The State Government of Himachal Pradesh(HP) has initiated ‘Parvat Dhara Yojana’ to revive, recharge aquifers (underground layer which contains water) and conserve natural resources of water in the state.
Objective – To enhance water level by retaining water for the maximum period.
i.It is set to be implemented in 10 districts of Himachal Pradesh.
ii.An outlay of INR 20 Crore has been set aside for implementation of the scheme.
iii.Forest Department of Himachal Pradesh will implement the scheme in forest areas.
Key Points
i.The scheme was announced in the Himachal Pradesh State Budget for the FY 2020-21.
ii.The scheme will provide irrigation facilities in sloping fields, Forest Department; it has already started the construction of storage structures.
iii.During 2020-21, on pilot basis Forest Department had spent INR 2.76 Crore for construction of 110 big and small ponds, 600 check dams and walls, 12, 000 contour trenches.

- Around 27% of Himachal Pradesh (15, 433 Sq Kms of total 55, 643 Sq Kms) is under Forest Cover.
- It houses 33 Wildlife Sanctuaries & 2 National Parks.
- It is home to 36% of India’s species of birds.
