Govt Approves 4 major rail projects worth Rs. 24,634 crore across Four StatesIn October 2025, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by the Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, approved 4 railway multi-tracking projects of the Ministry of Railways (MoR) with a total cost of Rs. 24,634 crore (cr).
- These initiatives are part of the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan(PMGS-NMP), which aims to enhance connectivity, reduce congestion, and support economic growth across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh(MP), Gujarat, and Chhattisgarh.

Projects: The 4 projects covering 18 districts in Maharashtra, MP, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh will increase the existing network of Indian Railways(IR) by about 894 kilometre (km). The projects are:
- Maharashtra: Addition of 3rd and 4th lines between Wardha–Bhusawal, spanning 314 km.
- Maharashtra & Chhattisgarh: Construction of 4th line between Gondia–Dongargarh, covering 84 km.
- Gujarat & MP: Development of 3rd and 4th lines between Vadodara–Ratlam, stretching 259 km.
- MP: Establishment of 4th line on Itarsi–Bhopal–Bina corridor, covering 84 km.
Connectivity: The approved multi-tracking project will enhance connectivity to approximately 3,633 villages, which are having a population of about 85.84 lakh and two Aspirational Districts (Vidisha(MP) and Rajnandgaon(Chhattisgarh)).
Prominent destinations: The project provides rail connectivity to prominent destinations such as Sanchi Stupa(MP); Satpura Tiger Reserve(MP); Hazara Falls(MP); Bhimbetka Rock Shelters(MP); and Nawegaon National Park (Maharashtra). etc. attracting tourists from across the country.
Sustainability: These initiatives of Railways are expected to generate an additional freight traffic capacity of 78 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).
- The initiatives will lower oil imports by approximately 28 cr litres and cut CO₂ (Carbon dioxide) emissions by about 139 cr kilograms (kgs), equivalent to planting six cr trees.

DRDO launches IRSA 1.0 standard to build compatibility in Military Services Communication
In October 2025, the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), in collaboration with the Integrated Defense Staff (IDS) and the Tri-Services (i.e., Indian Army(IA), Indian Navy(IN) and Indian Air Force(IAF)), formally released ‘Indian Radio Software Architecture (IRSA) standard 1.0 ’ to enable interoperability in Military Communication, during the National workshop organized at DRDO Bhawan in New Delhi, Delhi.
- Dr Samir V Kamat, Secretary of Department of Defense Research and Development(DD R&D) and Chairman DRDO was the Chief Guest of the event. Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, Chief of Integrated Defense Staff(CISC), and Dr Rajat Moona, Director IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) Gandhinagar, Gujarat were the Guests of Honour.

ILO’s State of Social Justice Report 2025: Inequality and Decline of Trust in Institutions Hinders Social Justice WorldwideIn September 2025, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) released its latest report titled ‘The State of Social Justice 2025: A work in progress’, highlighted that the world is wealthier, healthier and better educated than in 1995, progress remains uneven, with inequality reduction stalling and benefits not equally shared.
- The report was released ahead of the 2nd World Summit for Social Development(WSSD) scheduled to be held in Doha, Qatar in November 2025.
Key Progress:
Child Labour: The report showed that Child labour among those aged between 5-14 years, has decreased from 250 million (1995) to 106 million (2024).
- Also, the rate of child labour has declined from 20.6% (in 1995) to 7.8% (in 2024).
Poverty Rates: The report showed that extreme poverty rate decreased from 4 in 10 people (in 1995) to 1 in 10 (in 2023).
- It further showed that working poverty declined significantly to 6.9% (in 2024) compared to 27.9% (in 2000).
School Completion Rates: Since 2000, school completion rates in primary and secondary schools increased by 10% and 22%, respectively.
Persistent Deficits:
Poverty: The report showed that despite decrease in poverty rates, 800 million people still live on less than USD 3 per day.
Access to Clean Water: As per the report, 1 in 4 people still lacks access to safely managed drinking water.
Wealth and Income: The report highlighted that top1% of the world’s population holds 20% of income and 38% of wealth.

