President Droupadi Murmu appoints six new Governors, reshuffles three othersPresident of India, Droupadi Murmu, has appointed new Governors in 9  states (Sikkim; Meghalaya; Jharkhand; Telangana; Chhattisgarh; Rajasthan; Manipur (Additional charge); Assam; Punjab; and Maharashtra;) and a new Lieutenant Governor (Lt Gov)of the Union Territory (UT) of Puducherry.

  • All the appointments will be effective from the dates the Governors assume charge of their respective offices.

About Om Prakash Mathur:

i.He is a former member of the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan and is a senior politician from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

ii.He served as BJP’s state President and currently, he is serving as a national vice-president of the BJP.

About Lakshman Prasad Acharya:

i.In 1995, he assumed the role of General Secretary for the combined district of Varanasi, which included Varanasi and Chandauli in Uttar Pradesh.

ii.In 2015, he was elected as a Member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council (MLC) after contesting the election from the Legislative Assembly constituency and was re-elected for a 2nd term as a MLC in 2021.

iii.He has also been given additional charge as Governor of Manipur.

About Chandrashekar Honnabhandar Vijayashankar (C.H.) Vijayashankar:

i.He served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), Karnataka from 1994-1998.

ii.He was elected to the Mysuru (Karnataka) Lok Sabha twice in 1998 and 2004.

About Kuniyil Kailashnathan:

i.He is a 1979-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Gujarat cadre.

ii.In 2006, he joined Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi’s Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) as his Principal Secretary and retired in 2013.

iii.He served as the Chief Principal Secretary in the Gujarat CMO from 2013 to 2024.

  • He served under 4 CMs namely Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, Anandiben Patel, Vijay Rupani, and Bhupendra Patel.

About Gulab Chand Kataria:

i.As a senior leader of the BJP from Rajasthan, he represented Udaipur, Rajasthan in the 9th Lok Sabha, from 1989-1991.

ii.He was the Home Minister in the Government of Rajasthan from 2004 to 2008 and again from 2015 to 2018.

iii.He was also the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly from 2002 to 2003; in 2013; and from 2019 to 2023 till his appointment as the 31st Governor of Assam.

About C.P. Radhakrishnan:

i.He was a two-time former Member of Parliament (MP) of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu in 1998 and 1999, and served as the president of the BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit from 2004 to 2007.

ii.In 2023, he was appointed as the Governor of Jharkhand, and in March 2024, he was given additional charge as Governor of Telangana and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.

iii.Radhakrishnan becomes the 3rd governor of Maharashtra in the past 5 years, following Bhagat Singh Koshyari (2019-2023) and Ramesh Bais (February 18, 2023, to July 28, 2024).

With this appointment, Radhakrishnan is the 24th governor of Maharashtra.

About Santosh Kumar Gangwar:

i.He is an 8th-time Lok Sabha member, representing the Bareilly constituency in Uttar Pradesh from 1989 till 2019 (except 2009-14).

ii.He held the portfolio of Minister of State (MoS) in the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs (MoPA) between 1999 and 2004.

iii.He was re-elected in 2014, assumed the role of MoS in the Ministry of Textiles (MoT), and transitioned to MoS (Independent Charge), Ministry of Labour and Employment (MoL&E) until 2021.

About Jishnu Dev Varma: He previously served as the Deputy CM of Tripura from 2018 to 2023.

About Ramen Deka:

i.He was elected an MP in the Lower House of the Parliament twice, being elected from the Mangaldoi (Assam) constituency in the 2009 and 2014 Lok Sabha elections, respectively.

About Haribhau Kisanrao Bagde:

i.He served 6 terms as MLA, 1st time in 1985 from the Aurangabad East constituency in Maharashtra and a 5-time MLA from the Phulambri Assembly Constituency in Maharashtra.

ii.He was a Former Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly from 2014 to 2019.

About Appointment of Governor:

i.Article 153 of the Constitution of India states that there shall be a Governor for each State.

ii.Under Article 155, the appointment of Governor of a State shall be appointed by the President by warrant under his hand and seal.

iii.The executive power of the State shall be vested in the Governor and shall be exercised by him either directly or through officers subordinate to him following Article 154.

iii.According to Article 157, a person must be a citizen of India and at least 35 years old to be eligible for appointment as a state governor.
