Cochin Shipyard inks pact with IIT Madras for Marine Start-Up Engagement Program Cochin Shipyard inks pact with IIT Madras for marine start-up engagement programmeAn agreement has been inked between Kerala based Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, Tamil Nadu (TN) to support start-ups in the maritime sector.

  • Under this, CSL will provide financial support to the start-ups up to Rs 50 lakh as seed grants, Rs 1 crore as prototyping grants, and equity funding at the scale up stage.
  • It will provide a platform for young entrepreneurs to develop products/services in the marine space.

Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, and DeepuSurendran, General Manager (C-SAS – Strategic & Advanced Solutions), CSL.
Key Points:
i.This MoU is a part of the start-up engagement program Ushus, launched by CSL to boost the Central Government’s initiatives to encourage and provide technical, regulatory, financial, and marketing support to maritime start-ups by bringing the stakeholders together.

  • CSL has already declared a corpus of Rs 50 crore for our start-up engagement program ‘Ushus’.

ii.IIT Madras will act as one of the implementation partners of this initiative and will provide incubation, mentorship, and training to start-ups selected under this programme.

  • It will invite applications online twice a year to identify start-ups for funding.

iii.Start-ups selected under the scheme will have to be committed on innovation, improvement of products, processes or services, and present a scalable business model with a high potential of employment generation and wealth creation.

SOTR Collections H1FY23: Maharashtra emerged as Largest state with Rs 1,15,211cr CollectionsTamil Nadu pips Karnataka to emerge as the third-largest state in own tax revenues in H1 FY23Maharashtra emerged as the largest state in State’s Own Tax Revenue (SOTR) collections between April-September 2022 i.e. first six months of the current fiscal (H1FY23)with Rs 1,15,211 crore. The provisional data for the SOTR collections was released by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India.

  • Maharashtra is followed by Uttar Pradesh (UP) as 2nd largest state with Rs 1,02,687 crore, and Tamil Nadu (TN) at 3rd with Rs 68,638 crore.

Key Points:
i.Maharashtra registered 42% growth in its own tax revenue collections (year-on-year). The State was followed by Kerala (41%), highest among southern States; TN (36%); Gujarat (31%); and UP (29%).
ii.Notably, TN has displaced Karnataka’s SOTR to emerge as the third largest state in terms of own tax revenue collections in H1FY23. Karnataka’s tax collection was Rs 66,158 crore.

  • Karnataka’s SOTR in H1FY22 stood at Rs 53,566 crore against TN’s Rs 50,324 crore.

iii.TN’s State Excise duty on liquor sales saw the highest growth of 52% to Rs 5,351 crore in H1FY23 against Rs 3,496 crore in H1FY22.

  • Sales tax grew by 32% to Rs 28,214 crore.

iv.Telangana’s SOTR grew by 26% to Rs 50,660 crore, Karnataka recorded 24% growth to Rs 66,158 crore.

  • With a 9% growth rate, Andhra Pradesh (AP) recorded the lowest growth in SOTR among southern States at RS 39,737 crore.

What is SOTR?
Strong SOTR growth is an indicator of healthy state finances as higher own tax revenue collections means lesser dependence on Centre for devolution and grants. It includes revenues earned through State GST (Gross & Revenue Tax), Stamp & registration fees, Sales Tax, State Excise duty, and Land revenue. Some States also levy other taxes.

MNRE Notifies National Bio Energy ProgrammeMNRE notifies National Bio Energy ProgrammeThe Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has notified the National Bioenergy Programme and has extended it from fiscal year (FY) 2021-22 to FY 2025-26.

  • The programme has been proposed for implementation in two phases, and Phase I has been authorized with a financial outlay of Rs. 858 crore.

Sub-schemes Under the National Bioenergy Programme:
i.Waste to Energy Programme (Programme on Energy from Urban, Industrial and Agricultural Wastes /Residues)

  • Objective: To assist in the establishment of major Biogas, BioCNG, and Power plants (excluding MSW to power projects).

ii.Biomass Programme (Scheme to Support Manufacturing of Briquettes & Pellets and Promotion of Biomass (non-bagasse) based cogeneration in Industries)

  • Objective: To assist in the establishment of pellets and briquettes for use in power generation, as well as non-bagasse-based power generation projects.

iii.Biogas Program to assist in the installation of family and medium-sized biogas systems in rural areas.
Key Points:
i.Since the 1980s, the MNRE has promoted bio-energy in India as a way to recover energy from the vast surplus of biomass, cattle dung, industrial waste, and urban bio-waste.
ii.One significant contribution made by MNRE has been the Central Financial Assistance given for the establishment of bioenergy projects, in order to lower their capital costs and interest rates and hence boost project viability.

