The 141st edition of the US Open Tennis Championship was held in USA’s New York City, which is also the 4th & last Grand Slam title of 2021 being conducted in a ‘Hard Court’ between 30th August and 12th September 2021. The finals of the tournament were held at Arthur Ashe Stadium, New York, USA.
Daniil Medvedev wins Maiden Grand Slam defeating Novak DjokovicÂ
Russia’s Daniil Medvedev, the current World No.2 ranked tennis player, defeated Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in the finals of Men’s Singles in the US Open 2021 winning 3 straight sets with 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.
i.Notably, Djokovic was in line for breaking the 52-year old record by Rod Laver of winning all 4 Grand Slams in a Calendar year. (Djokovic won Men’s Singles at 2021 French Open, Australian Open & Wimbledon)
ii.Previously in the 2021 Australian Open, Daniil Medvedev was defeated by Novak Djokovic in 3-straight sets.
iii.Medvedev became the 3rd Russian to win a Grand Slam title after Yevgeny Kafelnikov (1996 French Open) & Marat Safin (2000 US Open)
Emma Raducanu – Youngest Female since Maria Sharapova to Win a Grand SlamÂ
18-year old Emma Raducanu from Britain defeated Canada’s Leylah Fernandez to win the Women’s Singles Title in the 2021 US Opens tournament. She became the youngest female to win a Grand Slam Title since Maria Sharapova’s 2004 Wimbledon victory.
i.Emma Raducanu, ranked 150th, entered the Women’s singles finals by winning 10 straight matches, becoming the 1st woman to win a US Opens title without dropping a set, since Serena Williams victory in 2014.
ii.In the finals Raducanu defeated Fernandez in 6-4, 6-3 sets.
iii.Raducanu is also the 1st British Woman to win a Grand Slam singles trophy since the 1977 Wimbledon win by Virginia Wade.
Note- In the Open Era (professional tennis since 1968), Swiss legend Martina Hingis is the youngest Grand Slam winner ever, courtesy her Australian Open triumph in 1997 at the age of just 16 years and 117 days.USA’s Michael Chang is the youngest men’s tennis player to win a Grand Slam title. He won the 1980 French Open title at the age of 17 years and 110 days.

Rajeev Ram – Joe Salisbury pair wins Men’s Doubles Title
Rajeev Ram (USA) paired with Joe Salisbury (Britain) to win the Men’s Doubles Title in the 2021 US Open by winning 2 of the 3 sets with 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 against Bruno Soares – Jamie Murray (Brazil – UK).
- The 2020 Australian Open winning pair won 2 consecutive sets after losing the 1st set to seal their victory in the finals.
Desirae Krawczyk – Joe Salisbury pair wins Mixed Doubles Title
Desirae Krawczyk – Joe Salisbury (USA – UK) pair won the 2021 US Open Mixed doubles title after defeating Giuliana Olmos – Marcelo Arevalo in the finals with 7-5, 6-2 set victory.
- Salisbury paired with Rajeev Ram has also won the Men’s Doubles title in the tournament.
- While Krawczyk becomes the first man or woman to win three consecutive Slam mixed doubles titles since India’s Mahesh Bhupathi win in 2005 Wimbledon & US Open.
