Bharat Tex 2024: India to host the World’s Largest Textiles Event in Feb 2024 in New DelhiBharat Tex 2024 India to host the world's largest textiles eventi.India is all set to host its textile festival namely ‘Bharat Tex 2024’- the world’s biggest ever textiles event in the world in terms of exhibition area from February 26 to 29, 2024 at Bharat Mandapam & Yashobhoomi in New Delhi, Delhi.
ii.The announcement for the same was made during the curtain raiser event for the show at Vanijya Bhavan in Delhi on October 23, 2023 which was attended by the Union Minister Piyush Goyal, Ministry of Textiles.

Exercise Harimau Shakti 2023: India-Malaysia Joint Army Exercise begins in MeghalayaIndia-Malaysia joint army exercise Harimau Shakti 2023 begins in MeghalayaOn October 23, 2023, Exercise Harimau Shakti 2023, the two-week Indo-Malaysia  joint military exercise between the Indian Army (IA) and the Malaysian Army, commenced at the Umroi cantonment, located in Ri Bhoi district of the northeastern state of Meghalaya. The exercise is scheduled till November 5, 2023.
About Harimau Shakti:
i.Harimau Shakti, the Indo-Malaysia joint exercise, has been conducted annually since 2012 to foster the bilateral relations between the two nations.
ii.The last edition of the exercise, Harimau Shakti 2022, was conducted in Pulai, Kluang, Malaysia in November 2022.
Harimau Shakti 2023:
Aim:

  • To strengthen military ties between India and Malaysia
  • To enhance military capability for the conduct of Multi Domain Operations in a sub-conventional scenario

Participants:
It engaged approximately 120 personnel from both sides.
i.India is represented by a Battalion of the Rajput Regiment.
ii.The Malaysian contingent is made up of troops from the 5th Royal Battalion of the Malaysian Army.
Key Points:
i.The exercise focused on high degree of Physical fitness, Tactical drills, and Sharing best practices.
ii.It included Helicopters and drones, Evacuation and casualty management simulations, Logistics planning, Battalion-level survival drills
iii.Both sides will rehearse the employment of joint forces in jungle/semi-urban/urban environments, along with casualty management and evacuation drills.
iv.There will be logistics management and practice survival training at the Battalion level.
v.The Exercise will culminate with a 48-hour long validation exercise in a semi-urban area.

Theme: Inclusive Digital Services
This event was announced on February 14, 2023.
The hackathon received 154 proposals submitted by teams from both India and 28 participating teams/entities from countries such as Australia, Canada, Germany, Singapore, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. 
Winners  of HARBINGER 2023 in 4 key areas:
1.) Innovative, easy-to-use, digital banking services for differently abled (Divyaang).- Ezetap Mobile Solutions Pvt Ltd (Now acquired by Razorpay), India
2.) RegTech solutions to facilitate more efficient compliance for Regulated Entities (REs) – WeavAir, Singapore
3.) Exploring use cases/solutions for Central Bank Digital Currency -Retail (CBDC-R) transactions, including transactions in offline mode – Dygnify Ventures Private Limited, India

ADB Approves USD 175 Million Loan to Upgrade Roads in Madhya PradeshADB approves USD 175 million loan to upgrade roads in Madhya PradeshThe Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a USD 175 million loan forIndia : Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience of the Madhya Pradesh Road Network Project’.

  • The project aims to upgrade about 500 kilometers of state highways and major district roads to a standard two-lane feature in Madhya Pradesh(MP).

About the Project:
i.The project was initially proposed by ADB in September 2023.
ii.The project will build better, safer, and more climate-resistant roads in MP to connect rural areas to growth centres and industrial corridors.
iii.The project will also incorporate climate- and disaster-resilient design, innovative road safety elements, and facilities that will respond to the needs of the elderly, women, children, and people with disabilities.
iv.It prepares the road subsector development strategy with the focus on climate change resilience, low-carbon development, and road safety.
Partnership with MPRDC
i.ADB is partnering with Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation Limited (MPRDC), to build the capacity of MPRDC in climate change adaptation and mitigation, disaster resilience, and road safety.
ii.ADB along with MPRDC, to formulate a gender equality and social inclusion strategy.

