United Nations(UN)’s Global Road Safety Week (UNGRSW) is a biennial global road safety campaign hosted by the World Health Organisation(WHO). The day aims to create awareness of road safety and make changes that will reduce the number of road deaths.
The Global Road Safety Week 2021 observed from 17th to 23rd May 2021 marks the 6th UNGRSW.
The theme of UN Global Road Safety Week 2021 is “Streets for Life #Love30”, which calls for 30 km/h default speed limits where people and vehicles mix.
Background:
i.The United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) has mandated the WHO and the UN Regional Commissions to host the biennial UN Global Road Safety Weeks.
ii.The first UNGRSW was celebrated in 2007.
UNGRSW 2021:
i.As a part of the UNGRSW 2021, the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 and its global plan will be launched.
ii.This is in line with the Stockholm Declaration, which highlights the importance of the holistic approach to road safety.
iii.This calls for improving the design of roads and vehicles, improving laws and law enforcement on behavioural risks like speeding and alcohol and driving.
