150 Indian villages to convert into ‘Villages of Excellence’ with Technical help from IsraelIsrael to help India to convert 150 villages into Villages of Excellence

The Central Government will convert 150 villages around Centres of Excellence (CoEs) into ‘Villages of Excellence’ in 12 States with technical assistance from Israel government.

  • The information for the same was conveyed by Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare (MoAFW) during a meeting with new Israeli Ambassador to India Naor Gilon at Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi.

Key Points:
i.Out of 150 villages, 75  villages will be taken up in the first year to commemorate the 75th year of India’s independence.
ii.Notably, Israel government has already established 29 CoEs in 12 States, which are producing more than 25 million vegetable plants, over 3,87,000 quality fruit plants and can train more than 1.2 lakh farmers per year.
iii.India and Israel also completed its 30 years of diplomatic relation.

INPA signs MoU with IIFL Home Finance to Explore Recruitment of Indian Navy’s Veterans INPA signs MoU with IIFL Home Finance to explore recruitment

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been inked between the Indian Naval Placement Agency (INPA) and IIFL (formerly India Infoline Limited) Home Finance Limited (IIFL HFL) to look into the opportunities for the recruitment of naval veterans.

  • Through the MoU, the INPA will identify ex-servicemen/dependents candidates for relevant roles in IIFL HFL.

Signatories:
Vice Admiral Suraj Berry, Controller of Personnel Services, Indian Navy (IN); and Monu Ratra, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), IIFL HFL.
Key Points:
i.The ex-servicemen will be upskilled as per the norms and standards of the corporate sector through in-house assimilation and training programs.
ii.IIFL HFL aims to offer these individuals opportunities as per their qualifications, experience, and attributes acquired during their service period.

  • On the other hand, INPA aims to enhance second career opportunities for retired Indian Navy personnel in the private sector.

2nd ADGMIN Meeting Approved India-ASEAN Digital Work Plan 2022
2nd ASEAN Digital Ministers (ADGMIN) meeting

On 28 January 2022, the 2nd ASEAN Digital Ministers (ADGMIN) meeting took place via video conferencing. The meeting was co-chaired by Devusinh Chauhan, Indian Minister of State for Communications and H.E. Admiral Tin Aung San, Ministry of Transport and Communications, Myanmar.

  • The India-ASEAN Digital work plan 2022 was approved by the Ministers during the meeting.
  • The ADGMIN is an annual meeting of Telecom Ministers of 10 ASEAN and dialogue partner countries.

Countries included- 10 ASEAN Countries and dialogue partner countries – Australia, Canada, China, EU, India, Japan, Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Russia, UK and US. 
Highlights of the meeting:
i.The ASEAN Digital Work Plan 2022  includes a system for combating the use of stolen and counterfeit mobile handsets, WiFi Access network interface for nationwide public internet, capacity building and related developments.
ii.The nations discussed the plan and strategy  to strengthen regional digital cooperation in the field of digital inclusion and integration.
iii.The ongoing and proposed projects in  Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), will strengthen collaboration between India and ASEAN ties.

  • They will work in leveraging technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT), 5G, Advanced Satellite Communication, Cyber Forensics, etc.

  • The ASEAN stands for Association of South-East Asian Nations.
  • The ASEAN Summit is the highest policy-making body in ASEAN comprising the Head of States or Government of ASEAN Member States. The First ASEAN Summit was held in Bali, Indonesia in 1976.

On 28th January 2022, the birth anniversary of legendary classical vocalist late Pandit Jasraj, Prime Minister(PM) Narendra Modi virtually launched the Pandit Jasraj Cultural Foundation. 

  • The foundation aims to preserve India’s rich heritage of arts and culture. 
  • PM Modi highlighted that similar to yoga, Indian music has the capacity to stir the depth of the human mind.

Padma Awardee Pandit Jasraj was a legendary classical vocalist, who belonged to the Mewati Gharana (musical apprenticeship lineage).

SBI lists $300 million via Taiwan’s Formosa Bonds on India INXSBI lists $300-m Formosa bonds on India INX

On January 28, 2022, the State Bank of India (SBI) listed its 1st USD 300 million Formosa bonds on India International Exchange IFSC (India INX). SBI became the first Indian entity to raise money through Formosa Bond.

  • Through the issuance, India INX became the first Exchange in IFSC (International Financial Services Centre) to list Formosa Bonds issued by SBI.
  • SBI, acting through its London branch, raised USD 300 million of ‘Regulation S’ Formosa bonds at a coupon rate of 2.49 percent.
  • The bond is benchmarked against the 5 years U.S. Treasury and priced at a spread of 100bps (basis Points) over the benchmark.

