.

  • 2022 marks the 75th anniversary of the foundation of UNICEF.

Background:
i.The UNGA adopted resolution 57(I) on 11th December 1946 creating UNICEF to provide supplies and assistance to children after World War II.
ii.UNICEF originally known as the “United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund” was started as a temporary relief fund of the United Nations(UN).
iii.Later, The mandate of UNICEF was broadened to address the long-term needs of children and women in developing countries.
iv.UNICEF became a permanent part of the UN system in 1953, and was renamed as United Nations Children’s Fund but retained its acronym “UNICEF”.

International Universal Health Coverage Day 2022 – December 12 Universal Health Coverage Day - December 12 2022The United Nations (UN)’s International Universal Health Coverage Day is annually observed across the globe on 12th December to create awareness about the need for strong and resilient health systems and universal health coverage with multi-stakeholder partners.

  • The theme of International UHC Day is “Build the world we want: A healthy future for all”.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic with the increased inequities and financial hardship, The goal of universal health coverage (UHC) became more urgent.
Background:
i.The Universal Health Coverage Day was first organised on 12th December 2014 by the Universal Health Coverage Coalition.
ii.On 12th December 2017, The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/72/138 and proclaimed the 12th December of every year as “International Universal Health Coverage Day (UHC Day) “.
iii.The first ever UN’s International UHC Day was observed on 12th December 2018.

Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) was awarded the 1st Prize under the Ayushman Bharat Health Account(ABHA) ID generation category and 2nd Prize under the Teleconsultation category during a two-day conclave of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) at Rudraksh Convention Centre, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh(UP) held on 10th & 11th December 2022.

  • The conclave was organised as a part of the observance of International Universal Health Coverage Day.

NIIFL Signs MoU with Tamil Nadu Govt for Infra ProjectsOn 12th December 2022, the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund Limited (NIIFL) announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu Infrastructure Development Board (TNIDB) to help attract commercial capital into infrastructure opportunities in Tamil Nadu, under the public-private project (PPP) model.
Key Points:
i. Currently, 7 projects across departments have been identified, with potential investments ranging from Rs 5,000 to 6,000 crore.

  • Work on these projects has already begun.

ii. The Strategic Initiatives and Policy Advisory (SIPA) team at NIIFL provide high-level strategic advice to entities in the Central and State Governments.
iii.
