Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh Inaugurates ‘National Biobank’ at CSIR-IGIB for Personalised HealthcareOn July 6, 2025, Union Minister of State (MoS) (Independent Charge, IC) Dr. Jitendra Singh, Ministry of Science & Technology (MoS&T) and Vice President (VP) of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), inaugurated the “National Biobank” at the CSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB) in New Delhi (Delhi).
- This state-of-the-art facility marks India’s first longitudinal health database, designed to support personalized treatment plans while encompassing India’s wide-ranging diversity.
About National Biobank:
i.The Biobank will collect comprehensive genomic, lifestyle, and clinical data from 10,000 individuals across India’s diverse geography, ethnicity, and socio-economic backgrounds.
ii.The initiative draws inspiration from the United Kingdom (UK) Biobank, but it has been specifically designed to address India’s unique health challenges, including the high prevalence of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and rare genetic disorders.
iii.It will support early disease diagnosis, targeted therapies, and research on gene-environment interactions, such as the widespread issue of central obesity in seemingly lean individuals.
Scientific Significance of Biobank:
i.The Biobank is a part of the Phenome India Project, a long-term study that will track the health trajectories of individuals over several years. It is expected to help scientists understand gene-environment interactions, disease patterns, and treatment responses specific to the Indian population.
ii.The data generated will enable Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven diagnostics, development of Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR)-based therapies (such as for sickle cell anaemia) and support for drug development tailored to Indian health needs.

TN Becomes India’s First State to Implement Predictive Death Model for TB PatientsIn July 2025, Tamil Nadu (TN) became the first state in India to implement a predictive death model for Tuberculosis (TB) patients, aiming to reduce mortality by identifying severely ill patients at the time of diagnosis and facilitating early admission to hospitals.
- The model is integrated into the existing TB SeWA (Severe TB Web Application) system under the Tamil Nadu – Kasanoi Erappila Thittam (TN-KET) initiative.
i.Developed by: Indian Council of Medical Research – National Institute of Epidemiology (ICMR-NIE), Chennai (TN), a permanent premier institute of the ICMR, Department of Health Research (DHR), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).
ii.Dataset used: Records of over 56,000 TB patients diagnosed in public health facilities across TN (July 2022 – June 2023)
Puducherry Becomes First to Implement TB Screening under FAP
In July 2025, Puducherry became the first Union Territory (UT) to integrate Tuberculosis (TB) screening under the Family Adoption Programme (FAP), mandated by the National Medical Commission (NMC), MoHFW in 2022 as part of Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME).
- The initiative is supported by Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) (Puducherry) and the State TB Cell of Puducherry, which also implements Verbal Autopsies for identifying causes of TB-related deaths.

World Bank’s Gini Index: India Ranked World’s 4th Most Equal SocietyIn April 2025, World Bank (WB) released its report titled ‘Spring 2025 Poverty & Equity Brief’, ranking India as the world’s 4th-most equal country with a Gini Index score of 25.5 (2022-23), compared to 28.8 (2011-12).
- India has been ranked just behind Slovak Republic (24.1), Slovenia(24.3) and Belarus (24.4).
i.India performed well compared to advanced economies like: China (35.7), the United States of America (USA) (41.8), the United Kingdom (UK) (32.4) and all Group-7 (G-7) as well as G20 countries.
ii.As per the WB’s report which has covered the data of 167 countries, only 30 countries including India, have been placed into the ‘moderately low’ inequality category, which includes GI scores between 25 and 30.
iii.The report also highlighted that 171 million India were moved out of extreme poverty between 2011 and 2023.

Colombia and Uzbekistan Join BRICS-Backed NDB as New MemberOn July 5, 2025, Colombia and Uzbekistan have joined the New Development Bank (NDB), a multilateral development bank, also known as the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) bank, as borrowing members of the NDB, expanding its membership to 11 nations.
- The announcement was made by NDB President Dilma Rousseff following the 10th Annual Meeting of the NDB Board of Governors (BoG), held ahead of the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
- The current members of the NDB include Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Bangladesh, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Egypt, Algeria, Colombia, and Uzbekistan. Uruguay holds the status of a prospective member.
Key Points:
i.Colombia and Uzbekistan were admitted to the NDB after meeting key criteria: they are United Nations(UN) member states, completed the accession process, including Board approval, depositing accession instruments, and fulfilling capital contributions, and their inclusion ensured the BRICS nations retained over 55% of the total voting power.
ii.During the meeting, Roman Serov(Russia) was appointed as Vice-President of NDB from September 7, 2025, to September 6, 2030.
iii.The Board elected Anton Siluanov, Minister of Finance, Russia and the NDB Governor for Russia as the next Chairperson of the BoG.
iv.Nirmala Sitharaman,Minister of Finance(MoF), the Government of India(GoI) and the NDB Governor for India was elected as the next Vice-Chairperson of the BoG.

