World Milk Day is annually observed across the globe on 1st June to recognize milk as global food and to celebrate the dairy industry. The day aims to create awareness about the benefits of milk and dairy products highlighting the contribution of Dairy industries in providing livelihood to billions of people across the globe.
- The annual observance of World Milk Day is led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations(FAO).
The theme of World Milk Day 2022 highlights the work being done to accelerate climate action and help reduce the impact of the dairy industry on the planet.
- The World Milk Day offers a platform to create awareness of the messaging and actions towards Dairy Net-Zero.
Background:
i.World Milk Day was established by the FAO in 2001 to recognize the importance of milk as a global food.
ii.The first-ever World Milk Day was observed on 1st June 2001.
Why June 1?
June 1 was chosen for the observance of World Milk Day since several countries across the globe celebrate a national milk day on or around June 1.
Enjoy Dairy Rally May 29 – May 31
i.As a part of the observance of the World Dairy Day 2022, the Enjoy Dairy Rally was organised from 29th May to 31st May 2022, culminating with World Milk Day.
ii.The Enjoy Dairy Rally celebrates the Nutrition, Communities and Enjoyment in each day.
Key Points:
i.More than 150 million households across the world are involved in milk production.
ii.In several developing countries, milk is produced by smallholders and milk production contributes to household livelihoods, food security and nutrition.
iii.The production of milk across the globe has increased by more than 59%, from 530 million tonnes in 1988 to 843 million tonnes in 2018.
iv.India is the world’s largest producer of milk, with 22% of global production, followed by the United States of America(USA), China, Pakistan and Brazil.
