Union Minister Annapurna Devi Launches ‘She-Box Portal’ To Enhance Workplace Safety For Women
Union Minister Annapurna Devi, the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MoWCD) has launched the ‘SHe-Box portal’, a centralized platform for registering and monitoring complaints of sexual harassment of women at the workplace, during the launch event held in New Delhi, Delhi.
- Annapurna Devi also launched a new website of the MoWCD during the event.

About She-Box Portal:
i.The She-Box Portal acts as a centralised repository for information about Internal Committees (ICs) and Local Committees (LCs) formed across India, covering both the public and private sectors.
ii.The portal will allow women to file complaints, track their status, and ensure a time-bound processing of complaints by ICs.
iii.It also includes a designated Nodal Officer to enable real-time monitoring of complaints, resulting in a faster and assured redressal process.
iv.This initiative is a significant step toward providing a more effective and secure platform for addressing workplace sexual harassment complaints.
v.The SHe-Box portal launch aligns with India’s broader vision of ‘Viksit Bharat by 2047’, with a significant emphasis on women-led development.

RailTel Awarded ISO 14001:2015 Certification
New Delhi (Delhi) based RailTel Corporation of India Limited (RailTel), a Mini-Ratna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the Ministry of Railways (MoR) has been awarded the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001:2015 certification, a globally recognized standard for Environmental Management Systems (EMS).
i.This certification encompasses RailTel’s administration and management of a nationwide broadband telecom and multimedia network to support the growth of national telecom infrastructure, the internet, digital India, and Information Technology (IT) – enabled value-added services in all parts of India, including rural areas.
ii.RailTel has demonstrated its commitment to not only meeting regulatory requirements, but also emphasising environmental protection.
iii.The ISO 14001:2015 standard assists the organisation in achieving climate neutrality by reducing carbon footprints and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.

India hands over First Payment to Sri Lanka for Power Projects
On August 29, 2024, Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha handed over the first payment for hybrid power projects on three Sri Lankan islands(Delft, Nainativu and Analaitivu islands) to Dr Sulakshana Jayawardena, Secretary of the Minister of Power and Energy, Government of Sri Lanka and Ranjith Sepala, Chairman of Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA) at a ceremony held in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
- This latest development follows a series of diplomatic engagements by High Commissioner Jha across Sri Lanka.
- The project is being implemented under grant assistance of USD 11 million from the Government of India.
Background:
iThe Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the project was signed in 2022, replacing a Chinese venture after India’s objections.
ii.The contract for the project implementation was signed by SLSEA with U Solar Clean Energy Solutions Private Limited in March 2024.
iii.Initial work has started, with project completion expected by early March 2025 and handover by late April 2025.
Key Points:
i.The projects will install a hybrid renewable energy system in the Delft, Nainativu and Analaitivu islands. The islands are located near Tamil Nadu(TN).
ii.The projects aim to address the energy needs forthe three islands, which are not connected to the national grid.

GoI Appointed Satish Kumar Vaduguri as Interim Chairman of IOCL & Rajneesh Narang as Interim CMD of HPCL
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), Government of India (GoI) assigned Satish Kumar Vaduguri with the Additional Charge of Chairman of the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL). He will replace Shrikant Madhav Vaidya, the incumbent Chairman, who is set to retire on 31 August 2024.
- The MoPNG also appointed Rajneesh Narang with the Additional Charge of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL). He will replace the incumbent CMD Pushp Kumar Joshi, who is scheduled to retire on 31 August 2024.
- Both have been given the additional charge for 3 months with effect from 1 September 2024 or till the appointment of a regular incumbent to the post or until further orders, whichever is earliest.
Note: IOCL and HPCL are Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) under the MoPNG. HPCL is a subsidiary of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC).

