CMLRE Releases National Report on Deep-Sea and Distant-Water Fishery Resources in Indian EEZ
In August 2026, the Centre for Marine Living Resources & Ecology (CMLRE), the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), released the comprehensive ‘National Report on Deep-Sea and Distant-Water Fishery Resources of the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)’, assessment of marine resources.

  • The report was released as part of CMLRE’s Silver Jubilee celebrations  in the presence of Dr. M. Ravichandran, former secretary, MoES; former CMLRE Directors Dr. P. Madheswaran and Dr. M. Sudhakar; Dr. M. V. Ramana Murthy, Director of the Deep Ocean Mission; and Dr. R. S. Maheshkumar, Head of CMLRE, in Kochi, Kerala.

Highlights of the Event:
Editorial Leadership: The publication was edited by Dr V. N. Sanjeevan, former Director, CMLRE; and Dr Baban Ingole, retired Scientist, National Institute of Oceanography(NIO), Goa, and published under the leadership of Dr R. S. Maheshkumar, Head of CMLRE.
Research Legacy: The report brings together nearly four decades of pioneering oceanographic research and three decades of systematic surveys across India’s 2.37 million (Mn) square kilometre (Sq Km) Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Roadmap: The report provides a comprehensive roadmap for the sustainable development of India’s Blue Economy, ensuring sustainable use of marine resources while conserving biodiversity.
Vessel: The studies were largely supported by India’s flagship research vessel, the Fishery and Oceanographic Research Vessel (FORV) Sagar Sampada.

Overview of Japan’s Defence Minister Shinjirō Koizumi’s Visit to India from August 19-20, 2026 
Shinjirō Koizumi, Defence Minister of Japan, undertook a two-day official visit to India from August 19 to 20, 2026, marking his first-ever visit to the country, aimed at strengthening defence ties and enhancing maritime security cooperation between the two nations.
Key Highlights of Visit:
Visit to Mumbai: Upon his arrival in Mumbai (Maharashtra), he inspected a Guard of Honour at the Western Naval Command (WNC) and laid a wreath at the Gaurav Stambh at the Naval Dockyard and visited the indigenous stealth destroyer Indian Naval Ship (INS) Chennai.
Visit to Delhi: Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi arrived in New Delhi, where he inspected the ceremonial Guard of Honour at the Manekshaw Centre in the presence of Union Minister Rajnath Singh, Minister of Defence (MoD) and also laid a wreath at the National War Memorial and paid homage  to the soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice.
Defence Ministers Meeting (DMM): Later, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, along with his Japanese  Koizumi, co-chaired  the Japan-India Defence Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi.

  • The key outcome of the bilateral meeting was the signing of a  Memorandum of Arrangement (MoA) on Maritime Security Cooperation
  • Other key outcomes were: setting up a Working Group (WG) headed at the Director-General (DG)/Joint Secretary level; India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Japan’s Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA) will strengthen cooperation in advanced defence technologies; convene a Defence Industry Forum; and welcoming the expansion of bilateral military exercises (Dharma Guardian and  Japan-India Maritime Exercise, JAIMEX), among others.

PhonePe Signs Key MoUs with MeitY & DPIIT to Boost PM GatiShakti and Startup Ecosystem 
In August 2026, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with PhonePe to integrate PhonePe PulsePro insights into the Pradhan Mantri (PM) GatiShakti National Master Plan portal for data-driven infrastructure planning and development.

  • The dignitaries present during the announcement included S. Krishnan, Secretary of MeitY, and Karthik Raghupathy, Head of Strategy at PhonePe.
  • Phonepe also signed a MoU with Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) to strengthen the Startup Ecosystem.

Highlights of Partnership: 
Integration: The metrics from PhonePe PulsePro will be integrated into the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan portal, managed in collaboration with Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics (BISAG-N), to provide planners with additional transactional insights.
MoU:  DPIIT partnered with PhonePe and Shell India to provide startups with technology access, mentorship, market opportunities, and industry support.

