Centre Approved Funds for Implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tripura

On the lines of the announcement made by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019 regarding Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) which aims to provide “Functional Household Tap Connection” (FHTC) to 18 Crore rural households of the country by the year 2024, the Centre has earlier approved funds for the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission for Odisha, Meghalaya, Assam & Bihar. Now extending this scheme further for other states, Centre has now approved funds to the following states for FY2020-2021:

Central Govt approved funding of Rs 1,829 Crore for implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission in Maharashtra

The Central Govt has approved funding of 1,829 crore rupees for the effective implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission in Maharashtra for 2020-21 on the basis of the Annual Action Plan (AAP) for 2020-21 presented by Maharashtra to the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation.

• Target – State has planned to provide 100% tap connections to all the households in the State by 2023-24.
• Maharashtra plans to provide tap connections to 31.30 lakh households in 2020-21. Out of 1.42 Crore rural households in Maharashtra, 53.11 lakh households have already got tap connections.
• The state has an unspent balance of Rs 285.35 crore. It adds that along with Central allocation and a matching state share, the total fund available will be Rs 3,908 crore. 
• Further, the 15th Commission has allocated grants worth Rs 5,827 crore that has to be compulsorily spent on supply of drinking water, rainwater harvesting and water recycling besides sanitation and maintenance of open defecation-free (ODF) status.

Central Govt has approved fund of Rs 1,189.40 Crore for implementation of JJM in Karnataka in 2020-21

Central Govt has approved a fund of Rs 1,189.40 Crore for implementation of JJM in Karnataka in 2020-21, which is a considerable increase from Rs. 546.06 Crore in 2019-20. Karnataka is planning 100% household coverage by 2022-23.

• For 2020-21, the State has planned to provide 23.57 lakh households with tap water connections. 
• With an opening balance of Rs. 80.44 Crore available with the State and along with this year’s allocation of Rs. 1,189.40 Crore, and considering the State matching share, a total of Rs. 2,734.03 Crore will be available for implementation of JJM in Karnataka.
• The State received Rs 3,217 Crore as Finance Commission Grants in 2020-21. 

Central Govt allocated Rs 156.61 Crore for FY20-21 to Tripura for implementation of JJM in State

For the year 2020-21, the fund allocation for the implementation of JJM in Tripura has been increased from Rs 107.64 Crore to Rs 156.61 Crore. With an opening balance of Rs 136.45 Crore available with the State and along with this year’s allocation of Rs 156.61 Crore, and considering the State matching share, a total of Rs 320.16 Crore will be available with the state.

• State has planned to provide 100% Functional Household Tap Connection by 2023 under JJM.
• In 2020-21, Tripura has been allocated Rs 191 Crore as 15th Finance Commission Grants to PRIs and 50% of this amount is mandatorily to be utilized for water supply & sanitation. Funds provided under Swachh Bharat Mission (G) is to be utilized for grey water treatment and reuse works.

About JJM:

It aims to enable every rural household has assured availability of potable water at a service level of 55 litres per capita per day (lpcd) on regular and long-term basis. As a mission target, all states are presenting their implementation plans to the National level Committee headed by Secretary, Department of Drinking Water & Sanitation, Govt. of India for approval.

• The estimated outlay of the mission is Rs 3.60 Lakh Crore with Central and State share of Rs. 2.08 Lakh Crore and Rs.1.52 Lakh Crore respectively.
