GoI Approves Modernisation Plan-IV for CAPFs with a financial outlay of Rs 1,523 croreGovernment led by Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has approved the scheme - Modernisation Plan-IV for Central Armed Police Forces

The Government of India (GoI) has approved ‘Modernisation Plan-IV for Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs)’ scheme to improve the overall operational efficiency and preparedness of the CAPFs with a financial outlay of Rs 1,523 crore. 

  • The Ministry of Home Affairs under guidance of Union Home Minister, Amit Shah will implement the scheme from 1st February 2022 to 31st March 2026.
  • This approval was made as a continuation of ‘Modernisation Plan-III for CAPFs’.

About the Scheme:
i.CAPFs will be equipped with modern state-of-the-art weapons and equipment according to their operational requirement and deployment pattern in different theatres.

  • Upgraded Information Technology (IT) solutions will also be provided to CAPFs.

ii.The scheme boosts the government to address the challenges faced on the International Border, Line of Control (LoC) and Line of Actual Control (LAC) and also in areas affected by Left Wing Extremism, Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and insurgency affected North Eastern States.

India’s 1st Indigenous TCAS ‘Kavach’ to avoid Rail Accidents successfully tested by Indian RailwaysIndigenous anti-collision system 'Kavach'

i.On March 4, 2022, The indigenously-developed India’s first Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), “Kavach” was successfully tested by Indian Railways. The test was conducted between Gullaguda-Chitgidda Railway stations on Lingampalli-Vikarabad section in Secunderabad Division of South Central Railway while onboard the locomotive, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Ministry of Railways; and Vinay Kumar Tripathi, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Railway Board .
ii.This system will help the Railways achieve the goal of ‘zero accidents’ as it enables the trains to stop on their own if the digital system notices any manual error like jumping of the red signal or any other malfunction.

On 4th March 2022, Reliance Industries Limited(RIL) opened Jio World Centre, ‘first of its kind’ India’s largest and most prestigious multi-faceted destination in Bandra Kurla Complex(BKC), Mumbai, Maharashtra. The centre was envisioned by Nita Ambani, Director of Reliance Industries and Founder-Chairperson of Reliance Foundation. 

  • The Jio World Convention Centre at Jio World Centre, India’s largest Convention Centre has ‘hybrid and digital experiences’ enabled by the 5G network. 
  • RIL also dedicated Dhirubhai Ambani Square and lotus inspired ‘Fountain of Joy’ to the city of Mumbai at the Jio World Convention Centre.

NHforEV Constructs India’s first Green Charging Station in the PipelineIndia’s first green charging station in the pipelineNational Highway for Electric Vehicle (NHforEV), an organisation for promoting electrification of India’s transportation systems is constructing first of its kind ‘green charging hub’ along the Jaipur-Delhi-Agra E-highway.

  • The new initiative is unique in a way of using green construction techniques for such Electric Vehicle (EV) stations with net zero carbon infrastructure.
  • Aim – To reduce carbon footprint to zero or move towards net-positive and also replaces petrol pumps in the future

About the charging station:
i.The charging station will have a restaurant, coffee lounge, a bank, an Automated Teller Machine (ATM), a showroom and other amenities for the customers to use while their vehicle is charging.
ii.The area will be incorporated with solar panels to provide renewable energy and the green patches will be accessible to the people as green terraces or playing fields.
Keynote:
i.In 2022, two electric vehicle (EV) charging stations were inaugurated in Gurugram, Haryana.

  • The two charging stations, one in Sector 52, and the other in Sector 86, can charge more than 1,500 cars in one day.

ii.30 more e-highway charging stations will be constructed in 90 days from their date of allocation to Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) or private entities.

Pakistan continues to remain on FATF’s grey list Pakistan continues to remain on FATF's grey list

The global money laundering and terrorist financing watchdog, Financial Action Task Force (FATF), retained Pakistan in the grey list and asked the country to work on money laundering investigations and prosecutions.

  • The decision has been taken after the conclusion of the four-day FATF Plenary from March 1-4, 2022.The event took place in hybrid mode from Paris, France.
  • FATF also added the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to its grey watchlist.

