On October 7, 2021, India officially joined the High Ambition Coalition (HAC) for Nature and People during a ceremony between the French and Indian governments held at New Delhi, India.In this regard, Rameshwar Prasad Gupta, Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India handed over the signed HAC agreement to Emmanuel Lenain, Ambassador of France to India.
- This joining comes ahead of high-level biodiversity meeting to be virtually hosted by China on October 11-15, 2021.
- India’s decision to join the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People, was initiated at the “One Planet Summit” in Paris in January 2021.
About HAC for Nature & People:
India is the first of the BRICS bloc of major emerging economies (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) to join the HAC. It is a group of more than 70 countries co-chaired by Costa Rica and France and by the United Kingdom as Ocean co-chair
- It encourages the adoption of global deal to protect at least 30% of world’s land and ocean by 2030 i.e. 30*30.
- The High Ambition Coalition (HAC) for Nature and People is an intergovernmental group of 70 countries co-chaired by Costa Rica and France and by the United Kingdom as Ocean co-chair.
