On April 10, 2024, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) released the 14th edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024, which marked Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, Delhi as India’s highest-ranked institution in Development Studies (20th globally).
- Harvard University of United States (US) topped the 4 broad subjects.
Assessment:
The edition featured 55 individual subjects across five broad subject areas viz. Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences & Medicine, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences & Management. 1,559 institutions have been ranked across these subjects with 64 universities debuting in 2024. Music is the one new subject to be added to 2024 rankings.

- JNU is also India’s top-ranked University in the subjects of Geography, History, Modern Languages, Politics, Anthropology, English Language & Literature and Linguistics.
- Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences (deemed to be university) in Chennai, TN secured the 24th spot globally in Dentistry and is the only Indian university to achieve a perfect score (100/100) in one of the QS indicators, namely the H Index, ranking number one in this metric, within the Dentistry table.
Other Highlights:
i.69 Indian universities featured in the 2024 QS World University Rankings by Subject, with 424 entries, marking a 19.4% increase from 2023.
- In the broader Asian context, India became the second most represented country in Asia after China whose 101 institutions were on the list.
- India ranked 5th regionally for the number of entries in the top 200 and 6th for the top 100 entries.
ii.72% of Indian entries this year showed improvement, maintained positions, or were new to the list, while only 18% experienced a decline, demonstrating a 17% Year-on-Year (Y-o-Y) improvement.
iii.12 Institutes of Eminence (IoE) contributed 40% of India’s total entries, with 47 of the top 100 Indian positions and 14 of the 21 positions across 55 academic disciplines and five faculty areas.
iv.University of Delhi (30 entries), IIT Bombay (28 entries) and IIT Kharagpur (West Bengal) (27 entries) were the most represented Indian universities.
v.IIM-Bangalore (Karnataka) and IIM-Calcutta (West Bengal) were among the top 50 globally for business and management studies.
vi.India experienced a remarkable 54% surge in research output from 2017 to 2022, solidifying its position as a rapidly expanding research center.

i.According to the 8th edition of India Rankings (India Ranking 2023), prepared by Ministry of Education (MoE) based on parameters defined by National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras (IITM), Chennai, Tamil Nadu(TN), has topped the list for the 5th consecutive time.
ii.According to the ‘Times Higher Education(THE) World University Ranking 2024’, the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru (IISc Bengaluru) is Ranked No. 1 among Indian institutions, falling into the 201- 250 band ranking for the first time since 2017. IISc Bengaluru has moved up from 251-300 band in 2023.
