World Veterinary Day (WVD) is annually observed across the globe on the last Saturday of April to raise awareness about veterinarians and recognise and celebrate the contributions of veterinarians to the health of animals, welfare, people, and the environment
World Veterinary Day 2024 is observed on 27th April 2024.
- World Veterinary Day 2023 was observed on 29th April 2023.
- World Veterinary Day 2025 will be observed on 26th April 2025.
The annual observance of WVD is led by the World Veterinary Association (WVA), a federation of veterinary associations.
Theme:
The theme of World Veterinary Day 2024 is “Veterinarians are essential health workers“.
- The 2024 theme highlights veterinarians’ pivotal role in safeguarding animal health and contributing significantly to human well-being.
Background:
i.The Congress of Thessaloniki 1975 was attended by some 4000 participants. July 9 was proclaimed the first World Veterinarian’s Day.
ii.The World Veterinary Association (WVA) established the WVD in 2000 to be celebrated annually on the last Saturday of April.
iii.The first ever WVD by WVA was celebrated on 29th April 2000.
Note:WVD is celebrated annually with a topic chosen by the WVA Councillors.
The WVD Award 2024:
i.The WVD Award 2024 recognizes the efforts of a WVA Member Association in alignment with the 2024 theme.
ii.The World Veterinary Association and HealthforAnimals provide the award. The award is open to all WVA Member Associations.
The Award value of USD 5000 will be provided directly to the WVA, which may use it for activities, reward hard-working staff, provide scholarships, support their community, etc.
