THE Asia University Rankings 2024According to the 12th edition of Times Higher Education’s (THE) Asia University Rankings (2024), Indian Institute of Science(IISc), Bengaluru (Karnataka), ranked 32nd on the list, is the highest ranked Indian institution. The 2024 list features a total of 91 Indian institutions.

  • Tsinghua University (China) has topped the list for the 6th consecutive year, followed by Peking University (China) and National University of Singapore (NUS) (Singapore) at 2nd and 3rd rank respectively.

About THE Asia University Ranking 2024:

i.THE Asia University Ranking 2024 ranked 739 universities from 31 countries/regions. This marks an increase of 10.5%, up from 669 in 2023.

ii.With 119 universities, Japan has the most representation on the 2024 ranking followed by India with 91 universities(up from 75 in 2023) and Mainland China with 86 universities.

Assessment:

i.The rankings are based on 18 performance indicators (up from 13 performance indicators in 2023 Rankings), to reflect the attributes of Asia’s institutions.

The indicators are grouped into 5 areas: Teaching (the learning environment); Research environment (volume, income and reputation); Research quality (citation impact, research strength, research excellence and research influence); International outlook (staff, students and research); and Industry (income and patents).

Indian Scenario:

i.Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru is the only Indian Institute which featured among the top 50 & Top 100 Asian Universities in the list.

ii.In 2023, 4 Indian Institutes/ Universities were featured in Top 100 of the list.

  • Ranking of Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences (Himachal Pradesh) dropped from 77th (2023) to 150th (2024) and the Rank of Mahatma Gandhi University (Kerala) dropped from 95th (2023) to 134th (2024).

Representations:

i.The 2024 rankings is dominated by universities from the South-East (SE) Asian countries like Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

ii.With 5 universities, Mainland China has the highest representation of universities in the Top 10 of the 2024 ranking followed by Hong Kong and Singapore with 2 universities each.

iii.Mainland China has 33 universities among the Top 100 followed by South Korea (16 universities).

v.A total of 98 universities have joined the rankings since last year. This increase is led by India, Türkiye, Iran and Pakistan.