Key Points:
i.Pakistan has been on the grey list of FATF since June 2018 for failing to check money laundering, and terror financing. It was given a plan of action to complete it by October 2019 but it fails to comply with the FATF mandates.
ii.Pakistan is now targeting the full completion of the 2021 action plan on anti-money laundering and combating terror financing by the end of January 2023.

i.On March 3, 2022, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has exempted the investments made in Umbrella Organization (UO) by Primary (Urban) Co-operative Banks (UCBs) from non-Statutory Liquidity Ratio (non-SLR) holding limits prescribed in Paragraphs 2(i) and 2(iii)(b) of the RBI’s circular ‘Investments in Non-SLR securities by Primary (Urban) Co-operative Banks dated 30thJanuary, 2009.
ii.Paragraph 2(i)- Non-SLR investments should be limited to 10% of a bank’s total deposits as on March 31 of the previous year. 
iii.Paragraph 2(iii)(b)- Investments in unlisted securities should not exceed 10% of the total non-SLR investments at any time.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh Launched AI Readiness Program, Developed by DST & Intel India

On the occasion of National Science Day 2022 (28th February 2022), Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister of State(MoS) (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Science and Technology(MoST), launched the Artificial intelligence (AI) Readiness Program – “Building AI Readiness among Young Innovators”, developed by Department of Science and Technology (DST) under the Ministry Of Science And Technology (MoST) in partnership with Intel India. 

Building AI Readiness among Young Innovators:
Building AI Readiness among Young Innovators is a part of the series of efforts made to skill the next generation of India with a digital-first mindset. 
Aim:
The AI Readiness Program aims to build digital readiness among the students from classes 6 to 10, enrolled under DST’s ‘Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) -Awards MANAK (Million Minds Augmenting National Aspirations and Knowledge) scheme. 
Features:
i.Under the AI Readiness program, students will be introduced to the basics of AI and its multiple domains – computer vision, natural language processing, statistical data, etc.
ii.The students will explore domain-specific concepts and python programming through extensive hands-on learning sessions.
iii.Students will be provided access to relevant content, learning resources, with adequate hand-holding, and mentoring
Key Points:
The AI Readiness program will be launched in three different phases across India.
Phase 1: A certificate of participation will be given to students upon completion of virtual orientation sessions in the 1st phase.
Phase 2: the participant’s ideas for their AI-based solutions out of which the top 200 entries will be shortlisted. 

  • The shortlisted participants will attend a boot camp to deep dive into AI with Intel AI for Youth coaches and domain experts.
  • The students will create AI-based projects and submit their final projects.

Phase 3: the Top 50 projects will be shortlisted by an independent committee of experts for the 3rd phase.

  • Ministry of Law and Justice issued a notification regarding the approval of his appointment by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), stating that he will serve the Chair for a period of 4 years from the date of assumption of charge of the post, or till attaining the age of 70 years, or until further orders, whichever is the earliest. 
  • The conditions of his service will be governed by the provisions of the Tribunals Reforms Act, 2021 and the Tribunal (Conditions of Service) Rules, 2021.

i.He was appointed as Chief Justice of Delhi High Court on June 7, 2019 and is now given the Chair of TDSAT, days before his retirement on March 12, 2022. 
ii.Prior to Delhi HC, he served as Acting Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court and also served as Judge of Jharkhand High Court and Gujarat High Court.

DRDO Developed MMICs Onboard EOS 04 DRDO Developed MMICs Onboard EOS 04

On 4 March 2022, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) developed Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits (MMICs), which will be used in radar imaging satellite modules of EOS 04 (Earth Observation Satellite – 04).

  •  EOS 04 was launched by ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization)  on 14th Feb 2022. 

Key points:
i.Various MMIC  were developed and produced at Solid State Physics Laboratory (SSPL) DRDO and Gallium Arsenide Enabling Technology Centre (GAETEC) foundry of DRDO.
ii.MMIC  is a type of integrated circuit, it operates at microwave frequencies. Their function is to perform  microwave mixing, power amplification, low-noise amplification, and high-frequency switching.
iii.The Transmit/Receive Modules (TR-Modules) used in the payload for Radar imaging developed using these MMICs. More than 30,000 modules produced at GAETEC foundry for various space missions.

Indian Navy successfully test-fires Brahmos cruise missile from INS ChennaiNavy successfully test-fires BrahMos cruise missile from INS Chennai

On 5 March 2022, the Indian Navy successfully tested the accuracy of an extended range of Brahmos supersonic cruise missile from the stealth destroyer INS Chennai.
Key points:
i.In 2020, India successfully test fired the anti-radiation Rudram-1 missile. It was the  first indigenously developed anti-radiation missile of India. 
ii.Both Brahmos missile and INS Chennai are indigenously built and highlight the cutting-edge of Indian missile and ship-building prowess. 

