9th Sri Lanka-India Naval Exercise ‘SLINEX-21’ begins in Visakhapatnam, AP

The 9th edition of Sri Lanka-India Naval Exercise, ‘SLINEX-21’, a Bilateral Maritime Exercise is being held at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh (AP) from March 7-10, 2022 between Indian Navy (IN) and Sri Lanka Navy (SLN). SLINEX is conducting in two phases, the Harbour Phase at Visakhapatnam on March 7-8, and Sea Phase on March 9-10 in the Bay of Bengal.

• It aims at enhancing inter-operability, improving mutual understanding and exchanging best practices for multi-faceted maritime operations between both navies. 
• The 8th edition of SLINEX-20 was conducted off Trincomalee, a port city of Srilanka in October 2020.

• Other participants from IN include INS Jyoti, a Fleet support tanker, Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH), Seaking and Chetak Helicopters and Dornier Maritime Patrol Aircraft.

Key Points:
i.The Harbour Phase includes professional, cultural, sporting and social exchanges.
ii.The Sea Phase include surface and anti-air weapon firing exercises, seamanship evolutions, aviation operations, including cross deck flying, advanced tactical manoeuvres and special forces operations at sea.
iii.This exercise caters to India’s policies of ‘Neighbourhood First’ and ‘Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR)’.
iv.The military exercise between India and Sri Lanka is Mitra Shakti.

MoS MSME Bhanu Pratap Singh Verma Launched 2022 International Summit on Plastics Recycling & Waste Management

On 4th March 2022 Union Minister of State for Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Bhanu Pratap Singh Verma inaugurated 2-day 2022 International Summit on Plastics Recycling & Waste Management, organised by Ministry of MSME in association with the All-India Plastics Manufacturers’ Association (AIPMA) from 4th to 5th March, 2022 at New Delhi, Delhi, India.

• The Ministry of MSME also launched two special initiatives, ‘Sambhav’ and ‘Svavlamban’ to promote entrepreneurship amongst youth, especially in aspirational Districts all across India.

i.The Mega International Summit emphasises on ‘Know your Waste and how Recycling is the right thing to do, which is to be done in a right way’.
ii.The summit will be attended by more than 350 MSMEs physically and more than 1000 MSMEs virtually from all over India including international delegates from different countries.

i.As part of the Iconic Week Celebrations under Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, Ministry of MSME is conducting Sambhav- National Level Awareness Program (NLAP) in Webinar Mode from 28th February 2022 to 31st march 2022 in 1300 colleges across India through its field offices
ii.The ministry also launched Svavlamban a special drive under which more than 200 Nukkad Natak has been organised in 46 Aspirational Districts in order to promote entrepreneurship amongst youth population and spreading awareness on Schemes of Ministry of MSME and its Initiatives.

Central Govt approved continuation of Swatantrata Sainik Samman Yojana till FY26

On March 7, 2022, the Central Government has approved the continuation of Swatantrata Sainik Samman Yojana (SSSY) for Financial Years 2021-22 to 2025-26. The total outlay SSSY is Rs 3,274.87 crore.

• Under SSSY freedom fighters and their eligible dependents are given pension and other financial benefits, till 2025-26.

Key Points:
i.The proposal for continuation of the SSSY was received from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA)  under Union Minister Amit Shah.
ii.The Central government is committed to remember the sacrifices of freedom fighters during the year of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
iii.Presently, there are 23,566 SSSY beneficiaries across India. The amount of pension has been revised from time to time and Dearness Relief (DR) is also given since August 15, 2016.

IAF Postpone Its Firepower Demonstration Ex Vayu Shakti

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has decided to postpone its firepower demonstration, Exercise Vayu Shakti, which was scheduled to be held in Pokhran ranges in Rajasthan on 7th March 2022. The reason for deferring the exercise was not disclosed. 

• IAF’s 148 aircraft were scheduled to demonstrate their capabilities at Exercise Vayu Shakti.
• The postponed dates will be intimated subsequently. The last edition of Vayu Shakti was held in February 2019.

Exercise Vayu Shakti takes place at Pokhran range every three years to demonstrate its readiness to conduct full-spectrum operations.

RBI Launches UPI for feature phones ‘UPI123Pay’ and 24*7 helpline ‘DigiSaathi’On 8th march 2022 the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) launched two landmark initiatives UPI123Pay and DigiSaathi.

• With the new facility, both smartphone and feature phone holders can now easily transact digitally.

Key points:
i.UPI123PAY for feature phones will have all of the necessary smartphone features. This initiative will improve digital payments to a higher level, paving the way for a cashless economy.
ii.DigiSaathi will help customers address queries in the digital payments umbrella including cards in two languages – english and hindi and also working towards all vernacular languages.

