Union Minister Jyotiraditya M.Scindia Launches Rs 175 crore Mission ‘Coffee of Nagaland’
In May 2026, Union Minister Jyotiraditya M.Scindia, Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), virtually launched the Rs 175 crore ‘Coffee of Nagaland’ mission, at Sanchar Bhavan, New Delhi(Delhi), to promote coffee cultivation, strengthen farmers’ livelihoods, and position Nagaland as a premium coffee-producing state in India.
About Coffee of Nagaland Mission:
Focus: The initiative focuses on plantation development, processing, branding, marketing, export promotion, capacity building, and coffee tourism through farm stays and farm-to-cup experiences.
Approach: The mission adopts a cluster-based approach with two pilot coffee clusters identified in the state:
- Tuophema village in Kohima district for Arabica coffee and
- Ghotovi village in Niuland district for Robusta coffee.
Pilot Project: During the event, Union Minister Jyotiraditya M.Scindia also launched the Rs 49.48 crore pilot project ‘Cluster-Based Coffee Value Chain Development in Nagaland’ to create an end-to-end coffee value chain from cultivation to marketing and enhance farmers’ returns from premium-quality coffee.
NIOS Launches Initiative to Reconnect Out-of-School Children with Education Under NEP 2020
In May 2026, Sanjay Kumar, Secretary, Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL), under the Ministry of Education (MoE), held a high-level review meeting on out-of-school children, especially in the 14–18 age group, and discussed the implementation of a new initiative by the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS).
- The mission of the initiative is “To Reach the Unreached,” NIOS aims to reconnect out-of-school children with the formal education system. A transformative step towards advancing the goals of National Education Policy 2020 and the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
Key Challenges of the Initiative:
PLFS Data: It shows that out of every 100 children entering Class I, only 62 reach Class XII. According to the latest Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) estimates, over two crore children aged 14–18 currently out of school.
Mission Mode Strategy:
Phase I: It will be implemented in 10 pilot districts identified across Odisha, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Delhi, where a high number of out-of-school children have been found.
Union Minister Rajnath Singh Laid Foundation for AMCA Programme Facility in AP
In May 2026, Union Minister Rajnath Singh, Ministry of Defence (MoD), along with N. Chandrababu Naidu, Chief Minister (CM) of Andhra Pradesh (AP), laid foundation for around Rs 15,000 crore Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme facility at Puttaparthi in Sri Sathya Sai district, AP.
- He also laid the foundation stone for the Rs 2,000 crore Core Integration and Flight Testing Centre at Puttaparthi to fast-track the development of the 5th generation AMCA and other future indigenous platforms.
Key Details:
AMCA Programme : The new AMCA, India’s indigenous 5th-generation, twin-engine stealth multirole fighter programme, is designed specifically for the Indian Air Force (IAF) and Indian Navy (IN).
- The AMCA programme facility is being established by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
Naval Systems Manufacturing Unit: During the event, Union Minister Rajnath Singh also laid the foundation stone for Rs 480 crore Naval Systems Manufacturing Facility, led by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), at T Sirasapalli village in Anakapalli district, AP.
Other Key Launches: Defence Energetics Facility will be established by Agneyastra Energetics Limited, a subsidiary of Bharat Forge Limited (BFL), with an investment of Rs 1,500 crore.
- Ammunition and Electric Fuse Plant will be established by Himachal Futuristic Communications Limited (HFCL Limited), with an investment of around Rs 1,200 crore in Madakasira, AP.

USA Approves USD 428 Million Defence Packages for India’s AH-64E Apache Helicopters and M777 Howitzers
In May 2026, the United States Department of State, an executive department of the United States of America (USA), approved two Foreign Military Sales (FMS) sustainment packages worth USD 428.2 million for India.
- The approved packages include USD 198.2 million in support services for AH-64E Apache attack helicopters and USD 230 million for long-term sustainment support of M777A2 ultra-light howitzers.
About the Packages:
Package 1: The package includes sustainment services, contractor logistics support (CLS), engineering and technical assistance, logistics support, technical publications, personnel training, and programme support elements for the Indian Air Force (IAF) and Indian Army (IA)’s Army Aviation Corps (ACC) Apache fleet.
Contractors: Principal contractors for the package are Boeing Company, Arlington, Virginia, and Lockheed Martin Corporation, Bethesda, Maryland, USA.
Package 2: The package includes spare parts, repair-and-return services, depot capability, field service representatives (FSR), technical assistance, training, ancillary items, and programme support elements for long-term artillery maintenance.
Contractor: The principal contractor for the package is BAE Systems Inc.,(USA).