Hyderabad’s growing green space city hosts India’s largest Miyawaki forest
i.It spreads over an area of 18 acres followed by one in Gujarat, spread over 14 acres.
ii.Spread over 18 acres in Kawaguda near the airport, this forest has 126 species of native fruit and flowering trees and is a bird’s paradise.
iii.This forest gets its name from the technique developed by Japanese botanist and ecologist Dr Akira Miyawaki.
iv.The Stone Craft team has GI-tagged each tree in the forest.

  •  A dance drama based on the life of Raja Rammohun Roy, who is called the father of modern Indian society

i.On May 22, 2022, the Ministry of Culture, Government of India(GOI)  launched a one-year long celebration, on the occasion of the 250th birth anniversary of Raja Rammohun Roy, as part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.
ii.Raja Rammohun Roy Born on May 22, 1772 in Radhanagar, West Bengal, He was the founder of Brahmo Samaj and promoted modern and scientific approach.

UNDP Report: Social, Economic Benefits of a Global Green Revolution at RiskSocial, economic benefits of a global green revolutionAccording to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) report titled “How Just Transition Can Deliver the Paris Agreement,” nations that fail to recognize the opportunities given by a “green revolution” face increased social inequality, civil unrest, and less competitive economy if suggested net-zero emissions paths are not carried out efficiently.

  • The concept of a “just transition” is critical to fulfilling the Paris Agreement’s global climate targets as countries transition to sustainable economies.

The report is released in advance of the UNFCCC (UN Climate Change) Conference of the Parties (COP 27), which will be held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Arab Republic of Egypt, from November 6-18, 2022.
The Report: How Just Transition Can Deliver the Paris Agreement
The report examines both enhanced short-term climate pledges, referred to as “nationally determined contributions” (NDCs), and long-term strategies in which governments explain their plans for net zero emissions.
i.As of October 31, 2022, 170 nations had submitted an upgraded NDC, and 65 (38%) of those countries explicitly include just transition.
ii.The ratio of developed to developing nations is nearly equal (51% vs 49%), with Central and Eastern Europe leading the way, followed by the Americas and the Caribbean, and Africa. Asia-Pacific and Arab countries fall behind.

  • These new funds opened on 28th October 2022, and closes on 9th November 2022.
  • Objective – To provide investment returns that correspond to the total returns of the securities before expenses, as represented by the Nifty IT Index and Nifty Private Bank Index.

Key highlights:
i.HDFC Nifty IT ETF captures the Global IT demand and requirements through India’s leading IT companies and benefits from tech spending including the growth of cloud computing.
ii.While, HDFC Nifty Private Bank ETF captures the potential of private banks which benefits from India’s economic growth and offers exposure to sector peers and valuations below long-term averages.
iii.Both the funds consist of the 10 largest stocks in their respective sectors listed on the NSE, and are rebalanced semi-annually in March and September.

Netherlands Emerges as Top Buyer of Indian Petro-Products Exports Amid Ukraine warNetherlands turns top buyer of Indian petro-products amid Ukraine warThe Netherlands has emerged as the top destination for India’s petroleum product exports such as petrol and diesel in the first half of FY22. Amid the Ukraine war, India continued to buy discounted crude oil from sanctions-hit Russia.

  • India is a key Asian refining hub, with an installed capacity of nearly 250 million tonnes per annum across 23 refineries.

Key highlights:
i.The emergence has resulted in Netherlands becoming the 3rd biggest market for India’s overall exports, replacing China.
ii.In addition, South Africa and Brazil also increased their refined petroleum product purchases including Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) from India, making it to the top 10 petroleum product export markets for Indian refiners.
iii.The Netherlands accounted for nearly 9% of India’s total petroleum product exports in April – September 2022 at Rs. 4.5 trillion with a growth of 180% corresponding to the same period in FY21.
Other exporters:
i.Brazil entered into the top 8 export market for India with a 273% growth in petroleum product exports at USD 2.3 trillion in April-September 2022.
ii.South Africa rose to become India’s 13th largest export market accounting for a 324% growth in petroleum exports to USD 2.6 trillion during the same period.

  • It accounted for 5.13% of total petroleum shipments in the first half of FY22, as against 2.23% share in FY21.

iii.Russia emerged as India’s 5th largest import source in the first half of FY22, accounting for 5.62% of India’s total imports, to USD 21.3 trillion with a year-on-year growth of 409%.