  • An internship program will be made to attract female students to work in the road sector.

Background:
i.The ADB has been supporting the development of road networks in Madhya Pradesh since 2002.
ii.ADB has so far upgraded more than 9,000 kilometers of state highways and major district roads.

RBI Allows Retail Investors to Subscribe to FRSBs 2020 (T) via Retail Direct PortalRBI allows retail investors to subscribe to Floating Rate Savings BondsOn October 23, 2023, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in consultation with the Government of India (GoI), has expanded the range of products offered through RBI Retail Direct portal by allowing retail investors to subscribe to Floating Rate Savings Bonds , 2020 (Taxable)- FRSB 2020 (T).

  • Previously, the retail investors were allowed to invest in central government securities, treasury bills, state government securities and sovereign gold bonds through this portal.
  • The subscription of bonds will be in the form of cash (up to Rs 20,000 only)/drafts/cheques or any electronic mode.

Point to note:
Prior to this, the FRSB 2020 (T) was only available at designated branches of State Bank of India (SBI), Nationalised Banks, private banks specified by RBI and other entities authorised by RBI as per the guidelines of Floating rate bonds released by GoI in June 2020.

  • Now, FRSBs can be brought through retail Direct Portal.

About RBI-Retail Direct Scheme:
The Prime Minister (PM) of India Narendra Modi launched the scheme on November 12, 2021, allowing individual investors to open a Retail Direct Gilt (RDG) account with the Reserve Bank of India via an online portal (https://rbiretaildirect.org.in). This account facilitates investments in government securities in both primary and secondary markets.

Note: Individuals who are retail investors are permitted to open an RDG account.
What is FRSB 2020 (T)?
i.These are interest bearing, non-tradeable bonds, issued by the GoI, mature after seven years from the issue date.
ii.FRSB 2020 (T) features a floating interest rate paid semi-annually on January 1st and July 1st. Residents in India (including joint holdings) can invest, with a minimum of Rs 1000 and its multiples, and are bot open to NRIs (Non-Resident Indians).

  • These bonds are taxable under the Income Tax Act, 1961 and are issued at par.

iii.The interest rate on RBI savings bonds has been increased from 7.35% to 8.05% until June 30, 2023.

  • The interest rate on RBI FRSB has a spread of 0.35% over and above the interest rate on the National Savings Certificate (NSC).

iv.The interest rate on these bonds is reset every 6 months(on January 1 and July 1 every year).

SEBI Empanels 12 Entities to Provide Digital Forensic ServicesSebi empanels 12 entities to provide digital forensic services The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has empanelled 12 entities, including Ernst & Young LLP (EY), KPMG Assurance and Consulting Services LLP, to provide digital forensic services to its search team for onsite data acquisition during search and seizure operations.

  • This empanelment will be valid for 2 years.

Note: SEBI has been actively cracking down on entities involved in illicit activities, such as a front-running scam that made use of the messaging app Telegram in 2022.
Background:
In August 2023, the SEBI initiated the empanelment process by inviting applications from service providers with a strong background in digital forensic services for acquisition, extraction, and analysis of digital evidence sourced from diverse devices, including mobile phones, computers, tablets, and more.
Services to be provided by the Entities:
i.The empanelled entities will provide onsite and offsite assistance to the search team and onsite data acquisition during search and seizure operations.
ii.They will also conduct the forensic acquisition or imaging of different digital devices, including laptops, hard drives, Universal Serial Bus (USB) drives, Compact Discs (CD)/DVDs, and servers.
iii.They will also do onsite acquisition of cloud data from platforms like Gmail, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Telegram, WhatsApp, and any other relevant app or database.