  • INS Chennai is a  stealth guided missile destroyer of the Indian Navy constructed by the Mazagon Dock Limited at Mumbai.

About Brahmos Missile:
i.BrahMos is a joint venture between the Defence Research and Development Organisation of India (DRDO) and the NPOM of Russia.
ii.It  flies at a speed of 2.8 Mach or almost three times the speed of sound. It has a range of 290 km (as per Missile Technology Control Regime (MTOCR) regulations) and can carry a 200-kg warhead.
iii.It can be launched from land, sea, sub-sea and air against surface and sea based targets.

Glycosmis albicarpa : New Gin Berry Species Discovered in Kanyakumari Wildlife Sanctuary, TNNew gin berry species discovered in southern Western Ghats

A team of scientists from the Botanical Survey of India (BSI) led by Kanjiraparambil Arjunan Sujana(KA Sujana) have discovered a new species of Gin Berry, named Glycosmis albicarpa, from the Kanyakumari Wildlife Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu(TN). The new species with distinct large white fruit is identified to be endemic to the Southern Western Ghats. 

  • The findings of the new species are published in the latest issue of the Nordic Journal of Botany, published from Sweden. Ragesh Gopala Vadhyar is the co-author.

Discovery:
The new species was found in Tirunelveli semi-evergreen forests at the Panagudi forest section of the Kanyakumari Wildlife Sanctuary.
Features of Glycosmis albicarpa:
i.The new species Glycosmis albicarpa, an evergreen small tree, belongs to the family Rutaceae (Orange family).
ii.The new species have short and broadly lanceolate leaves, short (3–5 mm long) peduncles, clawed petals and broadly ovoid white fruits.
iii.The berries of Glycosmis species have the unique characteristic of ‘gin aroma’ and have gained in popularity as an edible fruit. 
iv.It is also a larval host plant for butterflies like other species of Glycosmis.
v.Threat: habitat modification causes a major threat to the survival of this species.

Australian Cricket’s Legendary Spinner Shane Warne Passed Away At The Age Of 52Shane Warne, Australia's legendary legspinner, dies aged 52Shane Keith Warne, the legendary Australian spinner has passed away at the age of 52 in Koh Samui, Thailand. He was born in Ferntree Gully, Victoria, Australia. He had also contributed towards the victory of the ICC World Cup for the Australian Cricket team in the years – 1995/96 (Wills World Cup) and 1999 (ICC World Cup).
i.To honour Shane Warne the Australian Cricket Board decided to rename the Great Southern Stand as “Shane Warne stand” in Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
Achievements Of Shane Warne:
i.Warne was named one of the Five Cricketers of the Century by Wisden Cricketers (stands 4) ‘Almanack in 2000.

  • Sir Donald Bradman stands first in Wisden Five Cricketers of the Century.

ii.Warne was named as one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year in the 1994 Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack.
iii.He captained Rajasthan Royals and led them to win the inaugural Indian Premier League (IPL) title in 2008.
iv.He was a part of five Ashes-winning teams during his career (Debut 1992 – Last test 2007).
v.He is the overall leading wicket-taker in Ashes (195wickets).
vi.He is the Second Highest International wicket taker of all time (Test – 708, ODI – 293)
vii.At the end of the 2003–04 season, both Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan (Sri Lanka) had broken the record (519) for Test wickets set in 2001 by Courtney Walsh of the West Indies.

Former Army Chief General Sunith Francis Rodrigues passed awayFormer Army Chief Gen Sunith Francis Rodrigues passes away

The former Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Sunith Francis Rodrigues, aged 88, passed away in Goa on March 4, 2022. The Military Thinker and a Strategist has held some of the prestigious posts in Military and Public Offices of India. He was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra in 1933.
General Sunith Francis Rodrigues’ Timeline:
Military Offices:
i.He was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the Indian Army on 28 December 1952 and retired as General (COAS) on 30 June 1993, spanning 40 years of service in the Indian Army.

  • The 15th Chief of the Army Staff (India) from 1 July 1990 – 30 June 1993.
  • The 32nd Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee from 1 August 1991 – 30 June 1993.

ii.He played a vital role along with the Indian force during the Sino-Indian War – 1962, Indo-Pakistan War – 1965, Indo-Pakistan War – 1971.
iii. He was honoured with Military Awards like Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM), 25th Anniversary of Independence Medal and various such awards.
iv.He was also influential in inducting women into the Indian Army in 1991, initiating an important step towards empowering women to serve their country.
Public Offices:
i.He was the 26th Governor of Punjab and 13th Administrator of Chandigarh holding the offices from 16 November 2004 – 22 January 2010. He was appointed by the then President of India A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

NSE Partners with Telangana Government to Fuel Growth of MSMEsNSE joins hand with Telangana govt to fuel growth of MSMEsOn 4th March 2022 National Stock Exchange(NSE) of India Limited, a leading stock exchange collaborated with the Telangana government to encourage and support the MSMEs (Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises) of the state for listing.

