On February 11 2025, Berlin(Germany)-based International Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), Transparency International(TI) released its ‘2024 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI 2024)’ which evaluated the perceived levels of public sector corruption across 180 countries.
- According to the 2024 CPI Report, India ranks 96th out of 180 countries with a score of 38, marking a decline from its 2023 position, where India ranked 93rd with a score of 39.
- Denmark tops the 2024 CPI, for the 7th consecutive time with a score of 90, followed by Finland(88) and Singapore(84).
- India’s score and rank was shared by Gambia and Maldives.
About Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI):
i.The CPI, published annually assesses the perceived levels of public sector corruption in 180 countries, using a scale from 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean), with no country achieving a perfect score.
ii.The first report was released in 1995 and since then every year the report has been released by Transparency International.

Highlights of the Report:
i.The global average on the index has remained unchanged at 43, highlighting the need for urgent action against corruption and warning of a critical global obstacle to implementing successful climate action.
ii.The 2024 CPI highlights that about 85% of the world (about 6.8 billion people) live in countries with high corruption.
- The report highlights that over two-thirds of countries scored below 50, indicating challenges in combating corruption globally.
iii.7 countries have improved their corruption scores in the past five years: Côte d’Ivoire (score 45), the Dominican Republic (score 36), Kosovo (score 44), Kuwait (score 46), the Maldives (score 38), Moldova (score 43), and Zambia (score 39).
iv.Azerbaijan, which hosted the 2024 United Nation (UN) Climate Change Conference, ranked 154th and scored 22, showing it still struggles with corruption.
v.India’s neighbors faced challenges with corruption, as Pakistan ranked 135th (score 27), Sri Lanka ranked 121st (score 32), Bangladesh ranked even lower at 149th (score 23) and China was placed at 76th (score 43).
vi.Lowest Rank: South Sudan ranked 180th (score 8), Somalia at 179th (score 9),Venezuela at 178th (score 10) and Syria at 177th (score 12) are the most corrupt nations, ranking at the bottom.