  • Russian oil accounted for 15% of India’s total petroleum imports at USD 14 trillion in the first half of FY22.

iv.China has been dropped to 4th position, accounting for just 3.3% of India’s total overall petroleum shipments.

Chennai 1: AdaniConneX launches, hyperscale Data Centre in Chennai

AdaniConneX, a joint venture(jv) between Adani Enterprises and EdgeConneX, has set up ‘Chennai 1’ a 17 Mw data centre campus at Sipcot IT Park in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
Objective – To build 1 GW(Gigawatt) Green Data Center platform.
i.It is Tamil Nadu’s first pre-certified Indian Green Building Council(IGBC) Platinum Rated data center and will be powered with 100% renewable energy.
ii.In the first phase, the campus will have a capacity of 17 MW (IT Load) which will be increased up to 33 MW(megawatt) at full capacity.
iii.‘Chennai 1’ is designed for physical protection to IT Infrastructure with seven layers of security system and to provide 99.999 percent availability.
iv.AdaniConneX is also building hyperscale campuses in all the big cities including Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Noida, Pune, Kolkata, Bhubaneshwar, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Vishakapatinam.
v.Data center capacity of India is around 600 MW at present and is expected to grow 1300 MW by 2024.

Highlights:
i.Secretary General of IMO Kitack Lim handed over the commendations at the annual Bravery Awards Ceremony held in London.

  • The award was received by Vikram K Doraiswami, Indian Naval Advisor, High Commission of India (HCI), London on behalf of the Indian Navy.

ii.They were honoured in recognition of ‘exceptional courage’ displayed by the sailors of INS Kochi, INS Kolkata and Greatship Ahalya in rescuing 261 personnel, including 18 casualties on board the accommodation barge P-305, following its collision with an oil rig during Cyclone Tauktae.

Google Launches a Platform to Forecast Flood – ‘FloodHub’Google launches ‘FloodHub’Google launched the new FloodHub, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) flood forecasting platform that displays flood forecasts and shows the area and time where floods could occur to help people at risk and provide information to aid organisations and governments.

  • The coverage of floodhub is expanded to 18 countries across Latin America, Africa and Southeast Asia: South America (Brazil and Colombia), Sub-Saharan Africa (Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Guinea, Malawi, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Angola, South Sudan, Namibia, Liberia, and South Africa), and South Asia (Sri Lanka).

Note: Google used an AI technique called “Transfer Learning” to make it work in areas where there is less data available.
Key highlights:
i.Google launched its first flood forecasting services supported by AI in India in 2018 to help combat the catastrophic damage from floods.
ii.In the first three years (2018-2020), Google has expanded its programme to cover much of India and Bangladesh in partnership with the Indian Central Water Commission and with the Bangladesh Water Development Board, covering an area with about 220 million people and sending out 40 million potentially life-saving alerts.

  • In 2021, it further expanded its system to cover an area with over 360 million people.

iii.Until now Google has sent 115 million flood alert notifications to 23 million people over Google Search and Maps, using new AI models based on satellite imagery.
Note – Google has also extended its wildfire tracking program to few countries after piloting it in the United States (US).

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard launches New Satellite-Carrying Rocket: Ghaem 100 

On 5th November 2022, Iran’s paramilitary, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reported the successful suborbital launch of a new satellite-carrying rocket, Ghaem-100.  The flight test of the launcher using the Rafe solid-fuel vehicle was completed successfully.

  • Ghaem-100, a 1st ever 3 -stage solid-fuel launcher, can place satellites weighing up to 80 kilograms (Kg) into orbit 500 kilometres (Km) above the Earth’s surface.
  • This is the first sub-orbital stage of the rocket.

Key Points:
i. The new satellite-carrying rocket will be used to launch Iran’s Nahid satellite for the Ministry of Telecommunications.
ii. Like Iran’s nuclear programmes, its satellite programme is targeted at scientific research and other civilian applications.
iii. The US Government is concerned that the same long-range ballistic technology used to lift satellites into orbit could also be used to launch nuclear bombs.

  • Tehran has consistently denied having such intentions.

The Hylo Open is an international badminton tournament held at Saarlandhalle in Saarbrücken, Germany Since 1988, which has been sponsored by the Saarbrücken-based eye lubrication company Hylo.

  • The 2022 Hylo Open was held from 1st November 2022 to 6th November 2022, with a total prize pool of USD 180,000 and has been categorised as a Super 300 event.

