Centre approves Rs 812 crore for implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission in Odisha
Centre has approved a higher allocation of Rs 812 crore for implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission in Odisha during 2020-21 in comparison to the Rs 297 crore in FY19-20. The government of Odisha is planning to provide over 16 lakh household connections in 2020-21 with a target of 100% household tap connections by the year 2024.
- Priority is being given for 100% coverage of villages under water-scarce areas, quality-affected areas, Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojna villages, villages in Aspirational Districts and SC/ST dominated habitations.
- Odisha was allocated Rs 2,258 crore under the 15th Finance Commission Grants to Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) during 2020-21. 50% of the amount has to be mandatorily spent on water and sanitation.
Centre approves Rs 175 crore for implementation of JJM in Meghalaya
Centre has approved 175 crore rupees for implementation of JJM in Meghalaya during 2020-21. The allocation has been made on the basis of the Annual Action Plan presented by Meghalaya to National JJM, Ministry of Jal Shakti under which the state has proposed 100% tap connections to all the households by December, 2022.
- In FY20-21, out of 5.89 lakh total rural households, the State will provide 1.80 lakh tap connections.
- The State has been allocated Rs. 182 Crore under 15th Finance Commission Grants to PRIs during 2020-21; 50% of this amount has to be mandatorily to be spent on water and sanitation.
Notably, Meghalaya is blessed with more than average rainfall and has abundant natural water resources. However, due to detrimental human interference, the water levels are depleted.
Centre approves Rs 1,407 crore for implementation of Jal jeevan mission in Assam during 2020-21
Centre has approved Rs 1,407 crore for implementation of JJM in Assam during the year 2020-21. Assam has planned to provide functional tap connections to 13 lakh rural households in 2020-21, out of total 63 lakh households.
- The state also planned to immediately provide household tap connections to all remaining households belonging to weaker and marginalised sections on a priority basis.
Centre allocates over Rs 1,832.66 cr for implementation of JJM in Bihar
Centre has allocated Rs. 1832.66 crore for implementation of JJM in Bihar during 2020-21. Bihar is planning to provide tap connections to the remaining 1 crore 50 lakh households in 2020-21 therefore the state will have 100% coverage of all households with functional tap water connections by 2020-21.
Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) has been launched in partnership with States, to enable every household in villages to have a FHTC within the premises by 2024.
Arunachal Pradesh plans to provide tap connection to all rural households by March 2023
Govt of India approved Rs 255 Crore for the State under Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in 2020-21. The State proposed to provide 100% tap connections to all the households by March, 2023. Out of 2.18 lakh total rural households, the State is planning to provide 77,000 tap connections in 2020-21.
- The State has been allocated Rs. 231 Crore under 15th Finance Commission Grants to PRIs during 2020-21.
- Being implemented in partnership with States, the Mission aims to enable every rural household has assured availability of potable water at a service level of 55 litres per capita per day (lpcd) on regular and long-term basis so as to bring improvements in lives of rural folks.
Puducherry plans to provide tap connections to all rural households in 2020-21
National Jal Jeevan Mission has approved the Annual Action Plan of Puducherry for FY2020-2021 under which household tap connections will be provided to remaining households.
- The UT has been advised to focus on 24*7 service delivery in rural areas, so that the villages can act as ‘utilities’ with focus on ‘service delivery’.It’s also planned to conduct Internet of Things (IoT) based sensor monitoring for water supply in villages.
It should be noted that all the above states are giving emphasis on the “low-hanging fruits” i.e. in the villages/ habitations where piped water supply schemes already exist, so that remaining households could be provided with tap connections easily in very less time.

It aims to enable every rural household has assured availability of potable water at a service level of 55 litres per capita per day (lpcd) on regular and long-term basis. As a mission target, all states are presenting their implementation plans to the National level Committee headed by Secretary, Department of Drinking Water & Sanitation, Govt. of India for approval.
- The estimated outlay of the mission is Rs 3.60 Lakh Crore with Central and State share of Rs. 2.08 Lakh Crore and Rs.1.52 Lakh Crore respectively.