What is Formosa bond?
i.It is a bond issued in Taiwan and listed on the Taipei Exchange. The bond is dominated by currencies other than the New Taiwan dollar.
ii.In order to qualify as Formosa bond issuers, borrowers need to have an investment grade or credit ratings of BBB or higher.

RBI Imposes Restrictions on Indian Mercantile Cooperative BankRBI imposes restrictions on Indian Mercantile Cooperative Bank

On 28th January 2022 The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed several restrictions on Indian Mercantile Cooperative Bank Limited, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh including a cap of Rs 1 lakh on withdrawals.

  • RBI issued the directions in the exercise of powers vested in it under sub section (1) of Section 35 A read with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act (As Applicable to Cooperative Societies), 1949. 

About the restriction:
i.The restriction also includes withdrawal restriction of Rs 1 Lakh across all savings or current accounts or any other account of a depositor in the bank.
ii.The directions under the Banking Regulation Act, 1949  would remain in force for a period of 6 months from the close of business on 28th January 2022 and are subject to review.
iii.The bank was not allowed to write, grant or renew any loans and advances, make any investment, incur any liability including borrowal of funds and acceptance of fresh deposits without prior approval of RBI.

There are three types of co-operative banks organised at three levels, village or town level, district level and state level. They are primary credit societies, central cooperative banks and state co-operative banks.

The Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India Limited (SPMCIL) has set up new Bank Note Printing Lines at Currency Note Press (CNP), Nashik in Maharashtra; and Bank Note Press (BNP), Dewas in Madhya Pradesh as a part of its modernization initiatives.
Inauguration:
i.The bank note printing line at CNP Nashik was virtually inaugurated by Meera Swarup, Special Secretary & Financial Adviser, Ministry of Finance.
ii.The inauguration of the bank note printing line at BNP, Dewas was virtually done by Shashank Saksena, Senior Economic Adviser, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance.

Meta (formerly Facebook) has joined hands with Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) to support five lakh women-led small businesses across India under its #SheMeansBusiness programme.

  • This announcement was made during the Meta’s 1st National Women Entrepreneurship Summit 2022 which was held in virtual mode to encourage and support the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across sectors.
  • This partnership will provide capital access, relevant digital tools, programs and resources which currently are the key issues faced by women-led businesses

Key Points:
i.Under this partnership, Meta will support via three initiatives viz. Facebook Business Coach, Grow your Business Hub, and Meta’s Commerce Partners Program
ii.This partnership is also a part of the Meta’s commitment to enabling one crore small businesses over the next three years via Meta’s Centre for Fuelling India’s New Economy (C-FINE) in Gurugram, Haryana.
iii.Out of over 63 million small businesses in India, about 20% are owned by women.
iv.Meta’s #SheMeansBusiness programme, initiated in 2016, is a platform for entrepreneurial women to make connections.

i.Cadets of 17 NCC directorates from various states participated in the month-long 2022 Republic Day camp.
ii.The Maharashtra Directorate fielded a contingent of 57 cadets (boys and girls) from various districts of Maharashtra. 
iii.Various competitions like, drill, marching on Rajpath, guard of honour to PM, PM’s rally line layout, flag area briefing and cultural events were conducted during the RDC. 

Pakistan’s Shaheen Shah Afridi wins Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year 2021Shaheen Afridi wins Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Player of 2021The International Cricket Council(ICC) announced the winners of the 2021 ICC Awards, which recognise and celebrate the achievement of players and teams over the year 2021. 
Pakistan’s Shaheen Shah Afridi has been awarded the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year 2021. 

  • Mohammad Babar Azam, captain of Pakistan’s cricket team has been honoured with the ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year 2021 and Joe Root, Test Captain of England has won the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year 2021. 

Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy:
The Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy is named after Sir Garfield Sobers, former captain of West Indies. 
The inaugural Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy was awarded to India’s Rahul Dravid in 2004. 
Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy 2021:
Smriti Mandhana of India won the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy for ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year 2021. 

  • She has become the 2nd woman cricketer to win the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy more than once after Australian all-rounder Ellyse Perry.
  • Previously she has won the trophy in 2018. 

About Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy:
The ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year award instituted in 2006 has been named after Rachael Heyhoe-Flint, the erstwhile English Women’s cricketer and administrator.

India’s Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve won TX2 Award 2022 for Doubling Tiger Population Since 2010Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve bags TX2 award

India’s Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR) in Erode, Tamil Nadu, and Nepal’s Bardiya National Park has jointly won the TX2 award 2022 for doubling their tiger populations since 2010.  

  • The awards are presented by the Conservation Assured |Tiger Standards (CA|TS), Fauna and Flora International (FFI), Global Tiger Forum (GTF), IUCN’s Integrated Tiger Habitat Conservation Programme (ITHCP), Panthera, UNDP (United Nations Development Programme), The Lion’s Share, Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) Tigers Alive Initiative. 