India Becomes World’s 4th Largest Biofuel Consumer in 2024, Topped by USAIn July 2025, The 74th edition of the Statistical Review of World Energy (2025), released by the London (United Kingdom, UK)-based Energy Institute (EI) in collaboration with Kearney and KPMG, reported that India became the world’s fourth-largest biofuel consumer in 2024, surpassing China for the second consecutive year.
- India’s biofuel consumption has expanded at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 31.8% between 2014 and 2024, reflecting the country’s strong focus on renewable energy as the world’s third-largest energy consumer.
Key Findings:
i.India’s biofuel consumption rose by 40% Year-on-Year(Y-o-Y) to 77,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (kbbloe/d) in 2024.
- In contrast, China’s biofuel consumption grew at a slower 18% Y-o-Y, reaching 60 kbbloe/d, as China continued to export biodiesel to European and Asian markets.
ii.Globally, biofuel demand climbed by 3% Y-o-Y in 2024, reaching a record 2.2 million barrels per day (Mbbloe/d).
iii.The report highlighted that the United States of America (USA) remained the world’s largest biofuel producer and consumer.
- Following the USA, Brazil and Indonesia ranked as the next largest consumers.
- The USA, Brazil, and Europe combined accounted for approximately 75% of total global biofuel consumption.
iv.The Asia Pacific region experienced the highest growth, adding +47 kbbloe/d, followed by North America, which added +42 kbbloe/d.
- India and Indonesia together accounted for 63% of Asia Pacific’s biofuel demand in 2024.
India’s Production Trends:
i.Despite the remarkable growth in consumption, India continued to lag behind China in production capacity for the 10th consecutive year in 2024.
ii.India’s biofuel production rose 27% Y-o-Y, reaching 70 kbbloe/d, maintaining a 30.4% CAGR since 2014.

Suriname Elected Jennifer Simons as First Female PresidentOn 6th July 2025, the National Assembly of Suriname elected 71-year-old Dr.Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, a physician and former parliamentary speaker, as the first female President of Suriname, a country on the northeastern coast of South America (SA). Gregory Rusland appointed as vice president of Suriname.
- She will be sworn in on 16 July 2025, taking charge during tough economic times and growing hopes linked to Suriname’s upcoming oil boom.
- She will succeed Chandrikapersad “Chan” Santokhi, a Surinamese politician and former police officer who has been serving as the 9th President of Suriname since 2020.
Background:
i.Dr. Jennifer Geerlings-Simons’ opposition National Democratic Party (NDP) secured 18 seats, while the incumbent President Chan Santokhi’s Progressive Reform Party won 17 seats in the May 2025 parliamentary elections. Smaller parties claimed the remaining 16 seats.
- The NDP had formed a coalition with five other parties, collectively holding 34 seats in the parliament.
ii.She was elected by Suriname’s National Assembly, where the President is chosen through a two-thirds majority vote.

i.Dr. Jennifer Geerlings-Simons is a Surinamese physician and politician . She began her political journey in 1996 when she was first elected as a member of the National Assembly, representing the Paramaribo district.
ii.She was reelected multiple times, serving as a Member of Parliament until 2020.
iii.She served as vice-chair and parliamentary faction leader of the National Democratic Party (NDP) from 2000 to 2006.
iv.She became the Chairperson of the National Assembly from 30 June 2010 to 28 June 2020, the second woman to hold this position
v.In 2024, following the passing of Dési Bouterse, Dr. Geerlings-Simons succeeded him as the leader of NDP.

Sanjog Gupta Appointed as CEO of ICC
On 7 July 2025, Indian media executive Sanjog Gupta, currently the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) sports and live experiences at JioStar, was named the CEO of the International Cricket Council (ICC), the global governing body for cricket, with immediate effect. He succeeds Geoff Allardice(Australia), who stepped down as ICC CEO earlier in 2025.
- He becomes the seventh CEO in the history of ICC. This marks the second top leadership position at ICC held by an Indian, following Jay Shah’s election as ICC Chairman in 2024.
i.Sanjog Gupta began his career as a journalist and joined Star India Private Limited in 2010. Over the years, he held multiple leadership roles in content, programming, and strategy, before becoming Head of Sports at Disney Star India Private Limited in 2020.
ii.After the merger of Viacom18 Media Private Limited and Disney Star India Private Limited in November 2024, he was appointed as CEO (Sports & Live Experiences) at JioStar.

