President appoints Chief justices to seven high courts

On October 3, 2019 the president of India Shri Ram NathKovind has appointed chief justices (CJ) for 7 High courts(HC). Out of the 7 CJs, 4 of them will fill the vacancies left by justices of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana, Rajasthan, and Kerala High Courts who were appointed to the Supreme court(SC) recently.

• The appointment has been made by exercising the powers conferred under clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India.

Key points

• The four Justices who were elevated to the Supreme court were V.Ramasubramanian, Krishna Murari, S. Ravindra Bhat, and Hrishikesh Roy, from Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana, Rajasthan, and Kerala High Courts, respectively.
• New Chief Justices: Justice Lingappa Narayana Swamy, who served as the Karnataka HC judge, is appointed as CJ of the Himachal Pradesh HC; Acting CJ of the Madhya Pradesh HC, Justice Ravi ShankerJha is appointed as CJ of the Punjab and Haryana HC; Bombay HC Justice IndrajitMohanty is appointed as the CJ of the Rajasthan HC;
• Gauhati HC Justice Arup K. Goswami is appointed as the CJ of Sikkim HC; Allahabad HC judge is appointed as the CJ of Gauhati HC; Madhya Pradesh HC judge J.K. Maheshwari is appointed as a justice of Andhra Pradesh HC; Justice S. Manikumar of the Madras High Court is appointed as CJ of Kerala HC.
