PM Narendra Modi Participates in Grand Finale of ‘Ujjwal Bharat Ujjwal Bhavishya – Power @2047’ Programi.On July 30, 2022, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the Grand Finale of ‘Ujjwal Bharat Ujjwal Bhavishya- Power @2047’ via video conferencing.
ii.As a part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, it was organized from July 25-31, 2022 in all districts of India by the Electricity Department. It was initiated by the Ministry of Power, and Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), to showcase the transformation, and achievements in the power sector in the last 8 years.
iii.The PM also launched the National Portal for Rooftop solar (https://solarrooftop.gov.in/) at Kandukur village which will enable online tracking of the process of installation of rooftop solar plants, registering the applications, release of subsidy in residential consumers’ bank account, among others.
iv.The PM also dedicated and laid the foundation stone of the various green energy projects of NTPC (formerly National thermal power corporation) worth over Rs 5200 crore.
v.The first-ever national-level meeting of All India District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs) was organised from July 30-31 at Vigyan Bhawan by National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).

GoI forms Task Force to Monitor Monkeypox Virus Cases in IndiaThe Government of India(GoI) constituted a Task Force to control the Monkeypox cases in India. The Task Force will monitor and provide guidance on the expansion of diagnostic facilities and to explore vaccination for the infection to the people of India.
- The Task Force will be headed by Dr. Vinod K. Paul, member (Health), NITI (National Institution for Transforming India) Aayog and members including Secretary, Union Health Ministry, Pharma and Biotech.
Highlights:
i.The decision was taken during a meeting which was attended by Cabinet secretary, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan, Additional Secretary, Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and other senior officials.
ii.According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 18,000 cases are reported from 78 countries. India confirmed some monkeypox cases in Kerala and Delhi.
About Monkeypox:
- It is a zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus(a member of the Orthopoxvirus genus in the family Poxviridae), which belongs to the same family of viruses that causes smallpox.
- The disease is endemic in regions like West and Central Africa.
- Kerala has reported the first death of a monkeypox case in India.
3 days visit of Mozambique Parliamentary Delegation to India; Calls on President Droupadi Murmu
A Parliamentary delegation from Mozambique led by Speaker of Assembly of the Republic of Mozambique, Esperanca Laurinda Francisco Nhiuane Bias is on a three-day visit to India from 27 July to 29 July 2022.
- The Parliamentary delegations from Mozambique called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi, Delhi, on 29th July 2022.
- President of India, Droupadi Murmu received the delegation at Rashtrapati Bhavan as the first international delegation after her assumption of office on 25th July 2022.

On this occasion, They signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) to boost Cooperation between the Parliaments of India and Mozambique.