Union Cabinet Approves Permanent Bench of J&K High Court in Ladakh
In August 2026, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, approved the establishment of a permanent bench of the High Court(HC) of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) and Ladakh in the Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh, aimed at improving access to justice for people in remote regions.
About J&K–Ladakh High Court Bench:
Structure: The HC of J&K and Ladakh is the common HC for the UT of J&K and Ladakh. It currently has two seats in Srinagar and Jammu, with the upcoming Ladakh bench becoming its third judicial location.
Benefits: Ladakh, a high-altitude UT with scattered settlements across Leh and Kargil districts, will benefit from the new bench as it reduces the need for litigants to travel to Jammu or Srinagar for court hearings.
Significance: The permanent bench will enhance ease of legal access for people of Ladakh. It will reduce pendency and improve case disposal efficiency in the region.

Jindal Steel & IIT Hyderabad Signs MoU to Establish CoE for Advanced Steel Solutions
In August 2026, Jindal Steel Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH), Telangana to set up a first-of-its-kind Jindal Steel Centre of Excellence (CoE) at the IITH campus in Kandi, Sangareddy district, Telangana, focused on High-Strength, Value-Added and Value-Engineered Steel Products and Solutions.
About Jindal Steel CoE:
Collaboration: The partnership combines IIT Hyderabad’s research capabilities with Jindal Steel’s industrial expertise to enable wider adoption of stronger, lighter, and more efficient steel solutions.
Focus: The Centre will focus on accelerating the development, application, and adoption of advanced steel solutions across infrastructure, engineering, construction, and strategic industrial sectors.
Activities: The CoE will conduct application development, technical demos, and training, and collaborate with government and Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) stakeholders to promote advanced steel solutions.
Significance: The Centre will support sustainable infrastructure development, reduced material usage, improved efficiency in construction and engineering projects, and indigenous development of advanced steel applications aligned with Viksit Bharat 2047.

In August 2026, Wizzmoni Financial Services Ltd. (formerly Unimoni), an Indian  Non-Banking Finance Company (NBFC),   entered into a strategic partnership with Oman Air to launch the co-branded “Wizz Voyager Multi-Currency Card”, an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered travel card support multiple global currencies.

Key Purpose: It is designed for international travellers which include students, professionals, and tourists and  supports over 35 currencies, delivering seamless digital forex experience through a feature-rich mobile application (app) with real-time tracking and smart financial controls.
Unified Payment Platform: In order to deliver  a more seamless travel experience, the partnership combines payments, rewards, and travel benefits into a single platform.
Issuer: Wizz Voyager is a prepaid multi-currency foreign exchange card issued by Wizzmoni Financial Services, an RBI-authorised Category II Dealer, in association with Visa Inc.
About Wizzmoni: It is an Autorised Dealer Category-II (AD-II) licensed financial services provider which offers digital wallet solutions, multi-currency travel cards, foreign exchange, among others.

IDFC FIRST Bank Successfully Completed its  Maiden USD 500 Million Bond Issuance 
In August 2026, IDFC First Bank Limited, a leading private sector bank in India, successfully completed its maiden USD 500 million bond issuance through its International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) Banking Unit (IBU) at Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

  • This marks the private lender’s official debut in global debt capital markets.

Key Details:
Tenure and Coupon Rate: The newly issued bonds have a 3-year tenure (due 2029) with a fixed coupon rate of 5.625%.
Format: These bonds were placed with investors outside the United States of America (USA) in Regulation S format.
Credit Rating: The notes carry an investment-grade ‘BBB-’ rating from S&P Global Ratings, with a Stable Outlook.
Key Investors: The transaction was  supported by marquee global institutional investors which include: BlackRock, Capital Group, Alliancebernstein, among others.
Interest Payment: Interest will be paid semi-annually on February 25 and August 25, with the first payment scheduled for February 25, 2027.
About IDFC First Bank: It was formed in 2018 following the merger of IDFC Bank Limited and Capital First Limited. Headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, it is a private-sector bank offering retail, corporate, wealth management and other banking services.

