Tennis: French Open 2024: Carlos Alcaraz won Men’s Singles title & Iga Swiatek won Women’s Singles title

The French Open May 26 – Jun 9, 2024Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz(21 years old) won the Men’s singles title at the French Open 2024 (also known as Roland-Garros) by defeating Alexander Zverev of Germany in the finals held at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France.

  • This marks Alcaraz’s first French Open title and 3rd Grand Slam trophy overall.

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek of Poland won the Women’s singles title at the 2024 French Open defeating Jasmine Paolini of Italy. This marks her 4th French Open title and 5th Grand Slam title.

Note: Men’s singles title winner Carlos Alcaraz received the Musketeers’ Cup and a cash prize of 2.4 million euros and Women’s singles winner Iga Swiatek received the Suzanne-Lenglen Cup and a cash prize of 2.4 million euros.

2024 French Open:

i.The 2024 French Open was held from 26th May to 9th June 2024 at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France. This is the 123rd edition of the French Open and the second Grand Slam event of 2024.

  • BNP Paribas is the official sponsor of French Open 2024

ii.This is the only Grand Slam tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts.

iii.The first edition of the competition was held in 1891.

About Carlos Alcaraz:

i.With this victory, Carlos Alcaraz broke Rafael Nadal’s (Spain) record as the youngest man to win Grand Slam titles on all three surfaces (clay, grass and hard courts). Rafael achieved the feat at the age of 22.to win maiden French Open title 1

  • Alcaraz previously won the 2022 US Open on hard courts and the 2023 Wimbledon Championships on grass.

ii.He has won a total of 14 singles titles which includes 5 Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Masters 1000

iii.As of June 2024, He is ranked World No. 2 in the ATP Rankings (singles).

  • Following his win at the 2022 US Open, He became the youngest man and the first male teenager in the Open Era to top the singles rankings, at the age of 19 years 4 months and 6 days old.

About Iga Swiatek:

i.Iga Swiatek has previously won the French Open in 2023, 2022, and 2020.

  • She became the first woman to win three consecutive French Open since Justine Henin(Belgium) (2005,2006 & 2007).

ii.She becomes the first woman since Serena Williams in 2013 to win the Madrid Open; Italian Open and French Open (all three major clay-court titles) in one season.

Marcelo Arevalo & Mate Pavic won the Men’s Doubles Title

El Salvador’s Marcelo Arevalo and Croatia’s Mate Pavic secured the Men’s Doubles title after defeating Italian pair Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori. This is the first Grand Slam title of the pair.

Note:

i.This marks Arevalo’s 2nd French Open Men’s doubles title and Pavic’s first French Open Title.

ii.Marcelo Arevalo previously won the title in 2022, with Dutchman Jean-Julien Rojer.

iii.With this win, Pavic completed the set of winning all four Grand Slam titles in men’s doubles. He has previously won the Australian Open (2018); US open (2020) and Wimbledon (2021).

Coco Gauff & Katerina Siniakova won the Women’s Doubles title

Coco Gauff (The United States of America-USA) and Katerina Siniakova (Czech Republic) won the French Open’s women’s doubles title by defeating the Italian pair Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani.

i.This marks’ Siniakova’s 3rd French Open title and Gauffs first major doubles title.

ii.This also marks Siniakova’s 8th women’s Grand Slam doubles title which includes the Australian Open (2022, 2023), French Open (2018, 2021, 2024), Wimbledon Championships (2018, 2022) and US Open (2022).

iii.Gauff has become the youngest player to win both singles and doubles Grand Slam titles. she won her first singles grand slam title at the US Open 2023.

Laura Siegemund & Edouard Roger-Vasselin won the mixed doubles title

Germany’s Laura Siegemund and France’s Edouard Roger-Vasselin won the mixed doubles title after defeating the two-time Wimbledon Champions Desirae Krawczyk (USA) and Neal Skupski (Britain).

i.This is the first tournament Siegemund and Roger-Vasselin played together.

iii.This was the second mixed doubles Grand Slam title for Laura Siegemund while it was a first for Roger-Vasselin on his home soil.