RBI links Bharat Connect, FX-Retail to facilitate dollar transactionsIn October 2025, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Deputy Governor (DG) T. Rabi Sankar, launched a pilot on the linkage of FX (Forex)-Retail platform of the Clearcorp Dealing Systems (India) Ltd. (Clearcorp) with the Bharat Bill Payment System (Bharat Connect).

Launch Place: The pilot was launched in the ‘Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2025’ at the Jio World Convention Centre, Mumbai, Maharashtra.
Purpose: The linkage will allow individual customers with bank accounts at participating banks to register and transact on the FX-Retail platform through the banks’ digital channels and via Third Party Application Providers (TPAPs).
Pilot mode: The pilot is being made available to the customers of Axis Bank, Federal Bank, ICICI Bank, State Bank of India (SBI) and Yes Bank.
- The customers of these banks can access FX-Retail through CRED and Mobikwik applications to purchase (United States) US Dollar against the Indian Rupee on a ‘value cash’ basis.
- The platform supports transactions for foreign exchange outward remittances, loading of foreign exchange cards, and physical delivery of foreign currency notes.
- Additionally, the customers of Federal Bank and SBI can also access FX-Retail through the internet banking applications of these banks

RBI Cancelled Licence of Satara-based Jijamata Mahila Sahakari Bank
In October 2025, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cancelled the banking licence of Jijamata Sahakari Bank (based in Satara, Maharashtra), Urban Co-operative Bank (UCB), due to the bank’s poor financial position and failure to comply with regulatory norms under the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.
- Following the cancellation of licence, the bank has been restricted from carrying on any business activities with effect from the close of business on October 07, 2025.

Liquidation: As per RBI directions, every depositor will receive deposit insurance claim amount of his or her deposits of maximum Rs 5 lakh from Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC).

World Bank Raised India’s GDP Growth Forecast to 6.5% for FY26; Lowered GDP for FY27 to 6.3%In October 2025, the World Bank (WB) has released its latest bi-annual report ‘South Asia Update October 2025: Jobs, AI, and Trade’. The report has raised India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) forecast to 6.5% for Financial Year 2025-26 (FY26) which is 20 basis points (bps) higher compared to its previous estimate of 6.3%.
- The report highlighted that India is expected to remain the world’s fastest-growing major economy driven by robust consumption, enhanced farm output, and rising rural wages.
- The report further projected that India would surpass China to become the single largest source of energy demand by 2050.

- As per the report, South Asia’s growth is projected to remain robust at 6.6% in CY25, which will slow down to 5.8% in CY26.
GDP for Other South Asian Countries: The report has projected growth rate for other South Asian nations: Bangladesh at 4.8% (CY25); 6.3% (CY26); Nepal (2.1% and4.7%); Sri Lanka (3.5% and 3.1%); Bhutan (7.3% and 6.1%); and the Maldives (3.9% and 4%), respectively.

Background:
Origin : The idea of World Cotton Day was proposed in 2019 by four sub-Saharan African cotton producers: Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, and Mali, collectively called the Cotton Four, who suggested to the World Trade Organization (WTO) that 7 October be celebrated as World Cotton Day.
UN Recognition: In August 2021, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted resolution A/RES/75/318, officially declaring 7 October of every year as World Cotton Day.
First Observance: The first-ever World Cotton Day was celebrated on 7 October 2021.
2025 Events:
Global Event: On October 7, 2025, the WCD 2025 event, held with the theme “ The Fabric of our Lives” at Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN(FAO)headquarters in Rome, Italy, focused on cotton sector challenges and opportunities. In October 2025, the Government of Madhya Pradesh (MP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Fira Barcelona International a leading Spanish organization specializing in convention and exhibition management, to develop and operate a world-class Convention Centre in Bhopal(MP).
- The MoU was signed at the Kushabhau Thakre International Convention Centre in Bhopal, MP, in the presence of MP Chief Minister (CM) Dr. Mohan Yadav.