Japan Becomes 1st Country Ever To Fire Electromagnetic RailgunJapan Becomes 1st Country Ever To Fire Electromagnetic RailgunThe Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), along with the Acquisition Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA), which comes under the Ministry of Defense of Japan, has successfully test-fired a medium-caliber maritime electromagnetic railgun from an offshore platform .

  • With this, Japan became the first country in the world to successfully test-fire a maritime railgun from an offshore platform.

What is a Railgun?
i.A railgun is a type of weapon that uses electromagnetic force to launch high-speed projectiles (at about Mach 7).
ii.The projectiles do not contain explosives, but instead rely on their mass, speed, and kinetic energy to inflict damage.
iii.Railguns could be used to target a wide range of aerial threats at sea, including hypersonic cruise missiles and hypersonic ballistic missiles.
iv.Railguns are stealthy to some extent (due to their small bullets).
About Japan Railgun:
i.It is a medium-sized electromagnetic railgun.
ii.It can shoot a 320g (or 0.7lb) 40mm steel rounds bullet at a speed of around 2,230 m/s (Mach 6.5).
iii.These railguns will be inducted into Japan’s defense system in the second half of 2020s(after 2025) after conducting several rounds of testing.
iv.These railguns can fire interceptors as well at the desired speeds.
Japan railgun development:
i.ALTA’s Ground Systems Research Centre (GSRC) started a 16mm railgun project in 1990.
ii.By 2016,  ATLA initiated a project to create a railgun prototype with anti-air and anti-missile capabilities.
iii.A small-caliber research railgun, together with relevant support and testing tools was developed by ALTA in 2018.
Note:The tested railgun by ATLA is a more extensive railgun with better capabilities than initially envisioned.

Japan is increasing its military capabilities, which include plans to accelerate the procurement of Tomahawk cruise missiles, develop its own long-range missiles, and acquire the ability to strike enemy military bases.

Badminton: India’s Unnati Hooda Win Women’s Singles Title in the Abu Dhabi Masters 2023 Abu Dhabi Masters 2023 badmintonIndia’s Unnati Hooda won the women’s singles title in the Abu Dhabi Masters 2023 badminton tournament held at the ADNEC Marina Hall, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE) from 17 – 22 October 2023.

  • Indian Duo of Ashwini Ponappa and Tanisha Crasto won the women’s Doubles title.
  • The tournament was organized by UAE Badminton Federation with sanctions from the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

Winners of Abu Dhabi Masters 2023:
i.Men’s Single:Mads Christophersen(Denmark) won the men’s singles title by defeating Mark Caljouw(the Netherlands) in the finals.

  • Indians Kiran George and Raghu Mariswamy lost in the semifinals.

ii.Men’s Doubles:Malaysian pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani won the men’s doubles title by defeating Thailand’s Pharanyu Kaosamaang and Worrapol Thongsanga in the finals.
iii.Women’s Singles:The 16-year-old Unnati Hooda won the women’s singles title by defeating 20-year-old Samiya Imad Farooqui(India) in the finals.

  • This marks Unnati Hooda’s second Super 100 title including her win in the Odisha Open 2022. she made the record of the the youngest Indian to win a BWF tournament at the age of 14.

iv.Women’s Doubles:Indian Pair Ashwini Ponappa and Tanisha Crasto won the Women’s singles title by defeating Denmark’s Julie Finne-Ipsen and Mai Surrow in the final.

  • This also marks Ashwini Ponappa and Tanisha Crasto’s first BWF World Tour title.
  • Ashwini Ponappa and Tanisha Crasto defeated another Indian pair  N Sikki Reddy and Arathi Sara Sunil in the semifinals.

v.Mixed Doubles:Mads Vestergaard and Christine Busch of Denmark won the mixed doubles title by defeating Terry Hee Yong Kai and Jessica Tan Wei Han of Singapore.