RBI releases booklet ‘BE(A)WARE’ on modus operandi of Financial Frauds

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI)  released a booklet titled “BE(A)WARE”. It provides information on the common modus operandi used by fraudsters and precautions to be taken while carrying out various financial transactions.
i.The booklet will  enhance public awareness about financial frauds perpetrated on innocent customers. 
ii.It also provides  safeguards against commonly used fraudulent techniques like  SIM swaps, vishing/phishing links, lottery,  fake loan websites and digital apps etc. 
iii.According to the Ombudsman Offices & Consumer Education and Protection Cells (CEPCs) of RBI,  sharing of confidential information by the customers, knowingly or unknowingly is one of the major causes leading to the financial frauds in India.

IPC banned Russian, Belarusian athletes from Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympics over Ukraine crisis

International Paralympic Committee(IPC) has banned the athlete’s entries from the Russian Paralympic Committee(RPC) and National Paralympic Committee(NPC) Belarus (83 athletes from Russia and Belarus which hosted troops for Moscow’s attack) for the Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympics due to the war in Ukraine. 

• Previously IPC has stated that the athletes from both countries would be allowed to compete as neutrals in the games.
• The IPC joins range of sporting bodies like Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), Union of European Football Associations(UEFA) etc, that have banned the participation of Russians and Belarusians, which includes football, track, basketball, hockey, and others.

Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympics scheduled to take place from 4th to 13th March 2022 & it marks the 13th Winter Paralympic Games.

Former Pakistani President Rafiq Tarar passed away

Veteran politician, former Supreme Court judge and President of Pakistan, Rafiq Tarar passed away at the age of 92 years due to prolonged illness. 
i.Muhammad Rafiq Tarar was born on 2 November 1929 in  Peer Kot, Pakistan.
He served as a Supreme Court judge from 1991 to 1994.

•  He also served as the Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court from 1989 to 1991.

ii.Later, he became Pakistan’s  President for the period of  1997 to  2001.

International Women’s Day 2022 – March 8 

The United Nations (UN)’s International Women’s Day (IWD) is annually observed across the globe on 8th March to recognise women’s achievements regardless of divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic, or political. 

• The theme of International Women’s Day (IWD) 2022 is “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”. The theme calls for climate action for women by women. 

i.The Ministry of Women and Child Development (MoWCD) celebrated International Women’s Day Week from 1st to 8th March 2022 as an ‘Iconic Week’ as a part of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’. 
ii.On the eve of International Women’s Day, MoWCD, Ministry of Education(MoE) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) partnered and launched the landmark ‘Back to School’ campaign – “Kanya Shikhsa Pravesh Utsav” to bring back out of school adolescent girls in India to the formal education and/or skilling system.

Himachal CM presents ~Rs 51,365 crore Budget for 2022-23; MLALAD fund raised to Rs 2cr

i.The Chief Minister (CM) of Himachal Pradesh (HP), Jai Ram Thakur who also holds the state’s finance portfolio, tabled ~Rs 51,365 crore State Budget 2022-23 in the state Assembly, HP. It was his 5th and last budget for the fiscal 2021-22 of the current Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government.
ii.FY23 budget focuses more on the poor and social security.
iii.No new tax has been proposed in the Budget.
iv.An 8.3% growth rate for HP is forecasted in FY22 after contracting in 2020-21 and registering a negative growth of 6.2%.
v.An increase in the Member of Legislative Assembly Local Area Development (MLALAD) fund from the existing Rs 1.80 crore to Rs 2 crore is proposed in the budget. This has been increased by Rs 20 lakh.

Finance Minister Of Telangana Proposed Budget For The Year 2022-23

The Finance Minister (FM) of Telangana Harish Rao presented the budget of Rs 2.56 lakh crore for the financial year 2022-23. The budget focused on infrastructural development of the state, healthcare, security and agriculture.
i.The budget includes revenue expenditure of Rs 1,89,274.82 crore and capital expenditure of Rs 29,728.44 crore.
Proposals Of The Budget For The Financial Year 2022-23:
i.Infrastructure:

• Rs 3,330 crore allocated to Palle Pragathi, or transformation of villages and Rs 1,394 crore allocated to Pattana Pragathi or development of towns.

ii.Agriculture:

• The total cultivated area in Telangana has been increased from 1.31 crore acres in 2014-15 to 2.09 crore acres in 2020-21 with the help of Mission Kakatiya, irrigation projects and Rythu Bandhu with the total of Rs 50,448 crore.
• The Telangana government waives crop loans up to Rs 75,000.

Other Schemes:
i.Reduction in the age limit for social security (Aasara) pensions from 65 years to 57 years
Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) And Per Capita Income:
i.The Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) for the year 2021-22 shows a growth rate of 19.1% at Rs 11,54,860 crore against Gross domestic product (GDP) (national) growth rate of 8.9%.

Rajasthan Govt. comes up with a new policy to promote cattle rearing

The Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot has announced the launch of ‘Camel Protection and Development Policy’ in the Budget 2022-23.

• Ever since the State Govt. of Rajasthan had declared Camel (Camelus dromedarius) as its State Animal in 2014, there had been a steady decline in its population.
• To address this issue, a new policy for rearing, protection, and overall development of the state animal is proposed with a budget of Rs 10 crore in the next financial year by the CM of Rajasthan.

