Droupadi Murmu, President of India, presented the Swachh Survekshan (Cleanliness Survey) Awards 2023 at the ceremony hosted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, Delhi.
i.Surat (Gujarat) and Indore (Madhya Pradesh/MP) were jointly recognised as the cleanest city in India under category of cities with a population more than 1 lakh.
ii.For 7 consecutive years (since 2016), Indore city, Madhya Pradesh has been ranked as the cleanest city in India.
iii.President Murmu also launched the Swachh Survekshan(SS) 2023 dashboard during the event.
Key People: Mohan Yadav, Chief Minister (CM) of MP and Vishnu Deo Sai, CM of Chhattisgarh along with several ministers were also present at the event.

i.During the event, 13 awardees received felicitations under the categories of Clean Cities, Cleanest Cantonment, SafaiMitra Suraksha, Ganga Towns, and Best Performing State.
ii.A total of 110 awards were presented during the award ceremony.

About Swachh Survekshan 2023:
“Swachh Survekshan 2023 – Mera Shehar, Meri Pehchan” is the 8th edition of the cleanliness survey started in 2016 by MoHUA under Swachh Bharat Mission(SBM).
i.Theme: The theme of SS 2023: “Waste to Wealth” highlights that wealth should be created out of waste, which will help overall cleanliness.
- The theme aligns with the Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban(SBM-U) 2.0 objective of fostering circularity in waste management and harnessing the potential of extracting value from waste.
ii.Assessment: SS 2023 assessed the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) formed on or before 31st December 2021. ULBs formed after this data may be included on formal request to MoHUA from the respective States/Union Territory.
iii.Participation: The Survey covered a total of 4,477 cities. (4,477 ULBs, 61 cantonment boards, 88 Ganga towns and 18,980 commercial areas participated in the 2023 survey)
iv.Parameters: Service level Progress (51%); Certification (26%); and Citizen’s Voice (23%).
Note:
i.73 major cities were evaluated during the 1st edition of the survey in 2016.
ii.SwachhSurvekshan is the world’s largest survey on urban sanitation and cleanliness.
iii.This is a ranking exercise undertaken to assess the rural and urban areas for their level of cleanliness and implementation of Swachhata mission.
iv.“Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” has been set as the theme of SS 2024.
Additional info:
i.In 2023, the Clean City Awards prioritize addressing legacy dumpsites, managing plastic waste, implementing the principles of reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and ensuring the safety of SafaiMitras.
ii.The 2023 survey was evaluated by a team of over 3,000 assessors.
iii.In 2014 there was only 15-16% scientific processing of waste, whereas in 2023 the number is almost 76%, in the next 2 to 3 years, 100% will be achieved
Highlights during the event.
i.The award ceremony witnessed the audio visual presentation highlighting Ek Tareekh Ek Ghanta Ek Saath campaign and the release of the SBM Anthem for 2024 “Naya Sankalp Hai, Naya Prakalp Hai”. The 2024 anthem was sung by playback singer, Kailash Kher.
ii.The event also had stalls by the Self-Help Group (SHG) showcasing like upcycled cloth bags, banana leaves showpieces, bamboo products, jewelry made out of waste.
iii. An exhibition of the latest technologies and equipment in waste management including mechanical sweeping machines, sewage cleaning robots, waste collection, transport vehicles, and state-of-the-art robots was orgnised as a part of the event.