Key Points about TX2 Awards:
a.TX2 Award 2022:
i.STR: The award was given for STR after its tiger numbers doubled to 80 since 2010. 

  • Sathyamangalam wildlife sanctuary was declared a tiger reserve in 2013 and the reserve that spread across 1,411.60 sq km is an important link between the Nilgiris and the Eastern Ghats landscape. 
  • The Nilgiri biosphere landscape is currently the home to the largest tiger population in the world. 

b.Tiger Conservation Excellence Award 2022:
The award for Tiger Conservation Excellence was presented to Khata Forest Conservation Area  in Nepal a network of 74 community forests covering 202 sq km,  which secures transboundary connectivity for tigers between Nepal and India.

Govt appoints Anantha Nageswaran as Chief Economic Advisor of IndiaGovt appoints Anantha Nageswaran as Chief Economic Advisor

The Union government  appointed Dr V Anantha Nageswaran as the Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) for the Ministry of Finance. He will succeed  K V Subramanian, who left the office of CEA vacant in December 2021 after completing his 3 year term.

  • His appointment as CEA comes days ahead of the release of the 2022 Economic Survey on 31st January. 
  • This year the economic survey will be presented as a Single part, instead of the normal 2 part report. 

Note – Economic Survey is an annual document that details sector wise economic development in India in the previous budget year. CEA is the principal author of the Economic Survey.
Work & function of Chief Economic Advisor (CEA):
i.The CEA examines national and international economic trends and also undertakes research studies focusing on economic policies and management of the economy.
ii.Based on the research, the CEA provides advice to the Government of India regarding economic policy and reforms.
iii.The CEA helps in  preparing the government’s annual Economic Survey preceding the Union Budget.
About V Anantha Nageswaran:
i.He is a  Postgraduate in Management from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) and holds a  doctoral degree from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst (United States).

  • He has also been a part-time member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (PM) of India from 2019 to 2021. 

ii.Prior to this appointment, he has worked as a writer, author, teacher and consultant and also served as the Dean of the IFMR Graduate School of Business and a distinguished Visiting Professor of Economics at Krea University in Andhra Pradesh.

  • Participants – Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilisers Bhagwanth Khuba and Niti Aayog member, Health, Dr V. K Paul were present on the occasion.
  • Aim – To spread information about all the NIPERs research activities, patents filed and Publication information at one place

About NIPER Research Portal:
i.The Department of Pharmaceuticals has created this Research Portal to capture the research activities of all seven NIPERs and to enhance industry–Academia collaboration

  • The 6 new NIPER has been established under the aegis of the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers in 2007.

ii.The portal will help the Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector by connecting with industries to develop a model to fulfil their requirements.
Note – India is the 3rd largest pharmaceutical manufacturing country.

Parliament Launches Digital Sansad App to make Live Proceedings of Parliament Parliament launches Digital Sansad App
The Lok Sabha secretariat has launched a new app, ‘Digital Sansad’, an initiative of Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla, to make the Parliament proceedings accessible to the public at large.
The ‘Digital Sansad App’:
i.The app helps in accessing services such as checking personal updates like status of their notices, House bulletins, and so on.

  • It also includes services like enabling the Member of Parliament (MPs) to log in for attendance, give questions for the Question Hour or submit notices for debates or adjournment motions, in future.

ii.The app is available in both android and IOS platform which has already seen more than 8000 users from India and other countries including the US and Saudi Arabia.
iii.The citizens can now easily access general information on MPs, on budget speeches since 1947, House discussions from 12th Lok Sabha to 17th Lok Sabha.
iv.The App will also contain the live telecast of Sansad proceedings, the major news of the day, virtual tour of the Parliament and live 2022 Budget session.

Two new Species of Fungi – Ganoderma keralense & G. pseudoapplanatum associated with Basal Stem Rot found in KeralaTwo species of fungi associated with basal stem rot found

Researchers from Kerala have identified two new species of fungi from the genus Ganoderma that are associated with coconut stem rot disease, an irrecoverable disease for plants.

  • The scientists have genotyped two two fungi species, named Ganoderma keralense and G. pseudoapplanatum and identified genetic biomarkers. 
  • The research was also published in the Journal Mycologia. 

