On August 28, 2025, the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), launched by the Prime Minister(PM) Narendra Modi in August 2014, marks 11 years of transformative impact in India’s financial landscape.

About Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY):

Empowerment: The world’s largest financial inclusion scheme, PMJDY is a National Mission for Financial Inclusion that seeks to provide every unbanked adult in India with a bank account, a financial identity, and access to essential services like credit, insurance, and pensions.

Ministry: The Nodal Ministry for the PMJDY is the Department of Financial Services(DFS), Ministry of Finance(MoF).

Slogan: The slogan of PMJDY is ‘Mera Khata – Bhagya Vidhata’.

Principles: The Core Principles of the PMJDY are

  • Banking the unbanked: Opening of Basic Savings Bank Deposit (BSBD) account with minimal paperwork, relaxed Know Your Customer(KYC), e-KYC, account opening in camp mode, zero balance and zero charges.
  • Securing the unsecured: Issuance of free Rupay Debit cards for cash withdrawals & payments at merchant locations, with free accident insurance coverage of Rs. 2 lakhs.
  • Funding the unfunded: Other financial products like micro-insurance, overdraft for consumption, micro-pension, overdraft facility up to Rs. 10,000 and micro-credit.

Pillar of JAM Trinity: It serves as the foundational component of India’s JAM (Jan Dhan–Aadhaar–Mobile) Trinity.

Benefits of PMJDY:

  • Small Account / Chota Khata: For individuals without formal legal documents, small accounts can be opened. These are valid for 12 months and may be extended by another 12 months if proof of application for an Officially Valid Document is submitted within the first year.
  • Business Correspondents (BCs) / Bank Mitras: BCs/Bank Mitras assist residents with savings, deposits, withdrawals, and mini-statements, ensuring last-mile delivery of banking services.
  • Eligibility for Additional Government Schemes: PMJDY accounts are eligible for Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), Atal Pension Yojana (APY), and Micro Units Development & Refinance Agency (MUDRA) scheme.

Key Milestone(As on 13th August 2025):

World Record: The scheme set a Guinness World Record by opening nearly 1.8 crore bank accounts in a single week during its launch phase.

Accounts: PMJDY accounts have grown from 14.72 crores (cr) in 2015 to over 56.16 cr by August 2025, with around 67% in rural/semi-urban areas and 33% were opened in urban/metro areas.

  • 56% PMJDY accounts belong to women, highlighting the scheme’s role in promoting gender equality in financial access.

Deposits : Total deposit balances under PMJDY accounts have reached Rs. 2,67,756 cr.

  • As on 13th August 2025, the average deposit per account is Rs. 4,768.
  • The average deposit per account has increased by 3.7 times compared to August 2015.

RuPay Cards: A total of 38.68 cr RuPay debit cards have been issued to PMJDY account holders, facilitating cashless transactions and providing access to the inbuilt accident insurance cover.

  • The total number of digital transactions rose from 2,338 cr in Financial Year 2018-19 (FY19) to 22,198 cr in FY25, supported by RuPay cards, PoS (Point of Sale) machines, and UPI (Unified Payment Interface).

Campaign for financial outreach:

Campaign: The Department of Finance (DoF), MoF, launched a three-month nationwide saturation campaign, effective from 1st July 2025 to 30th September 2025, to bolster the outreach of flagship schemes such as the PMJDY, PMJJBY, PMSBY, and APY.

  • In the first-month milestone, nearly 6.6 lakh new PMJDY accounts were opened. KYC details were re-verified for over 4.73 lakhs inactive PMJDY accounts and 5.65 lakhs other savings accounts.

On July 22, 2025, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) announced that 6 crore people had been screened for Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) under the National Sickle Cell Anemia Elimination Mission, moving closer to the target of 7 crore screenings.

  • Out of the 6 crore individuals, 2.15 lakh individuals are diagnosed with SCD, and 16.7 lakh have been identified as carriers.