RBI Amends Directions on IFR for Various Bank Categories
In May 2026, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued final amendment directions revising the regulatory framework relating to Investment Fluctuation Reserve (IFR) applicable to various categories of banks and regulated entities.
Key Highlights
Investment Fluctuation Reserve (IFR): It is a reserve created by banks out of their profits to absorb losses from mark-to-market (MTM) valuation changes in investments, especially in government securities.
- It is an additional buffer that banks are required to maintain to protect themselves against depreciation in the value of their investment portfolios.
IFR Discontinuation: Under the revised norms, the requirement of IFR has been discontinued with effect from May 18, 2026.
Reason for discontinuation: The RBI removed the IFR requirement because the existing capital and risk management norms already provide adequate protection against investment risks.
RBI Imposes Regulatory Restrictions on Nagar Sahakari Bank, Caps Withdrawals at Rs 10,000
In May 2026, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed several regulatory restrictions on Etawah(Uttar Pradesh, UP)-based co-operative bank, Nagar Sahakari Bank Limited, due to deteriorating financial conditions and supervisory concerns.
- The directions were issued under the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, and will remain effective for a specified period, subject to review by the RBI.
Key Details:
Withdrawal Restriction: The restrictions include a withdrawal cap of Rs 10,000 per customer across all savings, current, and other deposit accounts for a period of six months due to supervisory concerns.
Key Directions: Without the written prior approval of RBI, the co-operative bank is not authorised to grant loans, accept fresh deposits, or borrow funds.
Relaxation in Expenditure: Despite such restrictions, the bank is allowed to incur expenditure in respect of certain essential items like: salaries of employees, rent, electricity bills.
Bank Status: RBI has also clarified that the restrictions imposed on the bank should not be construed as cancellation of the banking licence.
Deposit Claims: The eligible depositors will get deposit insurance claim amount of their deposits i.e. maximum Rs 5 lakh from the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC).
Viyona Fintech Secures NPCI Certification for UPI, IMPS & IBMB Payment Infrastructure

In May 2026, Google LLC and Blackstone Inc., the world’s largest alternative asset manager, announced a joint venture (JV) to establish an Artificial Intelligence (AI) cloud infrastructure company with Blackstone committing an initial USD 5 billion equity investment.
- Benjamin Treynor Sloss was appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the venture, which aims to provide Google Cloud’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) as compute-as-a-service with a target of 500 megawatts (MW) capacity online by 2027.

Features: The venture will provide AI data centre infrastructure, networking, operational services, and advanced AI model training and inference workloads, while Google supplies TPU hardware, software, and AI-related services.
Expansion: The venture aims to expand access to Google’s custom-built TPU chips and compete with Nvidia-backed firms such as CoreWeave, while Blackstone continues expanding global investments in AI infrastructure and data centres through investments in OpenAI, Anthropic, and CoreWeave.

Vadasseri Damodara Menon Satheesan Takes Oath as CM of Kerala
In May 2026, Vadasseri Damodara Menon Satheesan (V. D. Satheesan), represents the Paravur Assembly constituency in Kerala, was sworn in as the 13th Chief Minister (CM) of Kerala at Central Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), along with a 20-member cabinet, following the victory of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in the Kerala Assembly Elections 2026.

TVS Venu to Acquire Up to 9.9% Stake in Jana Small Finance Bank
In May 2026, TVS Venu Group announced its plan to acquire up to 9.9% stake in Jana Small Finance Bank (Jana SFB) through a combination of warrants and secondary share purchase on a fully diluted basis.
- The acquisition is expected to be completed within 3 months, subject to customary closing conditions.

Acquisition Process: As part of the transaction arrangement, 5.64% of stake worth Rs 317.5 crore (around USD 33 million) will be acquired through a primary issue of shares to GWC Family Fund Investments.
- TVS Motor Company will directly buy 51,60,903 equity shares, accounting for 4.9% of the paid-up share capital of Jana SFB for a total valuation of Rs 193.31 crore.
Approval: The company has received the Investment Committee approval for the execution of a share purchase agreement with Jana Holdings Limited for the acquisition.

Formation of WTISD: In November 2006, the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference held in Antalya(Turkey) decided to merge both observances into World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD), celebrated annually on 17 May.
World Hypertension Day 2026 – May 17
The World Health Organization (WHO) observes World Hypertension Day (WHD) every year on 17 May to raise awareness about hypertension (high Blood Pressure(bp)), and promote early detection, monitoring, and treatment to prevent related health complications.
