India Signed LoI with WFP to Combat Global HungerIn August 2025, the Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD), under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (MoCAF&PD), signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with the United Nations (UN’s) World Food Programme (WFP) in New Delhi, Delhi to strengthen cooperation in addressing global hunger.

  • The initiative underscores “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”, the world is one family, highlighting India’s global humanitarian outlook.

About Letter of Intent (LoI):
Dignitaries: The event was attended by Ashutosh Agnihotri, Chairman & Managing Director (CMD), Food Corporation of India (FCI); Samir Wanmali, Regional Director (RD), WFP Asia and Pacific Regional Office (APARO); Carl Skau, Deputy Executive Director (DED), WEP; Elisabeth Faure, Country Director, WFP India; Sanjeev Chopra, Secretary, DFPD, along with senior officials from the DFPD, GoI.
Supply Commitment: The agreement foresees supplying up to 200,000 metric tonnes(MT) of fortified rice over the next 5 years.
Background
WFP Discussions: The LoI is a continuation of the discussions held during the WFP Executive Board side event in Rome(Italy) in February 2025.

MoF introduces one-time, one-way switch facility from UPS to NPSIn August 2025, the Ministry of Finance (MoF) introduced a one-time, one-way switch facility allowing central government employees to move from the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) to the National Pension System (NPS).

  • The option will remain open until September 30, 2025.

Key Features of Switch Facility:
Switch Facility: This facility may be exercised by UPS optees any time a year prior to the date of superannuation or three months before to the deemed date of retirement in case of voluntary retirement.
Condition: Once employees opt for the switch, they will permanently forfeit UPS benefits, including assured payouts, and cannot revert to the UPS.
Exit Provisions: Upon switching, the exit provisions under the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) Exit & Withdrawal Regulations, 2015 (PFRDA Regulations, 2015) will become applicable.
Government Contribution: The Government of India’s(GoI) 4% differential contribution, calculated as per the default investment pattern, will be credited to the National Pension System (NPS) corpus at the time of exit.

India Releases First-ever National Guidelines for Animal Blood Transfusion, Blood BanksIn August 2025, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying (MoFAH&D) released India’s first comprehensive national “Guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Animal blood transfusion and blood banks”.
About National Guidelines for Veterinary Blood Transfusion:
Current Scenario: In India, most animal blood transfusions have so far been performed in emergency situations without SOPs for donor screening, blood typing, or storage.
Aim: The DAHD released comprehensive guidelines for veterinary blood transfusion services, aimed at bridging a critical gap in emergency animal healthcare.
Collaborative Development: The guidelines were formulated after extensive consultations with the Veterinary Council of India(VCI), veterinary universities, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) institutes, and State Governments (SG).
Key Provisions: The new guidelines require blood typing and cross-matching to prevent adverse reactions, set donor eligibility criteria including health and vaccination standards, and promote voluntary donations with informed consent through a Donor Rights Charter.

Union Minister JP Nadda Inaugurated Key Health Welfare Initiatives in MPIn August 2025, Union Minister Jagat Prakash (J.P.) Nadda, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) launched various key public health welfare initiatives at a program organised in Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Cultural & Information Centre (NSCBCI) in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh (MP).

Overview: These initiatives are centrally sponsored health programmes, designed to strengthen public health and community outreach in Madhya Pradesh.

Inauguration of Medical Colleges: Union Minister JP Nadda and MP CM Dr. Mohan Yadav virtually inaugurated the newly built Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) in Sheopur and Singrauli districts of MP.
Agreements: During the event, key agreements were signed with private investors to set up new GMCs in 4 districts of MP: Betul, Panna, Dhar, and Katni, under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) Model.
Vay Vandana Cards (VVCs): He also launched the distribution of Ayushman Bharat: Vay Vandana Card (AB-VVC) for 8 lakh senior citizens. He handed over PVC cards to 5 elderly beneficiaries during the event.

OpenAI Launches India’s First Learning Accelerator to Support Students and TeachersOn August 25, 2025, OpenAI, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) organization, launched India’s first Learning Accelerator, in collaboration with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)Madras(Tamil Nadu,TN), at an event held in New Delhi, Delhi, with an aim to empower educators and students with AI tools and training.

  • The OpenAI Learning Accelerator, India’s first initiative under the AI Impact Summit, is designed to advance research, improve access, and provide AI training in education throughout the country.