Two Indian Doctors Nominated for Pakistan’s Nishan-e-Imtiaz Award
In August 2026, Pakistan nominated Mumbai(Maharashtra)-based Parsi doctors Dr Jal Ratanji Patel (Physician) and Dr Jal Dhaybho-Koo (Radiologist) for the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, Pakistan’s highest civilian award, for maintaining the confidentiality of Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s terminal illness before the Partition of India in 1947.
About Nishan-e-Imtiaz:
Honour: The doctors have been nominated for the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, awarded for outstanding services to the state of Pakistan.
Ceremony: The Nishan-e-Imtiaz will be awarded posthumously in March 2027.
History:  In 1946, the doctors diagnosed Jinnah with advanced tuberculosis(TB) through his X-ray and kept his illness confidential before Partition.
Jinnah’s health secrecy was considered historically significant, with potential influence on Partition of India (1947). He died on 11 September 1948.

APPOINTMENTS & RESIGNATIONS

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir Elected as the 23rd President of Bangladesh
In August 2026, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, a senior leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was elected as the 23rd President of People’s Republic of Bangladesh for a 5-year term through a parliamentary election held at the Jatiya Sangsad (Bangladesh Parliament), Dhaka.

  • The election was held following Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned on 24 July 2026 under Article 54 of the Bangladesh Constitution, who had served as the President of Bangladesh since 24 April 2023.
  • The 2026 presidential election marked the first contested presidential election in Bangladesh in 35 years.

Election Outcome:
Vote Share: He secured 255 votes in the presidential election, defeating his opponent, Colonel (Retd.) Oli Ahmed, Chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), who was backed by an 11-party opposition alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and the National Citizen Party (NCP) received 88 votes.
Voting Process: The election saw 343 of 349 eligible Members of Parliament (MPs) participate, with voting conducted using three transparent ballot boxes.

Somanath Panicker Appointed as Part-time Director of RBI Central Board; Anand Mahindra Re-appointed 
In August 2026, the Government of India (GoI) appointed former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman Somanath Sreedhara Panicker and re-appointed Anand Gopal Mahindra, Chairman of the Mahindra Group, as Part-time, Non-official Directors on the Central Board of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a period of 4 years with effect from 20 August 2026.
About Somanath Sreedhara Panicker:  
At ISRO:He served as the 10th Chairman of ISRO and Secretary of the Department of Space from 15 January 2022 to 14 January 2025.
Key Achievement:During his tenure, ISRO achieved the Chandrayaan-3 soft landing near the lunar south pole on 23 August 2023.

Flying Wedge Defence Unveils India’s First AI Fighter Jet ‘FWD Supreme Lite’
In August 2026, Flying Wedge Defence & Aerospace Technologies Private Limited(FWDA), Indian defence startup, unveiled ‘FWD Supreme Lite’, India’s 1st Artificial Intelligence (AI)-piloted fighter jet programme, marking a major transition from digital engineering and concept development to a physical aircraft.
About FWD Supreme Lite:
Design & Capability: Designed and developed entirely in India, the platform offers up to 30 hours endurance and a 3,000 kilometer(km) range, with AI-driven autonomy enabling precision strikes, swarm operations, and real-time Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions.

  • The newly unveiled fighter jet demonstrator weighs around 250 kilogram (kg) and is currently progressing through airframe development, system integration, and ground testing.

Scope and Concept: The fighter jet is being designed around the Mobbing Doctrine, a new warfare doctrine, which proposes deployment of a larger number of AI-piloted fighter aircraft to create numerical, tactical and economic asymmetry.
Key Objectives: The performance objectives of the programme have been divided into two phases:

  • Phase-I: aims to achieve maximum Mach 0.9 speed; nearly Mach 0.5 cruise speed; 700 to 1,000 kilometer (km) operational range depending on missile profile, among others.
  • Phase-II: supersonic performance targets (i.e. to reach Mach 2 speed); multi-aircraft autonomous teaming, among others.

