Reliance Foundation Signed MoU with INCOIS For Coastal Community Empowerment
The Reliance Foundation and the Hyderabad (Telangana) – based Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Government of India (GoI), have signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to empower the inhabitants of coastal areas.
- Reliance Foundation and INCOIS will work to leverage ocean data, enhancing climate resilience and disaster mitigation under this collaboration.
- Reliance Foundation aims to reach nearly 25% of active marine fishermen families in India, primarily in eight states.
- Reliance Foundation supports women in linkage and availing of schemes to increase returns from fish production and other high-value fishing activities.
- Furthermore, promoting sustainable practices in the blue economy by linking INCOIS’s multi-hazard vulnerability maps with resilience activities, and implementing the ‘Tsunami Ready Villages’ program to safeguard coastal communities from tsunamis.
DoT Introduces New Mobile Number Series For Service & Transactional Calls
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has introduced 160 series for making service and transactional voice calls.
- It aims to help Indian citizens easily identify legitimate calls and reduce unsolicited calls from telemarketers using the 10 digit mobile numbers.
- This 160 series will replace the 140 series, which is currently used by telemarketers for making promotional, service, and transactional calls, but the 140 series will continue to be used for promotional calls.
- The new 160 series will provide a clear differentiation between legitimate service and transactional calls and spammers, making it easier for customers to manage their communication.
- It will be available for use by all Telecom Service Providers (TSP).
- The DoT has also proposed that telecom operators should use the Do Not Disturb (DND) feature of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to block unwanted promotional calls.
INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS
IAF Participates in ‘Red Flag 24-2’ Exercise in Alaska,USAThe Indian Air Force (IAF) has landed its most advanced fighter aircraft, Rafale, at the Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, United States of America (USA), to participate in the multinational Red Flag 24-2 exercise.
Key Points:
i.The Red Flag-Alaska 24-2 will be a two-week military exercise, which commenced on 30th May 2024 and ends on 14th June 2024.
ii.IAF has deployed 8 Rafale fighters, three C-17 transport aircraft and two IL-78 mid-air refuelling aircraft to Eielson Air Force Base.
iii. The IAF will gain valuable experience by training with one of the best combat aircraft and weapon systems. This is the first time the IAF Rafael will train with the F-35 stealth fighters.
About Red Flag Alaska:
i.The Red Flag exercise is a multinational exercise designed to replicate a realistic and challenging environment.
ii.It brings together aircrew and equipment from different nations and different services.
iii.There are two distinct Red Flag exercise locations at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada and in Alaska.
iv.The exercise in Nevada is organised by the United States Air Force Warfare Center (USAFWC).
v.The first Red Flag exercise in 2024 is called 24-1, which was exclusively for the US Air Force.
vi.The exercise in Alaska is organised by the Pacific Air Forces (PACAF), the air component command of the United States’ Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM).
Note: The Indian Navy also deployed its indigenous stealth frigate INS Shivalik for Ex RIMPAC (Rim of the Pacific), scheduled to be held in Hawaii, USA from 25th June to 2nd August 2024.

OECD Report: Developed Countries Provided USD 115.9 Bn Climate Finance for Developing Countries in 2022 According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development’s (OECD) report, Climate Finance Provided and Mobilised by Developed Countries in 2013-2022, developed countries provided and mobilised USD 115.9 billion as climate finance for developing countries in 2022.
- This exceeds the annual USD 100 billion goals for the 1st time, surpassing the target by over 15%.
- This report is the OECD’s 7th assessment of progress towards the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) goal, agreed in 2009.

NSO Released Provisional Estimates of Annual GDP for FY24 & Quarterly Estimates of GDP for Q4 of FY24On 31st May 2024, National Statistical Office (NSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) released the Provisional Estimates (PE) of Annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the FY24 (2023-24) and Quarterly estimates of GDP for Q4 (January-March) of FY24, both at Constant (2011-12) and Current Prices.
Key Points:
i.Real GDP at Constant Prices is set to reach a level of Rs 173.82 lakh crore in FY24, against the First Revised Estimates (FRE) of GDP for the FY23 of Rs 160.71 lakh crore.
ii.Real GDP is expected to grow at 8.2% in FY24 as compared to the growth rate of 7.0% in FY23(2022-23).
i.India’s GDP growth rate in Q4FY24 grew by 7.8% and Gross Value Added (GVA) is estimated to grow at 6.3%.