  • Listing facilitates better access to capital for their future growth story, enhances credibility and visibility at national level and supports unlocking valuation.

About the collaboration:
i.NSE with the support of the Telangana government will conduct awareness drives through seminars, camps, knowledge sessions, road shows and workshops to guide corporates in fundraising on NSE Emerge platform.

  • On its part, the state government (Telangana) will facilitate MSMEs to get listed on NSE Emerge by considering ways to reimburse certain expenses incurred on fund raising with a predefined upper limit.
  • The state will also set up a government-sponsored equity participation fund to invest in the fast-growing Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) on the exchange platform.

Telangana’s effort towards ease of doing business:
i.The Government of Telangana has been a forerunner in providing ease of business for MSMEs.

  • It has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the NSE to enable SMEs to list on the NSE Emerge platform to raise capital and scale up their business globally.

ii.At present, 241 companies from various sectors are listed on SME Emerge with over Rs 3,683 crore total funds raised on the platform. 

  • The platform has 10 companies from Telangana.

Blue Cross of India & Four Paw Launched India’s 1st mobile Ambulance for Street Animals in Chennai, TN

The Blue Cross of India, a Chennai-based animal welfare charity, has launched a “first-of-its-kind” mobile ambulance for street animals in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, in collaboration with the international animal welfare organisation Four Paw.

  • The Stray Animal Care programme, the ‘hospital on wheels’ with a veterinarian, for the street animals was launched by Justice Dr Anitha Sumanth of the Madras High Court(HC). 

Key Points: 
i.The hospital on wheels will provide on-site treatment for sick and injured street animals and only the animals that cannot be treated on-site will be transported to the hospitals. 
ii.The initiative will be supported by the charity’s rescue-call service.
iii.The ambulance will also have a para-veterinary-worker-cum-driver. 
Features of the ambulance:
i.The ambulance will have a treatment table, an inverter, two fans, a fridge and drawers to keep bandages and sterile products and it will also have the provision for administering IV (intravenous) fluids and oxygen.
ii.It will also have a washbasin, an anti-skid shock-absorbing mat, a retractable doctor’s seat, a stretcher trolley, a retractable tarpaulin, two movable cages for holding dogs, dog-catching equipment and overhead cupboards.

  • Once the project gets complete, it will  become the first village to be completely powered with solar panels by a foundation. 

Key points:
i.The collaboration will set up a 450 KW solar rooftop project that will be used to supply power around 350 houses and public areas such as anganwadis, gram panchayat and other areas.
ii.The project is  undertaken under Shri Govindbhai Dholakia’s Mentorship.
iii.The SRKKF  is the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm of Shree Ramkrishna Exports, a diamond company. The  foundation is providing  free wi-fi services, healthcare, medical infrastructure and service to Dudhala.

Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia Inaugurated Delhi Teachers University 

On 5th March 2022, Manish Sisodia, Deputy Chief Minister(CM) and Education Minister of Delhi inaugurated the Delhi Teachers University at Outram Lane in Mukherjee Nagar, North West Delhi, Delhi. It is Delhi’s first of its kind university.
The University was established with an aim to prepare well-trained and highly qualified teachers.
Vice Chancellor: 
Prof. Dhananjay Joshi has been appointed as the Vice Chancellor of the newly formed Delhi Teachers University
Background:
i.In January 2022, the Delhi Assembly passed a Bill for setting up a world-class teachers’ training university which would offer programmes like B.Ed, M.Ed, Phd and certificate programmes.
ii.The bill was introduced in the House by Manish Sisodia.
Delhi Teachers University:
i.The Delhi Teachers’ University, spread over 12 acres of land in Bakkarwala village, Delhi, will have lecture halls, digital labs and a library with world-class facilities for 5000 students.
ii.The Delhi Teachers University will ensure that teacher-trainees in the university spend 30-50% of their time in schools and get hands-on learning experience from the very first month of their course.
iii.The university will partner with the schools to provide hands on experience for the teacher trainees.
iv.The university will focus on preparing school teachers and teachers of higher education institutes.