  • GM Nodirbek Abdussatorov (Uzbekistan) secured second place while S L Narayanan(India) secured third place in the Qatar Masters Open 2023.
  • International Master (IM) Vaishali Rameshbabu (India) secured the women’s champion title while IM Divya Deshmukh(India) and Woman International Master (WIM) Alua Nurmanova (Kazakhstan) secured second and third highest ranks among women players.
  • The 22-year-old Vaishali Rameshbabu secured the third and final Grandmaster (GM) norm.
  • GM Karthikeyan Murali becomes the third Indian to defeat GM Magnus Carlsen in Classical Chess after Harikrishna and Viswanathan Anand.

Eminent Assamese Scholar & Padma Shri Awardee Birendra Nath Datta Passed AwayPadma Shri Birendra Nath Datta Passes Away At 88 Padma Shri Awardee Birendra Nath Datta, an eminent Assamese scholar, Linguist, and Singer, passed away at the age of 88 in Guwahati, Assam. He was born on March 1, 1935 in Nagaon, Assam.
About Birendra Nath Datta:
i.He started his academic career as a lecturer at the B Borooah College in 1957 in Assam and later served in various colleges of Assam.
ii.He retired as the esteemed Head of the Department (HOD) of Folklore Research at Gauhati University(Guwahati, Assam) in 1995.
iii.After his retirement, he joined Tezpur University (Assam) as a professor in the Department of Traditional Culture and Art Forms.
iv.He has also served as the founder Principal of the Pramathesh Barua College, Gauripur (Assam), popularly known as P. B. College.
v.He also served as the President of Assam’s premier literary organisation, Asam Sahitya Sabha, for 2 terms in 2003 and 2004, and a life member of the Gauhati Artists’ Guild.
Notable Works:
A Study of the Folk Culture of the Goalpara Region of Assam (1995); Goalpariya Lokagit Sangraha (Assamese) (2010) (This book is a collection of folksongs of the Goalpara region of Assam); Cultural Contours of Northeast India (2012).
Awards:
i.He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2009 for Literature and Education;
ii.For the book Shankar-Madhav Manisha Aaru Sanskritik Uttaradhikar, he won the 12th Jagaddhatri-Harmohan Das Literary Award in 2010.
iii.He also received the Tagore Ratna Award of Sangeet Natak Akademi in 2012.

Legendary Indian spinner & Padma Sri Awardee Bishan Singh Bedi Passed AwayBishan Singh Bedi, legendary India spinner, dies at 77 Former Indian cricketer, legendary left-arm spinner and Padma Shri awardee, Bishan Singh Bedi, passed away at the age of 77. He was born on 25th September 1946 in Amritsar, Punjab.
About Bishan Singh Bedi:
Career:
i.Bishan Bedi made his debut for India against West Indies at Eden Gardens (Kolkata, West Bengal)on December 31, 1966.
ii.He played 67 Tests for India between 1967 and 1979 and captained Team India for 4 years in the Test format between 1975 and 1979.
iii.He led Delhi to its first two Ranji Trophy titles (in 1978-79 and 1979-80). He also led Punjab to its only Ranji Trophy win (in the 1992-93).
iv.He played for Northamptonshire in 102 outings (1972 and 1977), and took 434 wickets, which is the most by an Indian in County cricket.

  • Bedi was one of the most successful overseas players in English county cricket.

v.He made his final international appearance for India against England at the Kennington Oval in 1979.
He became the first professional head coach of India in 1990.
Record:
i.He took 1560 wickets  (more than any other Indian bowler) in 370 matches with a bowling average of 28.71.
ii.He has taken 266 wickets in 67 matches. With this, he made a record of being the highest wicket-taker in India.

  • In June 2023, Ravindra Jadeja surpassed Bishan Singh Bedi to become India’s most successful left-arm spinner in Test cricket by taking 267 wickets in 65 matches at an average of 24.25.

Awards:
i.Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri for sports in 1970.
ii.He also received the Arjuna Award for Cricket in 1969.
iii.Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) honoured him with the Colonel C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004.

