Indian Contingent Bags 43 Medals At ASBC Asian U-22 And Youth Boxing Championships In Astana, Kazakhstan

The Indian boxing team bagged a total of 43 medals at the Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC) Asian U-22 and Youth Boxing Championships 2024, held in Astana, Kazakhstan, from April 25 to May 8, 2024.

Key Points:

i.The Indian boxers secured 12 gold, 14 silver, and 17 bronze medals from both the youth and U-22 categories and ranked second in terms of the medal count, only behind the host Kazakhstan, which won 48 medals in total.

ii.The Indian Under -22 (U-22) team finished with 21 medals, including seven gold, five silver, and nine bronze medals, while the youthcategory bagged 22 medals, including five gold, nine silver, and eight bronze medals.

iii.The Asian Boxing Federation hosted the 2024 Asian U-22 and Youth Boxing Championship.

Key Highlights of the Tournament:

i.Under Men’s Category:

  • Brijesh gave India its first gold medal in youth category by defeating Tajikistan’s Muminov Muinkhodzha in the men’s 48kg final while Aryan (51kg) continued the momentum and defeated Kyrgyzstan’s Kamilov Zafarbek.
  • Vishvanath Suresh (48kg) outboxed Kazakhstan’s Karap Yernar to win the country’s first gold medal in the U-22 category.
  • Akash Gorkha (60kg) achieved his win over Kazakhstan’s Ruslan Kuzeubayev, clinching India’s third gold medal in the men’s category (U-22).

ii.Under Women’s Category:

  • Olympic boxer Preeti (54kg) clinched a gold medal in the U-22 category after defeating Kazakhstan’s Bazarova Elina while Muskan (75kg) defeated Zokirova Aziza of Uzbekistan giving India its seventh U-22 gold medal.