Indian Navy Commissioned INS Arighaat, 2nd Arihant-Class Submarine, in Visakhapatnam
On 29th August 2024, Indian Naval Ship (INS) Arighaat, the 2nd Arihant-Class SSBN(Ship, Submersible, Ballistic, Nuclear), was commissioned into the Indian Navy at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh (AP) in the presence of Union Minister Rajnath Singh, Ministry of Defence (MoD).
- It is India’s 2nd indigenous nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, after INS Arihant which was commissioned into service in August 2016.
Note: Arihant is a Sanskrit word which means ‘Destroyer of the Enemy’.
Key People:
Admiral Dinesh Tripathi, Chief of Naval Staff(CNS), Vice-Admiral Suraj Berry, and officials from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) were present during the event.
Key Points:
i.INS Arighaat retains the same reactor and dimensions of INS Arihant such as: displacement of 6,000 tonnes and is powered by an 83 MegaWatt (MW) pressurized light-water reactor with enriched Uranium (U), but has several technological upgrades.
ii.INS Arighaat was constructed by using the advanced design and manufacturing technology, detailed Research & Development (R&D), utilization of special materials, complex engineering and highly skilled workmanship.
iii.The technological advancements undertaken indigenously in the development of this submarine make it more advanced than its predecessor, Arihant.
iv.INS Arighaat is expected to operate under the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), which is responsible for India’s nuclear arsenal.
Features:
i.It can attain speeds up to 24 knots (44 km/hr) when submerged and about 12-15 knots (22-28 km/rh) on surface level.
ii.It has 4 missile launch tubes. Each tube can carry up to three K-15 submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBM) with a range of 750 km, or one K-4 SLBM, that has a range of 3,500 km. Both are capable of carrying nuclear warheads

ISRO Successfully Demonstrates Satellite Technique to Study Ocean and Soil Parameters
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully demonstrated a technique to collect data on soil moisture, surface inundation, and ocean surface wind and wave measurements, by using satellite based sensor Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry(GNSS-R) that is 475 kilometer (km) above the earth.
- GNSS-R instrument is developed by the ISRO’s Space Application Centre (SAC) and it is India’s 1st space-borne precision receiver.
Key Points:
i.The raw data collected by the GNSS-R instrument is being processed at the ISRO’S National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) in Shadnagar, Hyderabad.
ii.The data is being processed by using algorithms and data processing software developed by Ahmedabad(Gujarat)-based (ISRO-SAC).

England’s Cricketer Dawid Malan Announced Retirement from International Cricket
English Cricketer Dawid Malan(37 years old), the former World No.1 Twenty20 International (T20I) batter, has announced his retirement from international cricket.
- He last played for England at the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 held in India.
i.He made his T20I debut in June 2017 at The Oval cricket ground, (also known as Kia Oval for sponsorship reasons) in London, the United Kingdom(UK).
ii.He has scored 1,892 runs in T20Is (62 matches), 1,450 in One Day Internationals (ODIs) (30 games) and 1,074 in Tests (22 matches). He is the second English batter after Jos Buttler, to have scored a century in all three formats in International Cricket.
iii.In 2020, he topped the ICC Men’s T20I Batting Rankings and He also became the fastest player to reach 1000 runs in the format, from just 24 innings.
- He also holds the distinction of achieving a peak rating of 915 in the ICC T20I Player Rankings for batting.
iv.He was a part of England’s winning squad in the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup held in Australia.

Air Chief Marshal Vivek Ram Chaudhari, Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) of the Indian Air Force (IAF), has launched the first comic book in the series “Heroes of the Indian Air Force.” The book published by the IAF aims to depict the heroic narratives of the IAF through comics.
i.The book was developed by the National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC), with Anubhav Khanduri as the General Manager.
ii.Rogue Communications Private Limited, an agency empanelled under the same name handled the storyline and creatives.
iii.The 32-page book narrates 2 stories, “Find Your Calling” about the life of Marshal of the Air Force Arjan Singh, Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) (1944), and “The Boyra Boys” which narrates the epic air battle during the 1971 Indo-Pak War.
iv.The book aims to educate and inspire young readers, fostering a sense of duty and aspiration to join the IAF.

International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances 2024 – August 30
The United Nations (UN)’s International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances is annually observed across the globe on 30 August to raise awareness about enforced or involuntary disappearances worldwide.
Background:
i.On 21st December 2010, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/65/209, proclaiming the 30th of August of every year as the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances.
- By the same resolution, the UNGA welcomed the adoption of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (ICPPED).
ii.The first-ever International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances was observed on 30 August 2011.

National Small Industry Day 2024 – August 30
National Small Industry Day is annually observed across India on 30 August to celebrate and recognise the contributions of Small Scale Industries (SSIs) to India’s economic growth and development.
- The Day also highlights various government programs and policies aimed at supporting and promoting small industries.
Background:
i.On 30 August 2000, the then Prime Minister (PM) Atal Bihari Vajpayee, introduced a new comprehensive policy package for the SSI sector at the first-ever National Conference on SSI organised by the Ministry of SSI and the Ministry of Agro and Rural Industries (ARI).
- Since then, the Government of India (GoI) has been celebrating 30 August as National Small Industry Day.
ii.NSID was first observed on August 30, 2001.
