  1. A can complete 2/5th of a piece of work in 6 days and B can complete 1/3rd of the same work in 10 days. If both A and B work together, they can do 4/5th of that work in how many days?
    A. 4 days
    B. 5 days
    C. 8 days
    D. 10 days
    E. 6 days
    C. 8 days
    Explanation:

A can do 2/5th of the work in 6 days, so whole work in 5/2 * 6 = 15 days.
B can do 1/3th of the work in 10 days, so whole work in 3/1 * 10 = 30 days.
A and B together can complete whole work in 15*30/(15+30) = 10 days.
    So 4/5th work in 4/5 * 10 = 8 days

  2. A person invested Rs 20,000 with rate of interest at 20% pa. Find the total interest earned at the end of two years if for the first year the interest was compounded half yearly and for the second year it was compounded yearly?
    A. Rs 9500
    B. Rs 5040
    C. Rs 8200
    D. Rs 9040
    E. Rs 9400
    D. Rs 9040
    Explanation:

    For 1st year – time = 2, r% = 20/2 = 10%. So Amount after 1st year = 20,000 [(1+10/100)]2 = Rs 24,200
    Amount after 2nd year = 24,200 [(1+20/100)]1 = Rs 29,040
    So CI = 29040 – 20000 = 9040

  3. Rs 117 are to be divided among A, B and C in the ratio 1/2 : 1/3 : 1/4, but by mistake it was divided in the ratio of 2 : 3 : 4 among them respectively. Find out that who gains the most in this transaction and by how much?
    A. A, Rs 25
    B. B, Rs 3
    C. C, Rs 20
    D. C, Rs 25
    E. B, Rs 15
    D. C, Rs 25
    Explanation:

    Ratio in which divided = 2 : 3 : 4
    Actual ratio = 1/2 : 1/3 : 1/4 or 6 : 4 : 3
Both ratios show that A and B have lost and C has gained the most.
    C got = 4/(2+3+4) * 117 = 52
    Actually C would have got = 3/(6+4+3) * 117 = 27
    So C gained 52 – 27 = 25

  4. A and B can alone complete a work in 6 days and 14 days respectively. Both start the work but do the work on alternate days starting with A. After how many days the work will be completed in this way?
    A. 8 2/7 days
    B. 8 days
    C. 6 2/7 days
    D. 9 days
    E. 9 2/3 days
    A. 8 2/7 days
    Explanation:

    LCM (6, 14) = 42
    So total work = 42
    A’s efficiency = 42/6 = 7
    B’s efficiency = 42/14 = 3
    2 days work (A+B) = 7+3 = 10
    Multiply by 4 both side
    8 days work (A+B) = 40
    Remaining work = 42 – 40 = 2
Now A’s turn, he will complete remaining work in 2/7 day
    So total 8 2/7 days.

  5. The selling price of an article is marked at 25% above the cost price. At the time of selling, a discount of 12% is allowed. In this whole transaction what is the actual profit% on the article?
    A. 15%
    B. 10%
    C. 8.6%
    D. 12%
    E. None of these
    B. 10%
    Explanation:

    Use M.P. = (100 + p%)/(100 – d%) * C.P.
    MP is 25% above CP.
    125/100 C.P. = (100 + p%)/(100 – 12) * C.P.
    Find p%

  6. A man starts at 8:00 AM with speed 25 km/hr. Another man 300 km away from first man starts at 9:00 AM at 30 km/hr in opposite direction of the first one. At what time will they meet?
    A. 11:45 AM
    B. 2:00 PM
    C. 1:00 PM
    D. 3:30 PM
    E. 3:00 PM
    B. 2:00 PM
    Explanation:

    Distance is 300 km
Speed of first = 25 km/hr, so after 1 hr, i.e. at 9:00 AM, the first has covered 25 km.
    The distance left = (300 – 25) km = 275 km. relative speed = 25 + 30 = 55
    So time they will meet at = 9:00 AM + 275 / 55
    = 9:00 AM + 5 hrs = 2:00 PM

  7. From a vessel full of milk 6 litres are drawn and filled with water. The same operation is performed two more times. After this, the vessel contains milk and water in the ratio 8 : 117. What is the amount of milk that the vessel initially contained?
    A. 15 litres
    B. 10 litres
    C. 20 litres
    D. 30 litres
    E. None of these
    B. 10 litres
    Explanation:

When the original quantity is x litres, and y litres of mixture is poured out and again filled with water with operation being performed n times.
    The quantity left is = x [1 – y/x]n
Here the final ratio is 8 : 117
    So,
    8/8+117 = x [1 – 6/x]3 / x
    8/125 = [1 – 6/x]3
    2/5 = [1 – 6/x]
    x = 10

  8. A and B starts a business and invest Rs. 2100 and Rs. 3100 respectively. A is an active partner so he gets 25% of the profit from the entire profit at the end of a year. If the business yields a total or Rs. 1040 as profit, what is the share of each of them?
    A. Rs. 415, Rs. 625
    B. Rs. 575, Rs. 465
    C. Rs. 515, Rs. 425
    D. Rs. 465, Rs. 575
    E. None of these
    B. Rs. 575, Rs. 465
    Explanation:

    Ratio of share of profit = 2100 : 3100 = 21 : 31
    Separately A gets = 25/100 * 1040 = Rs 260
    Profit left = 1040-260 = 780
    Now A gets = 21/(21+31) * 780 = 315
    B gets = 780-315 = 465
    Total that A gets = 260+315 = 575

  9. A jar contains 4 red balls, 5 blue balls and 3 green balls. From this 2 balls are drawn at random. What is the probability that both balls are either green or red in color?
    A. 2/31
    B. 2/33
    C. 1/22
    D. 3/22
    E. None of these
    D. 3/22
    Explanation:

    Case 1 : 2 green balls:
    Prob = 3C2 / 12C2 = 1/22.
    Case 2 : 2 red balls:
    Prob = 4C2 / 12C2 = 1/11.
    So total prob. = 1/22 + 1/11= 3/22

  10. Among 100 students in a class, 50 Rs is to be distributed such that each boy gets 60 paise and each girl gets 35 paise. What is the number of boys and girls in the class?
    A. 60 girls, 40 boys
    B. 40 girls, 60 boys
    C. 70 girls, 30 boys
    D. 30 girls, 70 boys
    E. None of these
    B. 40 girls, 60 boys
    Explanation:

Rs 24 distributed among 48 students, so average money each student gets = 50/100 = 1/2 Re or 50 p.
    By method of allegation:
    Girl                                    Boy
    35                                      60
    .                        50
    (60-50)=10                  (50-35)=15
    Ratio is 10 : 15 or 2 : 3
    So girls = 2/(2+3) * 100 = 40
    Boys = 60