Anthony Sinisuka Ginting Wins Men’s Singles & Han Yue Wins the Women’s Singles Title
On 6th November 2022 Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, the star shuttler from Indonesia won  HYLO Open 2022, to bag his 2nd title of the season by defeating third-seeded Chou Tien-Chen (Chinese Taipei) in Saarbrucken, Germany.

  • The 22-year-old Han Yue from the People’s Republic of China has won the 2022 HYLO Open  Women’s singles title by defeating Zhang Yi Man in the final.

Lu Ching Yao and Yang Po Han Wins Men’s Doubles Title
Taiwan badminton players Yang Po-han and Lu Ching-yao won the 2022 HYLO Open men’s doubles titles after defeating Lee Jhe-huei and Yang Po-hsuan in the finals.

  • This victory is Yang Po-han and Lu Ching-yao pair’s first title win after their triumph at the 2016 Prague Open.

Benyapa Aimsaard and Nuntakarn Aimsaard Wins women’s doubles; Kidambi Srikanth Loses in Semi Finals
i.The Thailand pair Benyapa Aimsaard-Nuntakarn Aimsaard won the women’s doubles, after defeating the Indian pair Gayathri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly.
ii.The world no. 11, Kidambi Srikanth has lost the men’s singles semifinal, which marks his 4th semi final defeat of the year 2022.

  • Earlier, he lost in the last-four stage at the Swish Open in March 2022, Korea Open in April  2022 and Commonwealth Games in August 2022.

2022 Paris Masters: Denmark’s Holger Rune wins his 1st Paris Masters Single’s Title; Koolhof-Skupski Wins Men’s Double Title

On 6th November 2022, Denmark’s Holger Rune(19 years old) defeated the Defending champion Novak Djokovic (Serbia) and won the singles tennis title at the 2022 Rolex Paris Masters (professional men’s tennis tournament ) at the Accor Arena in Paris, France from 28th October to 5th November 2022.

  • This marks his maiden Paris Masters title as well as his first-ever Master 1000 title.

Note: In 2021, Novak Djokovic won his 6th Rolex Paris Masters title, previously he won the title in 2009, 2013, 2014, 2015 & 2019.

About Paris Masters: 

i.The 2022 Rolex Paris Masters is the 9th and final ATP(Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000 event of the season.
ii.Paris Masters was first held back in 1986 and the first winner was Germany’s Boris Becker, at the age of 18 years and 11 months.
iii.The Rolex Paris Masters is run by the French Tennis Federation,

Key Points:

i.With this win, Holger Rune made a jump of eight spots to become the new World No. 10 on ATP ranking.
ii.Holger Rune became the first-ever player from Denmark to feature in the Top 10 of the ATP Rankings.
  • Rafael Nadal (18) and Carlos Alcaraz (18) were the only active players to break into the Top 10 at an age younger than 19.
  • He joins Alcaraz who is the youngest man to lead the ATP computerized rankings since they began in 1973.

iii.This is the first time since May 2007, that 2 teenagers, World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune (No. 10), are in the top 10.

iv.Holger Rune also beat four other top-10 players including Hubert Hurkacz, Andrey Rublev, Carlos Alcaraz and Felix Auger-Aliassime en route to the final.

Koolhof-Skupski Beats Dodig-Krajicek to Win Men’s Double Title
On 6th November 2022, Netherlands’s Wesley Koolhof and United Kingdom’s Neal Skupski defeated Croatia’s Ivan Dodig and United States’s Austin Krajicek to win the doubles title at the 2022 Rolex Paris Masters.

  • This marks their 7th title and 3rd Masters trophy of the season.
  • Previously they won the 2022 Mutua Madrid Open(Madrid, Spain) and National Bank Open(Montreal, Canada)
  • With this win, Wesley Koolhof becomes the World No.1 in the ATP Doubles Rankings for the first time and Neal Skupski rose to a career-high No.2.

BWF Para-Badminton World Championships: Pramod Bhagat won Gold in Men’s Singles & Silver in Men’s doubles

Pramod Bhagat(Odisha), an Indian Para-badminton player, won the Men’s Singles (SL3) title (gold) defeating compatriot Nitesh Kumar in the finals at the Hulic Daihatsu BWF (Badminton World Federation) Para-Badminton World Championships 2022 held from 1st to 6th November 2022 in Tokyo, Japan.

  • Nitesh Kumar(Haryana) won the silver in Men’s Singles SL3 event.
  • Pramod Bhagat & Manoj Sarkar(Uttarakhand) won the Silver medal in Men’s Double SL3 event.