India’s Largest Online Herbarium Database, ‘Indian Virtual Herbarium’ Launched
During the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 91st edition of monthly radio broadcast programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’, he had shared the India’s effort in the field of varied medicinal plants and herbs.He highlighted the India’s largest online herbarium database, the “Indian Virtual Herbarium” web portal, was launched on July 1, 2022 by Union Minister Bhupender Yadav of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC).
- The Botanical Survey of India (BSI) developed the Indian Virtual Herbarium portal (https://ivh.bsi.gov.in) as part of the “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” and “Digital India” initiatives.
Aim: To provide comprehensive data on herbarium specimens regarding the floral diversity of India and other countries that are preserved in the cabinet of the herbarium building through online access.
- It will also help research studies and provide valuable information for global plant research.
Indian Virtual Herbarium: A Digital Platform to Connect with Our Roots
i. The BSI’s digital herbarium currently comprises 4 categories: Cryptogam type specimens, Cryptogams general specimens, Phanerogam type specimens, and Phanerogams general specimens.
ii.About 1 lakh herbarium specimen images with metadata, including all digitized images of type specimens, Wallich specimens, orchid specimens, and other specimens, are available on the portal.
iii. This database is India’s greatest repository of plant diversity information, and it can benefit taxonomists, naturalists, ecologists, molecular biologists, amateur botanists, and others.
iv.The MoEFCC will eventually incorporate specimens from university herbaria and other institutions’ herbariums in order to consolidate all of India’s herbarium data onto a single platform.
Note: Herbaria are usually affiliated with universities, museums, or botanical gardens.
What Are Herbarium Specimens?
An herbarium (Latin: hortus siccus) is a collection of plant samples and data that have been preserved for long-term study.
- These materials, which are collectively referred to as “herbarium specimens,” may comprise pressed and mounted plants, seeds, dry fruits, wood sections, pollen, microscope slides, silica-stored materials, frozen DNA extractions, and fluid-preserved flowers or fruits.
The herbarium is essential for plant identification, systematics studies, and ecological studies.
Major Herbaria in India
More than 30,000 herbarium specimens from various herbaria across India are preserved by the BSI.
i. The Central National Herbarium (CAL), in Howrah (West Bengal), founded in 1795. It houses around 2,000,000 (2 million) specimens.
- It is India’s first herbarium and one of the most prominent Asian herbaria.
India, Vietnam commences 3rd edition of Bilateral Army Exercise ‘VINBAX 2022‘
The 3rd edition of Vietnam-India bilateral army exercise ‘Ex VINBAX 2022‘ is scheduled to be conducted at Chandimandir in Haryana from August 1-20, 2022 which will see the participation of Indian Army (IA) and Vietnam People’s Army.
- The theme of Ex VINBAX – 2022 is employment and deployment of an Engineer Company and a Medical Team as part of United Nations Contingent for Peace Keeping Operations.
- IA is represented by troops from the 105 Engineer Regiment.
- The 1st edition of the India and Vietnam military exercise was held at Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh in 2018.
Focus of Exercise:
To strengthen the bilateral relations between India and Vietnam
What is in the exercise?
i.There will be field training exercise which will enhance mutual confidence, inter-operability and enable sharing of best practices between both the armies.
ii.The troops of both the Contingents will learn about the social and cultural heritage of each other.
iii.There will also be a 48 hours Validation Exercise which will assess the standards achieved by both contingents while executing technical military operations under similar scenarios in UN (United Nations) missions.
iv.A Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief demonstration and equipment display will also be there.
India and Vietnam Relations:
i.Both nations share a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and defence cooperation is a key pillar of this partnership.
ii.Vietnam is an important partner in India’s Act East policy and the Indo-Pacific vision.
iii.India and Vietnam signed a “Joint Vision” document to significantly enhance the scope and scale of bilateral ties by 2030 during the Vietnam visit of Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in June 2022.
iv.The two countries signed a pact on mutual logistics support, the first of its kind that Vietnam has signed with any country.
v.Vietnam is the 15th largest trade partner of India and India is its 10th largest partner with bilateral trade standing at USD 11.12 billion in 2020-21.

BEL Signs Rs. 250 Crore Deal with MoD Anti-Submarine Warfare Systems
Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL),a Navratna Defence Public Sector Unit(PSU) signed a contract worth Rs. 250 crore with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) for the supply of 9 integrated Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) complex (IAC) MOD ‘C’ Systems.
- IAC MOD C has been indigenously developed by BEL in association with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
About IAC MOD ‘C’ System:
i.The IAC MOD ‘C’ System is an integrated anti-submarine warfare (ASW) system for all surface ships of the Indian Navy.
ii.It consists of fire control solutions that can be customised to meet the requirements of small and large ships configuration and also facilitates the firing of ASW weapons such as torpedoes and rockets.
- The system also facilitates counter-measure capability for incoming torpedoes through the decoy launching system.

Tata Steel to roll out ‘First in India’ seating system for Vande Bharat Express trains
Tata Steel is set to manufacture ‘First-in-India’ 180-degree rotating seats for the Vande Bharat express trains. The Tata Group, India’s largest steel maker, is planning to spend Rs 3,000 crore on Research and Development (R&D) by FY2026 and will begin rolling out seating systems for Vande Bharat Express trains in September 2022.
i.Tata Steel’s Composites division has received a Rs 145 crore contract for Vande Bharat express seating systems, which involves the supply of entire seating systems for 22 train sets, each with 16 coaches. This would be the first time that seats built in India will be fitted on semi-high speed trains.
ii.The Tata Group is also targeting to be among the top 5 technology firms in the global steel industry by 2030.
Note- Vande Bharat Express, also known as Train 18, is the second fastest train in India which is operated by the Indian Railways only on two prominent routes as of March 2022, one from New Delhi to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and the other from New Delhi to Varanasi, operates at a speed of 130 km/hr.