Some Statistics on Camels in India:
i.About 85% of the country’s camels are found in Rajasthan followed by Gujarat, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh.
ii.The total Camel population in the country is 2.5 Lakhs in 2019, decreased by 37.1% (reduction of 1.5 lakhs) over previous Census of about 4 lakhs in 2012.
iii. According to the 2019 animal census, the number of camels in Arunachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Meghalaya and Nagaland officially fell to zero, while in 2012, these states had 45, 03, 07 and 92 camels respectively.
iv.According to the information given in the Parliament, the number of camels in Rajasthan in 2012 was 3,25,713 which reduced to 2,12,739 marking a reduction of about 1,12,974 (i.e.,34.69% decrease).
Steps taken by Rajasthan Govt. to protect its Camels:
Besides making it the state animal, it has also made
i.Rajasthan Camel (Prohibition of Slaughter and Prohibition of Temporary Migration or Export Regulations) Act to stop its slaughter and prohibit its temporary migration out of the state.
ii.A dedicated National Research Centre on Camel (NRCC), Jorbeer, Bikaner, Rajasthan.

Chhattisgarh CM launches ‘Kaushalya Matritva Yojana’ for safe Motherhood

On 7 March 2022, the Chief Minister (CM) of Chhattisgarh  Bhupesh Baghel in Raipur launched the ‘Kaushalya Matritva Yojana’ by handing cheques of Rs 5,000 each to five women beneficiaries for the safe motherhood practices.
Note- International Women’s Day is observed on 8 March. 
Key points:
i.It aims to help women financially for the nutrition of themselves and their child after pregnancy. It will also prevent female foeticide.
ii.Under this scheme, financial assistance of Rs 5000 will be provided to women for  bringing up their second girl child. 

• The entire expenditure of this scheme will be borne by the Chhattisgarh government . 

iii.In the event the CM also released the books-  ‘Kanya Vivah Yojana’ Coffee Table Book, Sakhi One Stop Center Telephone Directory, and brochures of schemes related to women empowerment.

Microsoft to Set up its Datacentre in the Region in Hyderabad, Telangana; 4th Data centre in India

Microsoft Corporation(Microsoft) announced its intent to establish its latest datacenter region in Hyderabad, Telangana. This will be Microsoft’s largest datacenter investment in India. The Hyderabad datacenter region, the 4th datacentre in India, will be an addition to the existing network of three regions in India across Pune, Mumbai, and Chennai.

• This investment is in line with Microsoft’s commitment to supporting customers thrive in a cloud and Artificial intelligence (AI) -enabled digital economy and become part of the world’s largest cloud infrastructure.
• This will also be one of the largest foreign direct investments (FDIs), that the state of Telangana has attracted. 

About the Hyderabad Datacentre: 
i.The new data centre region in Hyderabad will spread across three sites: Chandanvelly, Ellikatta, and Kottur.
ii.Over the next 15 years, Microsoft will spend over Rs 15,000 crore on the project. 
iii.A data centre region essentially means a set of data centres spread across a wide expanse of land.
iv.The datacentre will deliver advanced data security and cloud solutions that will help enterprises, start-ups, developers, education, and government institutions.
v.This will offer the entire Microsoft portfolio across the cloud, data solutions, AI, productivity tools, and customer relationship management (CRM) with advanced data security, for enterprises, start-ups, developers, education, and government institutions.
Key Points:
i.This is in line with Microsoft’s commitment to strengthen India’s economic resurgence and evolution as an important innovation hub. 
ii.This will also be one of the largest foreign direct investments (FDIs) the state has attracted.

The Chief Minister Of TN Inaugurated India’s Largest Floating solar power project At Thoothukudi

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M. K. Stalin inaugurated India’s largest floating solar power plant constructed at a cost of Rs 150.4 crore. The floating plant is established in Southern Petrochemicals Industries Corporation Limited (SPIC) factory at Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu to provide clean energy.
Aim:
It aims to provide environmentally sustainable power generation and to reduce carbon footprint. 
i.The floating power plant has the capacity to produce 42 million units of electricity per annum.
ii.The solar power plant is owned by Greenam Energy, a wholly-owned subsidiary of AM International.
iii.It is the SPIC’s part of Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) progress, to produce renewable energy.
Note: TN Chief Minister MK Stalin also laid the foundation stone for India’s first international furniture park spread over 1,156 acres at Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu.

ii.The 48-acre floating solar power plant has been set up on a large water reservoir that spans 62-acres. The solar arrays are placed on floating structures on a water body. 
iii.The plant provides the energy to the SPIC and Greenstar fertilisers factories.
iv.The 25.3 MegaWatt Direct Current / 22 MegaWatt Alternate Current floating solar power plant project aligns with their strategy to implement new-age green and sustainable technology. 
v.The solar panels on the water reduces the evaporation upto 60 percent.