India Received Maximum FDI from Singapore Followed By Mauritius in FY24: GoI dataAccording to the latest data released by Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India (GoI), India received the highest Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) from Singapore in FY24 (2023-24) despite FDI equity inflows into the country decreased by about 3.5% in FY24, from USD 46.03 billion (FY23)to USD 44.42 billion(FY24) due to global economic uncertainties.
i.Mauritius emerged as the 2nd biggest investor in India, with investment of USD 7.97 billion in FY24, followed by United States of America (U.S.A.)(USD 4.99 billion), Netherlands (USD 4.93 billion), Japan (USD 3.17 billion), the United Arab Emirates (UAE) (USD 2.9 billion), Germany (USD 505 million), and Cayman Islands (USD 342 million).
ii.The total FDI saw a negligible decrease of 1%, from USD 71.35 billion (in FY23) to USD 70.95 during FY24.

Bloomberg Billionaires Index: Gautam Adani Ranked 11th Richest Globally & Became Asia’s Richest Person
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index (as of 1st June 2024), Gautam Adani, the Founder and Chairman of the Adani Group is now ranked the 11th richest globally, with a net worth of USD 111 billion. With this, he has reclaimed the title of Asia’s richest person after a surge in the stock prices of his conglomerate’s companies.
- This surge enabled him to overtake Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), who ranked 12th with a net worth of USD 109 billion.
- According to the index, Adani’s net worth has increased by USD 26.8 billion while Ambani’s wealth has increased by USD 12.7 billion.
- Adani Enterprises, the group’s flagship company, reported revenue of USD 17 billion in the year to March 31, 2023.

- The Bloomberg Billionaires Index is a daily ranking of the world’s richest people.

India’s 1st UN Woman Permanent Representative Ruchira Kamboj RetiresOn 1st June 2024, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, India’s first Woman Permanent Representative(PR) to the United Nations (UN), retired after over 35 years of distinguished service.
- She served as India’s PR to the UN in New York, the United States of America(USA) from August 2022 to June 2024.
About Ruchira Kamboj:
i.Ruchira Kamboj is a Indian Foreign Service (IFS) Officer of 1987 batch. She started her diplomatic career as the 3rd Secretary in India’s Embassy to France(1989 to 1991).
ii.From 1991–96, she served as Under Secretary in the Europe West Division of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India (GoI).
iii.From 1996 to 1999, she served as 1st Secretary (Economic and Commercial) and Head of Chancery at the Indian High Commission in Port Louis, Mauritius.
iv.From 1999 to 2002, She served as Deputy Secretary and later Director in charge of Foreign Service Personnel and Cadre in MEA, one of the longest-serving tenures in this crucial administrative role.
v.She served as Counsellor at India’s Permanent Mission to the UN from 2002 to 2005 and as India’s Consul General in South Africa from 2006 to 2009.
vi.She has served as the Deputy Head of the Office of the Secretary-General at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London(the United Kingdom) and as India’s Chief of Protocol from 2011 to 2014. She was the first and only woman to hold this position.
vii.She has also served as the Ambassador to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) from 2014 to 2017.
viii.Between 2017 and 2019, she served as the High Commissioner of India to South Africa, with concurrent accreditation to the Kingdom of Lesotho.
ix.In 2019, she was appointed as the 18th Ambassador of India to Bhutan and became the 1st woman diplomat to hold the post.
Businesswoman Halla Tomasdottir Elected as New President of IcelandIcelandic businessperson, Halla Tómasdóttir, an Independent Candidate, has became the 7th President of Iceland by winning the 2024 presidential election with 34.3% of the votes. Halla Tomasdottir take over as President of Iceland on 1st August 2024.
- She will succeeds Guðni Thorlacius Jóhannesson, who has been serving as the 6th President of Iceland since 2016.
- She will become the 2nd Woman President of Iceland after Vigdis Finnbogadottir, who was the first woman in the world to be democratically elected as president in 1980.
2024 Presidential Election:
i.The 2024 Presidential Election was held on 1st June 2024.
ii.Halla Tomasdottir won the presidential election defeating Katrina Jakobsdottir, Iceland’s former Prime Minister (PM), who finished 2nd with 25.2% of the votes and Halla Hrund Logadottir, Director of Energy Affairs at Orkustofnun, with 15.5% of votes.
Note: Previously, Halla Tomasdottir contested in the 2016 Presidential election in 2016 and finished 2nd with nearly 30% of the vote.