Indian & French Navies Conduct MPX in the North Atlantic Ocean
The Indian and French Navies conducted a Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX) on 29th and 30th July 2022 in the North Atlantic Ocean. The replenishment at sea was exercised between the Indian Navy Ship (INS) Tarkash and the French Fleet Tanker French Navy Ship (FNS) Somme.
i.INS Tarkash(F50) carried out various drills with the French fleet tanker FS Somme, which was followed by joint air operations with maritime surveillance aircraft Falcon 50 participating in multiple simulated missile engagements and air defence drills.INS Tarkash is on a long-range overseas deployment.
About INS Tarkash:
i.It is the second Talwar-class frigate constructed for the Indian Navy.
ii.It is a part of the second batch of Talwar-class frigates, built at the Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad, Russia.

Three biennial training exercises conducted between India & France-
- Exercise Garuda with the Indian Air Force,
- Exercise Varuna with the Indian Navy

Only 52% Children Living with HIV Are On Life-Saving Treatment: UNAIDS Global AIDS Update 2022
According to the ‘UNAIDS Global AIDS Update 2022: In Danger’, only half (52%) of children living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) are on life-saving therapy globally, considerably behind adults, who receive three quarters (76%) of antiretrovirals.
- In line with this, a new ‘Global Alliance for Ending AIDS in Children by 2030’ was announced at the 24th International AIDS Conference 2022 taking place in Montreal, Canada.
- AIDS stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome.
- According to the UNICEF, about 2.8 million children and adolescents are currently living with HIV, nearly 88 per cent of them in sub-Saharan Africa.
The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), World Health Organization (WHO), and partners have joined forces to form the global alliance in order to guarantee that no child living with HIV is denied treatment by the end of the decade (2030) and to prevent new infant HIV infections.
- The alliance will function for the next eight years, until 2030, with the goal of addressing one of the most glaring disparities in AIDS response.
Composition of the Alliance
i. Apart from United Nations (UN)agencies, the alliance also comprises National Governments in the most affected countries, civil society movements like the Global Network of People Living with HIV, and international partners like the United States (US) President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the Global Fund.
ii.12 countries that have joined the alliance in the first phase: Angola, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
Four Pillars for Collective Action Identified by The Alliance
i. Closing the treatment gap for pregnant and breastfeeding adolescent girls and women living with HIV and optimizing continuity of treatment
ii.Preventing and detecting new HIV infections among pregnant and breastfeeding adolescent girls and women
iii. Accessible testing, optimized treatment, and comprehensive care for infants, children, and adolescents exposed to and living with HIV
iv.Addressing rights, gender equality, and the social and structural barriers that hinder access to services
BANKING & FINANCE
SIDBI Partners with SVC Bank for Empowering MSMEs
On 1st August 2022 Small Industries Development Bank in India (SIDBI), India’s apex financial institution for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) partnered with SVC Co-operative Bank Limited (SVC Bank), one of India’s leading co-operative banks to extend refinance facility to facilitate an improved flow of credit to MSMEs.
- On 28th July 2022, the agreement was signed by Ashish Singhal, Managing Director (MD), SVC Bank and Sanjeev Gupta, General Manager (GM), SIDBI in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
- This is the first such agreement signed by SIDBI with Urban Cooperative Banks (USBs).
Highlights:
i.SIDBI provides refinance to primary lending institutions such as banks including small finance banks, non-banking finance companies, and microfinance institutions which in turn provide credit to MSMEs.
- It is also engaged in direct financing of small businesses through long-term loans including working-capital facilities.
ii.In January 2022, SIDBI had sanctioned a financial assistance of Rs 650 crore to two small finance banks including AU Small Finance Bank and Jana Small Finance Bank from the Special Liquidity Facility of Rs 16,000 crore sanctioned to SIDBI by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
KeyNote:
SIDBI has recently decided to extend refinance assistance to eligible scheduled Urban Co-operative Banks (UCBs) and Regional Rural Banks (RRBs).
- SIDBI is set to sign more such Agreements with other UCBs and RRBs across various States.