Astronomers Discover Rocky 170-Million-Year-Old ‘Mega-Earth’ Named ‘GJ 523b’ 
In August 2026, astronomers discovered a 170-million-year-old giant exoplanet named ‘GJ 523b’ which has been informally dubbed as ‘mega-Earth’ due to its weight (23 times Earth’s weight) and over 2.5 times larger than Earth.
About GJ 523b:
Discovery: It was initially discovered by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) but, its existence was confirmed by Max Krof from Wisconsin Center for Origins Research (WiCOR), using ground-based instruments, including the WIYN 3.5 meter (m) Telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona, the United States of America (USA).
Size and Mass: The newly discovered exoplanet has a radius of nearly 2.55 times larger than Earth and a density of about 126.82 grams (gms) per cubic inch.
Orbit: It orbits a mid-sized, orange K-dwarf star (which is 87 light years away from the Earth)every 17.75 days in a unique, highly tilted polar orbit.

Ahmedabad to Host Commonwealth Cue Sports Championships in October 2026
In August 2026, Ishaun Singh, President of the World Pool Association (WPA), announced that Ahmedabad(Gujarat) will host the 2nd Commonwealth Cue Sports Championships in October 2026 at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex, Ahmedabad.
About Commonwealth Cue Sports Championships 2026: 
Participation: The championship will feature athletes from 45 countries competing across 5 disciplines and 10 medal events in both men’s and women’s categories.
Organizers: The event will be conducted under the aegis of the Billiards and Snooker Federation of India (BSFI) and the World Confederation of Billiards Sports (WCBS), with event management handled by Apex Sports Promotion.  Participation Format: The tournament will feature 16 athletes per gender in 10-Ball, Heyball, Blackball, and Snooker, while English Billiards will have 8 athletes per gender.

  • Each Commonwealth country will receive one guaranteed unranked entry, with the remaining positions allocated based on world rankings.

About WPA: Established in 1987 and headquartered in Austria, the WPA is the global governing body for pocket billiards/pool and operates under the umbrella of the WCBS.

International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism 2026 – August 21
In August 2026, the United Nations (UN) observed the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism on 21 August 2026 to honour victims and survivors of terrorism, promote their human rights and fundamental freedoms, and support their recovery, rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

  • 2026 Theme:  “Healing Through Memory”

Background: 
Establishment: The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) through Resolution A/RES/72/165 adopted in 2017, established the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism, to be observed annually on 21 August.
Observance: The first International Day of Remembrance.
2026 Event: 
Venue: The UN organised a High-Level Virtual Event on 21 August 2026 in the UN Headquarters, New York,  under the theme “Healing through Memory”.
Initiative: The event launched the ‘Building a Safer Internet for Victims of Terrorism’ initiative by the Victims of Terrorism Associations Network (VoTAN) to address online harms faced by victims of terrorism and prevent re-traumatisation.

World Senior Citizen’s Day 2026 – August 21 
World Senior Citizen’s Day is observed annually across the world on 21st August across the globe to honour and recognise the invaluable contributions of senior citizens to society.
Background: 
Proclamation: Ronald Reagan, the then former President of the United States of America (USA), officially announced World Senior Citizens Day after signing Proclamation 5847 on August 19, 1988
UNGA’s Designation: Subsequently, on 14 December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) designated October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons, to be observed annually.
Ageing Population Outlook: 
Global Ageing Trend: According to the World Health Organization, by 2030, 1 in 6 people globally will be aged 60+; population to rise from 1 billion (2020) to 1.4 billion, projected to reach 2.1 billion by 2050.
In India: By 2050, India is projected to have over 300 million citizens aged 60 and above, accounting for nearly one in five Indians.