Note- The study of fungi is known as Mycology and the study of algae is known as Phycology.
About Basal Stem Rot:
The butt rot or basal stem rot of coconut is known by several names in different parts of India: Ganoderma wilt (Andhra Pradesh), Anaberoga (Karnataka) and Thanjavur wilt (Tamil Nadu) etc. 
Early and later phase of symptoms:
i.Initially it infected the roots and the  symptoms can be seen as discoloration and rotting of stem and leaves. In the later stages, flowering and nut set decreases and finally the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) dies.
ii.A reddish brown oozing can be noticed. This oozing has been reported only in India.
iii.Another sign of infection is presence of shelf-like “basidiomata,” which are the fruiting or reproductive structures of the fungus, on the tree trunks.
What is Fungus?
i.Fungi can be single celled or very complex multicellular organisms (Eukaryotic).
ii.They are found in just about any habitat but most live on the land, mainly in soil or on plant material rather than in sea or freshwater.
iii.A group called the decomposers grow in the soil or on dead plant matter where they play an important role in the cycling of carbon.

  • Fungal diseases in plants- Anthracnose, Botrytis rots, Downy mildews, Fusarium rots, Powdery mildews etc.
  • Fungal disease in humans-Athletes’ foot, ringworm and thrush.

Hockey: Women’s Asia Cup Muscat 2022: India won Bronze; Japan won GoldWomen’s Asia Cup Hockey India beat China 2-0 to win Bronze medal

Indian National Women’s Hockey Team captained by Savita Punia has won the bronze medal in the Women’s Asia Cup Muscat 2022 defeating China in the bronze match held on 28th January 2022.
India lost to South Korea in the semi-final.

  • Women’s Asia Cup Muscat 2022 hosted by Oman was held at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex, Muscat, Oman from 21st to 28th January 2022. 

2022 Winner:
i.Japan won the Women’s Hockey Asia Cup 2022 defeating three-time champions South Korea. 
ii.This marks the 3rd title of Japan which has previously won the title in 2007 and 2013. 
Note: Previously India won the championship in 2004 and 2017
Women’s Asia Cup Muscat 2022:
i.Women’s Asia Cup Muscat 2022 is the 10th edition of the Women’s Hockey Asia Cup. 
ii.It is the quadrennial international women’s field hockey championship of Asia organized by the Asian Hockey Federation.

A new book titled “The $10 Trillion Dream” authored by former finance secretary Subhash Chandra Garg is set to be launched in February 2022. This is his debut book, which will be published by Penguin Random House India (PRHI).
i.The book explores the economic policy issues of India and suggests reformative ideas to make India a USD 10 trillion economy by the mid-2030s.

  • It elaborates the performance of the economy on macro parameters of growth such as  inflation, monetary management, credit management, foreign capital inflows, fiscal management and others

ii.It also suggests that India needs to adopt a bold and robust economic policy agenda to achieve a  USD 5 trillion economy by 2026-27 and a USD 10 trillion economy by 2035.
iii.Subhash Chandra Garg, previously served as Economic Affairs Secretary and Finance Secretary of India in 2019 also served as an executive director in the World Bank.

Reliance Jio & BP Opens EV Charging Hubs at Delhi; Delhi Govt Launches One-Stop e-vehicle website

Jio-BP, a joint venture of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and energy supermajor BP, named Reliance BP Mobility Limited (RBML) has opened one of India’s largest Electronic Vehicle (EV) charging hubs in Dwarka, Delhi with BluSmart as its primary customer.

  • The RBML aims to become a leading EV charging infrastructure player in India

Jio-bp will set up a network of EV charging stations and battery swap stations at its petrol pumps named ‘Mobility Stations’, and at other standalone locations named ‘Mobility Points’.

i.In 2019, BP had bought a 49 percent stake in over 1,400 petrol pumps and 31 aviation turbine fuel (ATF) stations owned by Reliance for USD 1 billion and shall scale up to 5,500 by 2025.
ii.Reliance holds the remaining 51 percent stake in RBML which has already received the marketing authorisation for transportation fuels.
Note – RBML had launched its first Jio-bp branded Mobility Station at Navade, Navi Mumbai in October 2021. 
Other fuel retailers:
State-owned Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) is the largest fuel retailer with 33,546 petrol pumps. Privatisation-bound Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) has 19,668 outlets and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) has 19,602 petrol pumps.
Delhi Govt launches one-stop e-vehicle website:

The Delhi government launched a dedicated one-stop website, “ev.delhi.gov.in” for the promotion and adoption of electric vehicles (EVs).

i.The main features of website – ev.delhi.gov.in – designed keeping in mind both buyers and manufacturers, include a ‘charging stations explorer’, ‘EV calculator’, ‘EV search’ and ‘EV dashboard.
ii. As part of the first feature, the website provides consumers with details of public charging stations currently active in the city. 
iii. EV calculator provides the visitor an estimate of fuel savings on his choice of electric vehicle in comparison to an equivalent conventional vehicle.EV search option will enable visitors “to explore various EV model variants available to them, which can be filtered according to their price, brand and range in a single charge.EV dashboard updates the information on the total sales of EVs in Delhi.