PNB Gets RBI Approval to Invest Rs 500 crore in PNB Housing Finance Rights Issue
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the Punjab National Bank (PNB) to infuse investment of Rs 500 crore in the proposed Rs.2,500 crore rights issue of PNB Housing Finance Limited (PNBHFL).The rights issue process is expected to conclude by December 2022 or latest in the March quarter.
- PNB, the second largest public sector bank, has a 32.57 percent stake in PNBHFL.
Highlights:
i.After the investment of Rs. 500 crore, PNB’s shareholding in PNBHFL will fall below 30 per cent but would be higher than 26% so that the PNB retains its promoter status.
- The detailed terms of the rights issue, including the issue price, rights entitlement ratio, record date and timing will be finalised.
ii.PNBHFL will raise Rs 2,000 crore by issuing non-convertible debentures (NCD) on a private placement basis which the board of PNB will consider and approve the proposal of issuance of NCDs on 14th June 2022.
iii.The PNB board has already approved capital raising of Rs. 12,000 crore. Out of which, Rs, 5,500 crore is for AT1 and remaining Rs. 6,500 crore for Tier-2 capital.

GOI Announces Sale of Four Dated Securities for a Notified Amount of Rs 33,000 croreThe Government of India (GoI) has announced the sale (re-issue) of four dated securities for a notified amount of Rs. 33,000 crore which will be conducted by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), on 5th August 2022.
The four securities:
i.6.69% Government Security 2024 for a notified amount of Rs 4,000 Crore (nominal) through price based auction using uniform price method.
ii.7.10% Government Security 2029 for a notified amount of Rs 7,000 Crore (nominal) through price based auction using uniform price method.
iii.6.54% Government Security 2032 for a notified amount of Rs 13,000 Crore (nominal) through price based auction using uniform price method.
iv.6.95% Government Security 2061 for a notified amount of Rs 9,000 Crore (nominal) through price based auction using multiple price method.
Highlights:
i.As per the Scheme for Non-Competitive Bidding Facility in the Auction of Government Securities, up to 5% of the notified amount of the sale of the securities will be allotted to eligible individuals and institutions.
ii.GoI will have the option to retain additional subscription up to Rs 2,000 Crore against each of the four securities.
Infosys Finacle Gets Inducted into IFSCA’s Regulatory Sandbox Framework
Infosys Finacle, part of EdgeVerve Systems, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Infosys, has been inducted into the International Financial Services Centres Authority’s (IFSCA) Regulatory Sandbox framework to pilot its blockchain-based trade finance solution.
- The authorization was granted to Sajit Vijayakumar, Chief Operating Officer (COO), Infosys Finacle, in the presence of Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, during a ceremony hosted by the IFSCA at the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
Background
- As part of InFinity Forum 2021, IFSCA launched I-Sprint ’21, a global FinTech (Financial Technology) hackathon, as part of its effort to support a world-class fintech hub at GIFT City.
- The blockchain-based Finacle Trade Connect was chosen for the “Buyers’ credit optimization” category and was granted direct entry into the IFSCA’s Regulatory Sandbox.
Key Points
i. In the initial stage, six eminent banks—Federal Bank, HDFC Bank, HSBC, ICICI Bank, RBL Bank, and State Bank of India—will collaborate with Infosys Finacle in the regulatory sandbox.
ii.This partnership will enable comprehensive testing of the blockchain-based Buyers Credit solution, which provides short-term foreign currency credit for import payments and trade finance transactions.
- This will be a step toward the solution becoming a Software as a service (or SaaS) -based offering for all banks that serve customers from GIFT City.
Significance of Finacle Trade Connect
i. Finacle Trade Connect links banks, corporates, and trade partners, such as shipping firms, insurers, and customs agencies, to a unified distributed network, enabling inter-organizational automation of trade finance processes.
ii.In addition to Buyer’s Credit, the system also includes features for Letter of Credit, Open Account for Trade, Bill Collection, Bill Exchange, C2C Transactions for Trade, B2C Transactions for Trade, PO Financing, Invoice Financing, Bank Guarantee, and Factoring.
iii. It will connect several commercial banks, their international banking units at GIFT City, and their business clients on a unified, distributed platform to reduce friction in the trade finance value chain.
- The new platform will result in considerable cost savings and a reduction in transaction times from weeks to hours. It will also facilitate trade expansion to drive economic growth.