McLaren’s Lando Norris Wins F1 British GP 2025On July 6, 2025, Lando Norris (United Kingdom), Formula One (F1) driver representing McLaren, won the F1 British Grand Prix (GP) 2025, officially called the Formula 1 Qatar Airways British GP 2025. The race took place at the Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire, England.
- This was McLaren’s first win at Silverstone since 2008, when Lewis Hamilton won. Norris also became the 13th British driver to claim a win at Silverstone.
- It was Norris’s 8th career win and his 4th victory of the 2025 season.
Key Highlights:
i.The race was heavily impacted by rain and featured two Safety Car deployments and two Virtual Safety Car periods.
ii.Oscar Piastri (McLaren) finished 2nd after received a 10-second penalty for slowing excessively during a Safety Car restart, costing him the lead. Norris inherited first place after Piastri served the penalty.
iii.Nico Hulkenberg (Germany) claimed his first F1 podium in his 239th career start, a record for most races before a top-three finish. He climbed from 19th to 3rd, successfully defending his position against Lewis Hamilton.

- This marked his 10th victory in 12 Grand Chess Tour (GCT) rapid and blitz events and his sixth consecutive tournament win in 2025.
About the SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz Croatia 2025:
i.The tournament was held from 30 June to 6 July 2025 and was the third event of the GCT 2025.
ii.It followed the same format as the Superbet Rapid and Blitz Poland, featuring seven full-tour players along with three wildcards: Magnus Carlsen, Anish Giri, and Croatian Grandmaster Ivan Šarić.
iii.The competition included Rapid and Blitz segments, with a maximum of 36 points available.
iv.The tournament had a total prize fund of USD 175,000.
Key Highlights:
i.Carlsen began the event in third place after the Rapid section, scoring 10 points out of 18. However, he gained momentum in the Blitz games, finishing with a total score of 22.5 out of 36 points.

On July 5, 2025, Neeraj Chopra won gold with the best of 86.18 metre (m) in Javelin throw in the inaugural edition of Neeraj Chopra (NC) Classic 2025, a World Athletics Gold-level event, held at Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
- Neeraj Chopra achieved his best 86.16m on his third attempt, after an initial foul and a throw of 82.99m in the second throw.
i.Julius Yego of Kenya won silver (84.51m) and Rumesh Pathirage of Sri Lanka won Bronze (84.34m).
ii.Despite battling an injury, Indian athlete Sachin Yadav secured fourth place with a throw of 82.33 meters.
iii.The event marks the first World Athletics Gold-level javelin meet held in India.

Former MP and MLA Kunwar Anand Singh Passed Away
In July 2025, Kunwar Anand Singh, former Member of Parliament (MP) from Gonda and former Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of Uttar Pradesh(UP), passed away in Lucknow(UP) at the age of 87.
- He was Born on January 4, 1939, into the 344-year-old Mankapur royal family, which ruled since 1681.
i.He ascended as king in 1964 after his father Raja Raghvendra Pratap Singh’s (Swatantra Party MLA) death, he entered politics and was elected as Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in 1964, 1967, and 1969.
iii.On the advice of former Prime Minister(PM) Lal Bahadur Shastri, he joined the Indian National Congress (INC) and won the Lok Sabha seat from Gonda in 1971, 1980, 1984, and 1989
iv.In 2012, he contested and won from the Gaura constituency in UP Assembly elections and served as the State’s Agriculture Minister in the Samajwadi Party -led government under the former Chief Minister (CM) Akhilesh Yadav.
v.He was Widely known as “UP Tiger”, he was a dominant political figure in eastern Uttar Pradesh, with considerable influence in Gonda district.

