‘Global Trade Outlook and Statistics’ by WTO: Global Trade May Grow 1.7% In 2023 Despite War Global trade may grow 1.7% in 2023According to the “Global Trade Outlook and Statistics” report released by the World Trade Organization (WTO) the merchandise trade volume is expected to grow by 1.7% in 2023, up from October 2022 estimate of 1.0%.

  • The pace of trade expansion in 2023 is still likely to be slow, hampered by the ongoing war in Ukraine, consistently rising inflation, tighter monetary policy, and financial uncertainty.

The volume of world merchandise trade had a 2.7% growth in 2022, which was weaker than the WTO’s October 2022 forecast of 3.5%.
Key Points:
i.According to the WTO’s trade forecasts, real global GDP growth at market exchange rates is projected to be 2.4% in 2023.

iii.In 2024, trade growth is anticipated to rebound to 3.2% as GDP growth accelerates to 2.6%.
iv.However, the forecast is more unpredictable than normal due to the presence of significant downside risks, including rising geopolitical tensions and global food insecurity.
v.The revised projection for 2023 is due to factors such as the easing of COVID-19 pandemic regulations in China, which is likely to relieve accumulated consumer demand in the country, boosting international trade.
Key Statistics:
i.In 2023, North America (3.3%) is projected to have the highest growth rate for merchandise exports of any WTO region, followed by the CIS (2.8%), Asia (2.5%), and Europe (1.8%).
ii.West Asia and South America are predicted to have slower export growth 0.9% and 0.3%, respectively, while exports of goods from Africa are projected to decrease (-1.4%).
iii.The estimated GDP growth for Europe has been revised up by 0.7% points, while the expected GDP growth for Asia has been revised down by 0.4% points.
iv.Global commodity prices contributed to a 12% increase in the value of international merchandise trade to USD 25.3 trillion in 2022.
v.In 2022, the value of world trade in commercial services rose 15% to USD 6.8 trillion.
vi.Exports of digitally delivered services amounted to USD 3.82 trillion in 2022.