About Career Achievements of Dinesh Karthik :
i.Dinesh Karthik became a public figure after his aerial stump of Michael Vaughan in England when he was under Sourav Ganguly in 2004.
ii.He made his national debut at the age of 19 in a One-Day International against England at Lord’s. In his 401 T20 appearances, Karthik retires with 7407 runs, including 34 half-centuries, at a strike-rate of nearly 137.
iii. In his 17 years of IPL career, Karthik played for six franchises. He started his session in 2008 with the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and moved to Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings – 2011), Mumbai Indians (2012-13), Gujarat Lions (2016-17), Kolkata Knight Riders (2018-21) and RCB (2015, 2022-present).
iv.He ended up his IPL career with a total of 4,842 runs in 257 matches (joint second-most with Rohit Sharma), along with 22 fifties.
v.The Tamil Nadu cricketer has represented India in 180 games across three formats in which he scored 3463 runs with a lone Test hundred and 17 half-centuries. He also has 172 dismissals in his name along with a total of 151 catches and 21 stumpings.
vi.Karthik scored 1,752 runs and nine half-centuries in 94 ODI matches. In Tests, he achieved a score of1,025 runs in 26 Tests. In T20Is, he scored 686 runs in 60 games.
vii.He last represented India during the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia against Zimbabwe under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma. In his cricket career, he has also played under Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virat Kohli.

i.The Bonn International (Yonex Bonn International) is an annual international badminton tournament held in Bonn, Germany. The inaugural edition of the tournament was held in 2019.
- The 2020 and 2021 editions were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
ii.The tournament is part of the BWF’s Future Series and a part of the Badminton Europe Elite Circuit.
iii.The tournament, organised by the Badminton-Club Beuel 1955 e.V., is approved by the Badminton Europe and the BWF.
Taiwan Athletics Open 2024: India won 7 Medals Including 3 GoldIndian contingents won 7 medals including 3 Gold, 3 Silver and 1 bronze at the Taiwan Athletics Open 2024 held in Taipei Municipal Stadium, Taipei City, Taiwan from 1st to 2nd June 2024.
- Taiwan Athletics Open 2024, sanctioned by the World Athletics, was organised by the Chinese Taipei Athletics Association.
Winners from India:
i.Indian athlete Nayana James won the gold medal in the women’s long jump event with a 6.43m jump. Japan’s Sumire Hata from Japan won the silver medal and South Korea’s Yu Jeongmi won the bronze medal.
- This marks Nayana James’ 4th podium of the 2024 season. Previously, She won the gold medal in the women’s long jump at the 3rd Indian Open Jumps Competition held in March 2024. she also won the gold medal in the Women’s long jump at the Federation Cup in May 2024.
ii.Indian track and field athlete Devarakeshavi Prakasha (DP) Manu won the gold medal in the men’s javelin throw event by recording a distance of 81.58 meters.
- Chinese Taipei’s Cheng Chao-tsun, who holds the asia record of 91.36 meters, settled for silver with 76.21 m and his compatriot Huang Chao-hung won bronze with 71.24 m.
- This also marks Manu’s third podium of the season. he previously won the gold in Indian Grand Prix 1 in April 2024 and silver in the Federation Cup in May 2024.
iii.India’s Ankesh Chaudhary won the gold medal in men’s 800m after clocking 1:50.63 and compatriot Somnath Chauhan settled for silver (1:50.88). Lorana Hussein of the Philippines won the bronze.
- Ankesh has also won the gold in Men’s 800 meters at the Indian Grand Prix-1 and the Federation Cup. Somnath won the silver in Federation cup.
iv.India’s Dev Kumar Meena won the silver in men’s pole vault with 5.10m.
v.Nithya Ramraj won the silver in the women’s 100m hurdles while Velluva Koroth Vismaya won the bronze in the women’s 400m race.

International Sex Workers’ Day 2024 – June 2
International Sex Workers’ Day, also known as International Whores’ Day is annually observed across the globe on 2 June to recognise and honour sex workers globally and raise awareness about the issues sex workers face and about their exploited working conditions.
- Each year, International Sex Workers’ Day is commemorated by the Global Network of Sex Work Projects (NSWP), focusing on the theme, “Access to Justice.”
Background:
i.On 2 June 1975, approximately 100 sex workers occupied Saint-Nizier Church in Lyon, France, to protest against their criminalised and exploitative living conditions.
ii.Since 1975, the 2nd June of every year is commemorated as International Sex Workers’ Day in Europe and worldwide.

World Bicycle Day 2024 – June 3 The United Nations (UN) World Bicycle Day is annually observed across the globe on 3 June to raise awareness of the Bicycle, a clean and environmentally fit sustainable transport system that promotes economic growth and reduces inequalities.
- This Day promotes bicycles as an affordable, reliable, and sustainable means of transportation to combat climate change towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Background:
i.On 12 April 2018, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/72/272, proclaiming the 3 June as World Bicycle Day.
ii.The resolution was adopted by a consensus of 193 member states, sponsored by Turkmenistan and co-sponsored by some 56 countries.
iii.The first-ever UN-designated World Bicycle Day was observed on 3 June 2018.