World Rural Development Day 2025 – July 6The first-ever United Nations (UN’s) World Rural Development Day (WRDD) is observed across the globe on July 6 to raise awareness among everyone about their role and responsibility for collaborative actions and efforts on integrated rural development as outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- The day also commemorates the establishment of Dhaka (Bangladesh) based Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP) on July 6, 1979.
2025 Focus:
The WRDD 2025 is focussed on “Rural Empowerment – Global Impact,” highlights the crucial role of rural communities, particularly women, Indigenous groups, and youth, in driving agricultural progress, strengthening food security, preserving ecosystems, and promoting inclusive governance.
- The priority themes of WRDD 2025 include Ending Rural Poverty & Hunger, Climate-Resilient Livelihoods, Digital & Financial Inclusion, Empowering Women & Youth, and Infrastructure & Services.
Background:
i.On 6 September 2024, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) unanimously adopted a draft resolution (A/78/L.84/Rev.2) proclaiming July 6 of every year as WRDD.
ii.The resolution was initiated by Bangladesh and supported by a core group of countries comprising India, Nepal, Peru, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, etc.
iii.At least 30 countries co-sponsored the resolution, which was adopted by consensus by the Member States of the United Nations (UN) without voting.

World Zoonoses Day 2025- July 06World Zoonoses Day is annually observed across the world on July 06 to raise awareness about Zoonosis or Zoonotic disease, an infectious disease that is naturally transmissible from vertebrate animals to humans.
- The day aims to prevent the spread of zoonotic diseases, control zoonoses by managing threats for future infections, and promote preventive healthcare practices.
Background:
i.The day commemorates the anniversary of the day that Louis Pasteur, a French chemist, and microbiologist, administered the 1st vaccine for humans against rabies, a vaccine preventable viral zoonotic neuro-invasive disease which is usually fatal.
ii.In July 1885, Louis Pasteur administered the rabies vaccine to save the 9-year-old Joseph Meister who was bitten by a rabid dog.
iii.The event is supported by major health organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH, formerly OIE), and various national governments.

Background:
i.On July 7, 1954, the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU), led by Julius Nyerere, adopted Kiswahili as a unifying language during Tanzania’s struggle for independence.
ii.On July 7, 2000, the East African Community (EAC) was re-established to foster regional cooperation among Kiswahili-speaking nations.
iii.In November 2021, UNESCO, during its 41st session of the General Conference held in Paris (France), adopted Resolution 41 C/61, officially proclaiming 7 July every year as World Kiswahili Language Day.
iv.The first-ever observance of the Day was held on 7 July 2022.

UP Govt to Launch Two New Pilgrimage Assistance Schemes
On July 5, 2025, Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister (CM) of Uttar Pradesh (UP) announced two new Pilgrimage Assistance Schemes, ‘Baudh Teerth Darshan Yojana’ and the ‘Panch Takht Yatra Yojana’ for Buddhist and Sikh devotees.
- Under the two schemes, a minimum of Rs.10, 000 will be provided as assistance to each pilgrim.
i.The Baudh Teerth Darshan Yojana will help Buddhist and Hindu residents of UP undertake pilgrimages to major sites across India, with priority given to Buddhist monks.
ii.The Panch Takht Yatra Yojana will benefit Sikh devotees visiting the five sacred Takht Sahib Sites across India.
- Under the scheme, assistance will be provided to devotees travelling to Anandpur Sahib (Punjab); Akal Takht Sahib (Amritsar, Punjab); Damdama Sahib (Talwandi Sabo, Punjab); Takht Sachkhand Hazur Sahib (Nanded, Maharashtra), and Harmandir Ji Sahib (Patna Sahib, Bihar).
Haryana to Develop Asia’s Largest Jungle Safari in Aravalli Hills
In July 2025, The Government of Haryana announced the development of Asia’s largest jungle safari in the Aravalli Hills to boost eco-tourism and promote wildlife conservation.
- The jungle safari will cover an area of about 10,000 acres in the Aravalli Hills, with 6,000 acres located in Gurugram (Haryana) and 4,000 acres in Nuh (Haryana). It will focus on preserving a wide variety of animals, birds, and natural biodiversity.
i.The project will use modern technology and eco-friendly infrastructure to ensure sustainable tourism.
ii.To advance planning and gather insights, Chief Minister(CM) of Haryana Nayab Singh Saini, Union Minister Manohar Lal, Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and Haryana Environment, Forest and Wildlife Minister Rao Narbir Singh visited the Vantara Wildlife Facility in Jamnagar (Gujarat).
iii.The Forest and Environment Department, Government of Haryana, will work together with the Tourism Department, Government of Haryana, to develop this project and CM Nayab Singh Saini will personally monitoring the project’s progress.
iv.The safari is projected to create substantial employment opportunities for local youth in sectors such as tourism, hospitality, wildlife guiding, and conservation services.
v.The Aravalli Range, one of the oldest mountain ranges in India, spans Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Delhi, covering an area of 1.15 million hectares.