Baiga Tribe Becomes the 2nd Tribe to Get Habitat Rights in ChhattisgarhBaiga tribal group gets habitat rights in ChhattisgarhBaiga, classified as the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG), in Chhattisgarh has received the Habitat rights under the Forest Rights Act(FRA) 2006. With this Baiga has become the 2nd tribal group after Kamar to get habitat rights in Chhattisgarh.
Note: On August 9, 2023, during the occasion of World Tribal Day, the Chhattisgarh government granted habitat rights to the Kamar PVTG in 22 villages of the Magarlod block of the Dhamtari district.
Key Points:
i.The habitat rights has recognised 19 villages/para/tola of Baiga community in Gaurela block in Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi (GPM).
ii.The villages cover 2,085 families with a population of 6,483 individuals (3272 males and 3210 females).

  • These villages received the rights in a special event organised by the district administration of GPM.

iii.The Baiga community, primarily inhabits various districts in Chhattisgarh, such as Rajnandgaon, Kawardha, Mungeli, GPM, Manendra-Bharatpur-Chirmiri, and Bilaspur.

  • They also have a presence in the surrounding regions of Madhya Pradesh.

Habitat rights:
Habitat rights are given to PVTGs under section 3(1) (e) [rights including community tenures of habitat and habitation for primitive tribal groups and pre-agricultural communities] of The Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006 also known as the FRA.
Benefits:
i.Habitat rights recognition is a powerful tool for promoting social justice, preserving cultural heritage, and fostering sustainable environmental practices.
ii.Recognition of habitat rights empowers communities to uphold their age-old traditions and lifestyle without external interference.
iii.By enabling the convergence of various government initiatives, habitat rights empower PVTGs to actively participate in the development and management of their habitats.
Point to note:
According to Section 2(h) of FRA, “Habitat” includes the area comprising the customary habitat and other habitats in reserved forests and protected forests of primitive tribal groups and pre-agricultural communities, as well as other forest-dwelling Scheduled Tribes.
PVTGs in India:
i.The Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA) designates specific tribal communities as PVTGs based on certain criteria.
ii.These groups typically exhibit technological backwardness, limited population growth, low literacy rates, and subsistence-level economies.
iii.They often inhabit remote, isolated areas in small, scattered hamlets. As of now, 75 PVTGs have been identified across 18 states and one Union Territory based on the recommendations of the Dhebar Commission (1960-61).

  • Out of 75 PVTGs in India, only 3 have habitat rights.

Rajasthan Launches ‘iStart Talent Connect Portal’ To Boost Employment Opportunities 
The government of Rajasthan launched the iStart Talent Connect Portal under iStart Rajasthan, the flagship initiative of the Rajasthan Government in collaboration with Jaipur-based startup Hyrefox.
The portal was launched during the Bhamashah Techno Hub, Jaipur, Rajasthan.

  • The portal was developed to support the job providers and job seekers with a user-friendly platform.
  • The portal will allow the companies to hire potential talents and let them post job opening details and connect with job seekers.

Since its launch in 2017, iStart Rajasthan has played a major role in supporting local talents and new-age sectors and ventures.

UP Govt Set Up URIDA to Implement CM Grids Scheme
The Urban Development Department of the Government of Uttar Pradesh has established an Urban Road Infrastructure Development Agency (URIDA) which will be responsible for implementing the Chief Minister Green Road Infrastructure Development Scheme (Urban) (CM Grids Scheme) on the ground.

  • In October 2023, the UP cabinet approved the CM Grids Scheme worth Rs.500 crore to construct roads of international standards in all cities.

i.The URIDA office will be established on the premises of the Directorate of Local Bodies, Lucknow, UP.
ii.A general body and an executive committee have also been established under URIDA to monitor the activities of CM Grids (Urban).

  • The general body will be Chaired by the Chief Secretary (CS) and the Additional CS or Principal Secretary of the Urban Development Department will be the Vice Chair.
