Ministry Of Sports Identified 8 State-Owned Sports Facilities to Upgrade into Khelo India State Centres of Excellence

KHELO INDIA enhance India's Olympic performanceOn 17th June 2020, The Sports Ministry prepared to establish Khelo India State Centres of Excellence(KISCE) under the Khelo India Scheme and identified 8 state owned sports facilities to upgrade as KISCE.

Purpose of KISCE:

i.The Centres are established to enhance the performance of India in Olympic games.

ii.The Centres are aimed to transform the facilities across the nation into academies of world class standard.

The Selection Process of KISCE:

i.The process of selection began in October 2019.

ii.The Ministry of sports asked the state and union territories to identify the best sport infrastructure available within them.

iii.The ministry shortlisted 8 institutes from the received 15 proposals.

  • Sangey Lhaden Sports Academy, Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh
  • Jaiprakash Narayan National Youth Center, Bangalore, Karnataka
  • GV Raja Sr. Secondary Sports School, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala
  • Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, Imphal, Manipur
  • Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, Aizawl, Mizoram
  • State Sports Academy, IG Stadium, Kohima, Nagaland
  • Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneshwar, Odisha
  • Regional Sports School, Hakimpet, Telangana. 

iv.The Centres are selected by the government committees after in depth analysis.

Financial Support for the Centre:

i.The Khelo India Scheme will extend the fund for expert coaches, support staff, equipment and infrastructure.

ii.Sports science and technology support for the sports practiced in the centre and the requirements of equipment, expert coaches and high performance managers will be supported through the viability gap funding by the government for the Olympic sports.

iii.The State or UT will manage the centre including boarding, lodging and maintenance.

iv.After the comprehensive gap analysis study, the 8 centres will be granted with finalised actual amounts based on their requirements.

Key Points:

i.The state and UT will identify and develop talents in each sport through the fundings received by the centre.

ii.To improve the standards and performances of the athletes the Sports Authority of India will provide expertise, resource and monitoring system.