On 31st July 2022, England won the 2022 Union of European Football Associations (UEFA)’s European Women’s Football Championship for the first time after extra-time in the 2-1 Euro 2022 Final by defeating Germany.
- The tournament was held at Wembley Stadium in London, United Kingdom. This is the 13th edition of the UEFA Women’s Championship.
- England coach Sarina Wiegman became the first manager to win the Euros with two different nations, having led her native Netherlands to the title in 2017.

A book titled “The Dolphin and the Shark: Stories on Entrepreneurship” by Namita Thapar
A new book titled ”The Dolphin and the Shark: Stories on Entrepreneurship” was authored by Namita Thapar, Leading businesswoman and ‘Shark Tank India’ judge. The book was released by Penguin Random House India (PRHI)’s business imprint ‘Penguin Portfolio”.
i.The Dolphin and the Shark is Namita Thapar’s debut book and the book is born out of her experiences of being a judge on Shark Tank India and running the India business of the pharma company Emcure as well as her own entrepreneurship academy.
ii.The book emphasizes how leaders of today need to strike a balance between being a shark (aggressive leader) and a dolphin (empathetic leader).

West Bengal to Get Seven New Districts, Total Number of Districts Rises to 30
On 1st August 2022, West Bengal (WB) government under Chief Minister(CM) Mamata Banerjee decided to carve out seven new districts from the existing 23 districts by redrawing their boundaries for better administration and development.
The seven new districts include – Sunderban, Ichhemati, Ranaghat, Bishnupur, Jangipur, Behrampur and one more district will be named from Basirhat region.
- Ranaghat is separated from Nadia, Jangipur & Behrampur are separated from Murshidabad district and Bishnupuris divided from Bankura.
- Sundarban comes under South 24 Parganas, Icchemati and Basirhat comes under North 24 Parganas.

Assam CM launches ‘Mission Bhumiputra’ for digital issuance of caste certificates for students
On 1st August 2022, Assam Chief Minister (CM) Himanta Biswa Sarma launched ‘Mission Bhumiputra’ a digital way to issue digitized caste certificates to students.
- The CM inaugurated a Bhumiputra Portal at a programme held at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra Guwahati, Assam.
- The mission is implemented by the Departments of Tribal Affairs (Plain) and Department of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of Assam.
Highlights:
i.The mission will help in delivering easy public service to the general public of Assam. The manual system of issuing caste certificates will be ceased.
ii.The certificates will be available in the digi locker under the IT Act digitally signed by the respective Deputy Commissioners (DC).
iii.Eligible Class IX-XII students will now be able to download Scheduled Castes (SC)/Scheduled Tribes (ST)/Other Backward Classes (OBC) certificates from http://bhumiputra.assam.gov.in
vi.From the year 2023, students from Class VIII can apply for caste certificates through this portal.
- It will also be lined with the CM’s dashboard to enable the Chief Minister’s Office to monitor the entire process.
Certification Process:
i.The DC will provide the format of applications for the caste certificates to the Headmasters of educational institutions from August 8, 2022.
ii.The Headmasters will fill up the application formats for their onward submission to the DCs who then forward the applications to the Boards of respective caste or tribe.
iii.The DC then will convene a meeting with the Boards to decide on the protocol for issuing caste certificates to the students. If any doubt in the process crops up, the application may be sent for further verification.