Licenses: As part of the initiative, OpenAI will distribute approximately 5 lakhs free ChatGPT licenses for teachers and students across government schools of classes (1-12), under the Ministry of Education (MoE), and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE)-regulated institutions in 6 months.

  • The licenses will provide teachers with premium ChatGPT access for lesson planning, assignments and student engagement, and students will be able to use advanced features.

Training: Open AI will collaborate with partners to design and roll out AI literacy and training programs for effective and responsible utilization of AI.

  • It will also deploy tools such as “Study Mode”, a personalized tutoring feature built on feedback from Indian learners, offering structured guidance, interactive questioning, and support aligned with curriculum.

Aim: The programme aims to advance Research, Innovation, Start-ups, and Entrepreneurship (RISE) in the maritime sector.
Alignment: The MAR-a-THON 2025 initiative is aligned with the vision of ‘Maritime AmritKaal 2047’.
Timeline: The application window for the startups will be open from August 25 to September 29, 2025. The hackathon will be conducted from 16 to 18 October 2025.
Fund: The selected startups will receive funding support based on milestones achieved to scale their innovations. GoI Sets up 3 Panels to Commemorate 150th Birth Anniversaries of Patel, Birsa Munda and birth Centenary of VajpayeeIn August 2025, the Government of India(GoI) has constituted 3 High-Level Committees (HLCs) to commemorate the 150th birth anniversaries of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, 1st Home Minister of Independent India and famously known as ‘Iron Man of India’ and Birsa Munda, famous tribal leader; and the 100th birth anniversary of Atal Bihar Vajpayee, former Prime Minister (PM) of India.

  • Each committee will be chaired by PM Narendra Modi, and will include Chief Ministers (CMs) of various States/Union Territories (UTs) as members.
  • The committees were formed through separate Gazette notifications issued by the Ministry of Culture.

Key Details of HLCs:
Committee for Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel: The committee will comprise 124 members, including several prominent leaders such as Pratibha Patil and Ram Nath Kovind, both former Presidents of India; and M. Venkaiah Naidu, former Vice President of India.
Committee for Birsa Munda: The committee will have 118 members, including Pratibha Devisingh Patil, former President of India; Ram Nath Kovind, former President of India and  Om Birla, Speaker of the Lok Sabha.

On August 25, 2025, Government of India (GoI) has appointed Goldman Sachs, global investment banking firm, as the sole transaction advisor for divestment of stakes in four Public Sector Banks (PSBs) such as Indian Overseas Bank (IOB), Central Bank of India (CBI), UCO Bank, and Punjab & Sind Bank.

Overview of Khelo India Water Sports Festival 2025The inaugural Khelo India Water Sports Festival (KIWSF) 2025 was organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MoYAS), Government of India (GoI), at the Dal Lake in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) under the Khelo India mission, from 21st to 23rd August 2025.

  • The 3-day event witnessed the participation of over 500 athletes from 28 States and Union Territories (UTs) competing in rowing, canoeing, and kayaking (medal events with 24 medals) and Shikara Race, Dragon Boat Race, and Water Skiing (demonstration events).

Mascot and Logo:
The official mascot of the inaugural edition was the Himalayan Kingfisher, symbolising agility and speed, while the event logo highlighted a Shikara (traditional Kashmiri boat) sailing on Dal Lake, showcasing the cultural heritage of Kashmir.
Major Winners & Results
Top Medal Tally: Madhya Pradesh (MP) claimed the team championship with 10 golds, 3 silvers, and 5 bronzes (total 18 medals), followed by Odisha and Kerala.

  • Madhya Pradesh dominated kayaking and canoeing, winning all four gold medals on Day 2 and maintaining momentum to win a total of 10 golds

Key Performance: Mohsin Ali, a 17-year-old Shikarawalla from Dal Lake, won the first gold medal of KIWSF 2025 in the 1000m Men’s Kayaking race, clocking 4:12.41 minutes.
Future Outlook: The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has announced that the inaugural KIWSF will be upgraded into a full-fledged Khelo India Water Games from 2026.

World Youth Archery Championships 2025: India Shines in Winnipeg, CanadaThe 19th edition of the World Youth Archery Championships (WYAC) 2025, a biennial global archery event, was held from 17th to 24th August 2025 in Winnipeg, Canada.

Organiser: The tournament was organised by World Archery (WA), headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland.