Manisha Ramadoss (Tamil Nadu) won the gold medal in the women’s singles (SU5) title defeating Mamiko Toyoda of Japan in the finals.

“E. K. Janaki Ammal: Life and Scientific Contributions” New Book About E. K. Janaki Ammal by Nirmala James

Retired school teacher Nirmala James has authored a new book titled “E. K. Janaki Ammal: Life and Scientific Contributions”, featuring the life and remarkable achievements of Edavalath Kakkat Janaki Ammal (E. K. Janaki Ammal), India’s first woman botanist.  The book, published by Enview Research and Development, was released during the event organised on the 125th birth anniversary of E. K. Janaki Ammal. She was born on 4th November 1897 in Thalassery, Kerala.

  • The event was organised by the Centre for Biodiversity Conservation (CBC) under the Botany Department, University of Kerala.
  • The book describes how Dr Janaki Ammal fulfilled her professional dreams despite the gender and caste barriers. She is well known for her work in the areas of cytogenetics and plant breeding.

Nirmala James has authored around 25 books including books for children

National Cancer Awareness Day 2022 – November 7National Cancer Awareness Day 2022 - November 7National Cancer Awareness Day is annually observed across India on November 7 to emphasise the importance of the disease and raise awareness about its diagnosis, treatment, and early identification.

  • According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide.

i. Dr Harsh Vardhan, the former Indian Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, declared in September 2014 that November 7 of each year would be observed as National Cancer Awareness Day to raise awareness about early detection and the avoidance of cancer-causing behaviours.
ii. The 1st National Cancer Awareness Day was observed on 7th November 2014.
Note: National Cancer Awareness Day coincides with the birth anniversary of the Nobel Prize winner (for Physics in 1903), Marie Curie (Marie Salomea Skłodowska–Curie, 1867), a scientist from Poland.

CV Raman Birth Anniversary 2022 – November 7CV Raman Birth Anniversary – November 7 2022The birth anniversary of the Nobel Prize Winner & Bharat Ratna awardee, Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman (CV Raman) is annually commemorated on 7th November.

  • 7th November 2022 marks the 134th birth anniversary of CV Raman.
  • CV Raman, an Indian Physicist, is well known for his discovery of the Raman effect, the phenomenon of change of wavelength of light when a beam is scattered in a medium.

About Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman:
i. Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman was born on 7th November 1888 in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu and passed away on 21st November 1970 in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
ii. In 1907, he completed his master’s degree in physics at Presidency College, University of Madras, and then worked as an accountant in the Indian Government’s finance department.
iii. In 1917, he became a professor of physics at the University of Calcutta. In 1924, he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society.
iv. In 1933, he became the 1st director of the Indian Institute of Science,
v. In 1948, he established the Raman Research Institute on property donated by the Government of Mysore in Bengaluru.
Awards and Recognition:
i. Nobel Prize in Physics 1930 was awarded to CV Raman for his work on the scattering of light and for the discovery of the effect named after him, the Raman Effect.

  • He discovered the Raman Effect on 28th February 1928. The Raman effect is the shift in the wavelength of light caused by molecules deflecting a light beam.

ii. In 1929, King George V of Great Britain knighted him and titled him, Sir C.V. Raman.
iii. In 1954, CV Raman was awarded the inaugural Bharat Ratna for his outstanding service to the country in the field of physics along with Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan and Chakravarti Rajagopalachari.

Kerala becomes 1st State to Introduce Uniform Gold Price Based on Bank RateKerala becomes the First State to Introduce Uniform Gold PriceKerala became the first Indian state to launch a uniform price on 916 purity 22 carat gold based on the bank rate. This means the jewellers in Kerala now charge the same price as the bank rate for gold.

  • The decision for the same was taken during a meeting between officials of Malabar Gold and Diamonds, and key members of All Kerala Gold and Silver Merchants Association.

Key Points:
i.This launch of standardized gold rate will safeguard the interest of the consumers and bring in price transparency to the trade.
ii. It should be noted that the Bank rate on gold is the same across India, however, in most states, gold is priced Rs.150-300 per gram extra over the bank rate.

  • In Kerala, gold used to be sold at different prices on a particular day.

iii.In September 2022, Alappuzha has became the 5th fully Digital Banking District in Kerala.
iv.In August 2022, Kerala launched “Kerala Savari”, the government’s own e-taxi service, an alternative to the corporate online cab service. This is also the first such initiative by any state government in India.
